Music, Society, and My Chemical Romance Student Presenter Not a Band, An Idea: Music, Society, and My Chemical Romance Student Presenter: Chris Cassidy Project Advisor: David Sanford My Chemical Romance (MCR) began as a reaction to the tragedies of the September 11 2001 attacks on New York City.1 They evolved into a band which received international acclaim for their music and became known for popularizing the “emo” genre globally. As the posterboys of the emo movement, they became associated with all aspects of emo, their music transcending audio and becoming a cultural milestone. This effect was only exemplified when they broke up in 2013, clarifying that “[My Chemical Romance] is not a band- it is an idea.” 2 However, despite this break up, their popularity remains as strong as ever as a new generation discovers their music. This has been shown by their unexpected reunion in October of 2019, where their reunion show sold out in a matter of minutes3 and was live streamed to hundreds of thousands of fans globally. 4 For my thesis, I tried to answer the question: Why is MCR still relevant despite being inactive for years? I answer this question in two parts: “Band,” or what made their music longlasting; and “idea,” or their long term societal impact. I conclude that MCR remains relevant due to a message of hope in a time of existential fear. 1 My Chemical Romance: Life on the Murder Scene, directed by Greg Kaplan (2006, Reprise/ Warner Brothers (2006): iTunes (2014). 2 Gerard Way, A Vigil, On Birds and Glass, TwitLonger, March 25, 2013. http://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1rjdh4f 3 Suzy Exposito, “My Chemical Romance Marches On Again at Los Angeles Reunion Show,” December 21, 2019. Date Accessed: April 6, 2020. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-live-reviews/my-chemical-romance-reunion-show-los-angeles-928097/ 4 Ibid .

Signed Name of student: Claudia Gielis Gielis /3 Abstract Masculinity and femininity can be performed in many ways. The emo genre explores a variety of ways in which gender can be performed. Theories on gender, masculinity and femininity will be used to analyze both the lyrics and the music videos of these two bands, indicating how they perform gender lyrically and visually. Likewise a short introduction on emo music will be given, to gain a better understanding of the genre and the subculture. It will become clear that the emo subculture allows for men and women to explore their own identity. This is reflected in the music associated to the emo genre as well as their visual representation in their music videos. This essay will explore how both a male fronted band, My Chemical Romance, and a female fronted band, Paramore, perform gender. All studio albums and official music videos will be used to investigate how they have performed gender throughout their career.

  • Masculinity in Emo Music a Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Arts and Social Science in Candi
CARLETON UNIVERSITY FLUID BODIES: MASCULINITY IN EMO MUSIC A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCE IN CANDIDACY FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC BY RYAN MACK OTTAWA, ONTARIO MAY 2014 ABSTRACT Emo is a genre of music that typically involves male performers, which evolved out of the punk and hardcore movements in Washington DC during the mid-80s. Scholarly literature on emo has explored its cultural and social contexts in relation to the “crisis” of masculinity—the challenging of the legitimacy of patriarchy through “alternative” forms of masculinity. This thesis builds upon this pioneering work but departs from its perpetuation of strict masculine binaries by conflating hegemonic and subordinate/alternative masculinities into a single subject position, which I call synergistic masculinity. In doing so, I use emo to explicate this vis-à-vis an intertextual analysis that explores the dominant themes in 1) lyrics; 2) the sites of vocal production (head, throat, chest) in conjunction with pitch and timbre; 3) the extensional and intensional intervallic relationships between notes and chords, and the use of dynamics in the musical syntax; 4) the use of public and private spaces, as well as the performative masculine body in music video. I posit that masculine emo performers dissolve these hierarchically organized masculinities, which allows for a deeper musical meaning and the extramusical signification of masculinity. Keywords: emo, synergistic masculinity, performativity, music video, masculinities, lyrics, vocal production, musical syntax, dynamics. ABSTRAIT Emo est un genre musical qui implique typiquement des musiciens de sexe masculine et qui est issu de movement punk et hardcore originaire de Washington DC durant les années 80.

This band’s extensive and impressive merchandise catalogue can be attributed to guitarist Nick Steinhardt’s side occupation as a graphic designer. A live EP following this band’s sophomore studio album was titled Live on BBC Radio 1 and featured vocals from Jordan Dreyer of La Dispute. It’s not Red Hot Chili Peppers, but this band’s distinct asterisk-shaped logo was meant to evoke converging road markings leading to a sunset, and was first used in promotional artwork for the band’s second album, with that album’s initials “PTSBBAM” arranged in the negative spaces of the logo. This band’s 2016 single “Palm Dreams” was described by their frontman as a song about his inability to ask his mother about why she moved to California after she passed. The album from which that single is taken, as a whole, deals with themes of frontman Jeremy Bolm grieving the loss of his mother due to cancer. For 10 points, give the name of this Los Angeles-based post-hardcore band, which you may know from the albums Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me and Stage Four. ANSWER: Touché Amoré 2.
