Evolutionary morphology of the rabbit skull Brian Kraatz1 and Emma Sherratt2 1 Department of Anatomy, Western University of Health Sciences, United States 2 Department of Evolution, Ecology and Genetics, Research School of Biology, The Australian National University, Canberra, ACT, Australia ABSTRACT The skull of leporids (rabbits and hares) is highly transformed, typified by pronounced arching of the dorsal skull and ventral flexion of the facial region (i.e., facial tilt). Previous studies show that locomotor behavior influences aspects of cranial shape in leporids, and here we use an extensive 3D geometric morphometrics dataset to further explore what influences leporid cranial diversity. Facial tilt angle, a trait that strongly correlates with locomotor mode, significantly predicts the cranial shape variation captured by the primary axis of cranial shape space, and describes a small proportion (13.2%) of overall cranial shape variation in the clade. However, locomotor mode does not correlate with overall cranial shape variation in the clade, because there are two district morphologies of generalist species, and saltators and cursorial species have similar morphologies. Cranial shape changes due to phyletic size change (evolutionary allometry) also describes a small proportion (12.5%) of cranial shape variation in the clade, but this is largely driven by the smallest living leporid, the pygmy rabbit (Brachylagus idahoensis). By integrating phylogenetic history with our geometric morphometric data, we show that the leporid cranium exhibits weak phylogenetic signal and substantial homoplasy. Though these results make it difficult to reconstruct what the `ancestral' leporid skull looked like, the fossil records suggest that dorsal arching and facial tilt could have occurred before the origin of the crown group. -

It is not just because of my involvement in the conservation issues of the state of Jammu & Kashmir, but I am impressed with the Ladakhi version of the Field Guide. As the Field Guide has been specially produced for the local youth, I hope that the Guide will help in conserving the unique mammal species of Ladakh. Key Points Location: Haridwar (Uttarakhand), along the foothills of the Shivalik range, spans 820 square kilometres. Background: Three sanctuaries in the Uttarakhand i.e. Rajaji, Motichur and Chila were amalgamated into a large protected area and named Rajaji National Park in the year 1983 after the famous freedom fighter C. Rajgopalachari; popularly known as “Rajaji”. Features: This area is the North Western Limit of habitat of Asian elephants. Forest types include sal forests, riverine forests, broad–leaved mixed forests, scrubland and grassy. It possesses as many as 23 species of mammals and 315 bird species such as elephants, tigers, leopards, deers and ghorals, etc. It was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2015. It is home to the Van Gujjars in the winters. Van Gujjars: It is one of the few forest-dwelling nomadic communities in the country. Usually, they migrate to the bugyals (grasslands) located in the upper Himalayas with their buffaloes and return only at the end of monsoons to their makeshift huts, deras, in the foothills. They inhabit the foothills of Himalayan states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttrakhand. They traditionally practice buffalo husbandry; a family owns up to 25 heads of buffaloes. They rely on buffaloes for milk, which gets them a good price in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh markets. 1/2 Other Protected Areas in Uttarakhand: Jim Corbett National Park (first National Park of India). Factors influencing snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) in Michigan By David Michael Burt A THESIS Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Fisheries and Wildlife – Master of Science 2014 ABSTRACT Factors influencing snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) in Michigan By David Michael Burt The goal of my thesis was to identify the climatic and vegetation factors that influence snowshoe hare occupancy in Michigan. My objectives were to: 1) quantify snowshoe hare occupancy as related to climate change and 2) quantify the relationships between patch-level snowshoe hare occupancy and land cover change over time, current land cover, habitat structure, and mesocarnivore presence. In Chapter 1, I determined the most efficient transect configurations for winter track surveys and found that transects 150m in length with 100 or 75m spacing, or 125m in length with 75m spacing provided reliable estimates of hare occupancy. In Chapter 2, I researched climatic variables that are potentially linked to snowshoe hare population performance and assessed whether those factors affected the localized extinction of snowshoe hares. I found that localized extinction was influenced by maximum temperature from May 15 – January 19; as temperature increased the likelihood of localized extinction increased. I also found that the total number of days with measurable snow on the ground affected localized extinction; as number of days with snow on the ground decreased the likelihood of localized extinction increased. In Chapter 3, I evaluated whether land cover change over time, current land cover, and habitat factors affected snowshoe hare occupancy and habitat use. I found that land cover change over time did not affect hare occupancy. -

ALVES1* AND KLAUS HACKLÄNDER2 Lagomorph taxonomy is traditionally controversy, and as a consequence the number of species varies according to different publications. Although this can be due to the conservative characteristic of some morphological and genetic traits, like general shape and number of chromosomes, the scarce knowledge on several species is probably the main reason for this controversy. Also, some species have been discovered only recently, and from others we miss any information since they have been first described (mainly in pikas). We struggled with this difficulty during the work on this book, and decide to include a list of lagomorph species (Table 1). As a reference, we used the recent list published by Hoffmann and Smith (2005) in the “Mammals of the world” (Wilson and Reeder, 2005). However, to make an updated list, we include some significant published data (Friedmann and Daly 2004) and the contribu- tions and comments of some lagomorph specialist, namely Andrew Smith, John Litvaitis, Terrence Robinson, Andrew Smith, Franz Suchentrunk, and from the Mexican lagomorph association, AMCELA. We also include sum- mary information about the geographical range of all species and the current IUCN conservation status. Inevitably, this list still contains some incorrect information. We were welcomed to a sunny Ladakh - a place with the most outstanding landscape, high altitude birds and wildlife; and to add to this, the lovely Ladakhi people. We met Sujan and Khendrap at the airport before driving through the busy Leh town to our pretty little hotel, the Mantra Cottage. Our rooms were ready, and after a welcome breakfast we had some rest. Some went on a bike to see the city and spotted a few of the common birds of Leh including House Sparrow, Green-backed Tit, Black Redstart, Black-billed Magpie, Mountain Chiffchaff and Oriental Turtle Dove. After briefing and dinner we retired to bed again: a rule of the land - or the altitude will get you! Day 3 Sunday 5th July Jigmet, a local wildlife guide, joined us today. We started the day by visiting Stok marsh where we saw Ibisbill feeding along the shingle beds in the middle of the river. We also had some great views of Common Rosefinch, Mountain Chiffchaff, Bluethroat and Hume’s Whitethroat. -

India is very rich country in terms of tourism. If we talk about tourism we talk about places, culture, and socio economic development, employment of regional people, infrastructure, climate change and overall boost in the economy. When a person starts from his place to a tourist destination, he becomes the source of income for numerous people , sectors come across like local transport, Airways, railways, roadways, hotels, Restaurants, and source of employment for the regional and local people. So we can say that if Government focuses on tourism industry they focus on the economy of a particular region, livelihood of the local people, infrastructural development like roads, Hotels etc. But we must also think about the other related aspects of the tourism like pollution, crime, deforestation, eco- system, Bio- diversity etc. Introduction: The land of legends, Dev Bhoomi, abode of gods Uttrakhand, well known for its natural beauty and the peaceful religious places, these places attract people from all over the world, natural beauty can be seen in uttrakhand like different villages, Himalayas which are always covered with snow, glaciers, lakes and many beautiful forest areas, Bugyal etc( Sukla and sukla 2009 p 78). Uttrakhand is rich in scenic beauty with helthy climate and ample avenues for adventure sports and eco-tourism. -

SNOW LEOPARD SPECIAL: LADAKH 1 – 14/17 MARCH 2017 LEADERS: MIKE WATSON & JIGMET DADUL. 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Snow Leopard Special: Ladakh 2017 www.birdquest-tours.com Snow Leopard guarding its Blue Sheep kill in Hemis NP (Mike Watson). Our ffth visit to the mountains of Ladakh in search of Snow Leopards was another success and resulted in two sightings, involving maybe two different cats, however, the second of these was certainly our most prolonged close range encounter so far involving a leopard at its Blue Sheep kill over the course of three days! Many thousands of images later we felt we could hardly better it so we did not spend quite as much time scanning as usual and looked for other animals instead. This resulted in a longer bird and mammal list than last time when we spend many more hours at vantage points. Other mammalian highlights included: two sightings of Grey (or Tibetan) Wolf; Siberian Ibex; Urial, Ladakh’s endemic ‘red sheep’; any amount of Blue Sheep (or Bharal), the Snow Leopard’s favourite prey, as well as other hardy alpine inhabitants such as Woolly Hare, Mountain Weasel and (Tibetan) Red Fox. The Tibetan Plateau Extension added Argali (the world’s largest sheep) and Kiang (Tibetan Wild Ass). Billed as a joint Birdquest/Wild Images tour, our birders were happy with a good selection of old favourite Himalayan specialities including: Himalayan Snowcock, Lammergeier, Himalayan Griffon Vulture, Golden Ea- gle, Ibisbill, Solitary Snipe (three plus another while acclimatizing pre-tour), Hill and Snow Pigeons, Eurasian Eagle Owl, Red-billed and Alpine Choughs, White-browed Tit-Warbler (six), Wallcreeper, Güldenstädt’s Red- start, Brown Dipper, Robin and Brown Accentors, Brandt’s Mountain Finch, Streaked and Great Rosefnches, Twite and Red-fronted Serin on the main tour. -

RURAL DEVELOPMENT AND MIGRATION COMMISSION UTTARAKHAND, PAURI NATURE BASED TOURISM (ECO-TOURISM) IN UTTARAKHAND Analysis and recommendations SEPTEMBER 2018 PREFACE Uttarakhand, located in the western Himalayan region, is largely mountainous with bulk of its population living in the rural areas. Migration of people from rural to semi-urban or urban areas particularly from the hill districts is a major cause for concern, as it results in depopulated or partially depopulated villages; and a dwindling primary sector (agriculture). Out migration from the rural areas of the state is posing multiple challenges causing economic disparities; declining agriculture; low rural incomes and a stressed rural economy. It is in this background that the Uttarakhand government decided to set up a commission to assess the quantum and extent of out migration from different rural areas of the state; evolve a vision for the focused development of the rural areas, that would help in mitigating out-migration and promote welfare and prosperity of the rural population; advise the government on multi-sectoral development at the grassroots level which would aggregate at the district and state levels; submit recommendations on those sections of the population of the state that is at risk of not adequately benefitting from economic progress and to recommend and monitor focused initiatives in sectors that would help in multi-sectoral development of rural areas and thus help in mitigating the problem of out-migration. The commission chaired by the Chief Minister of the state , presented its first report to the government in the first half of 2018 in which various aspects of out migration have been brought out on the basis of a detailed ground level survey and detailed consultations with various stakeholders.
