  • BILL COSBY Biography
BILL COSBY Biography Bill Cosby is, by any standards, one of the most influential stars in America today. Whether it be through concert appearances or recordings, television or films, commercials or education, Bill Cosby has the ability to touch people’s lives. His humor often centers on the basic cornerstones of our existence, seeking to provide an insight into our roles as parents, children, family members, and men and women. Without resorting to gimmickry or lowbrow humor, Bill Cosby’s comedy has a point of reference and respect for the trappings and traditions of the great American humorists such as Mark Twain, Buster Keaton and Jonathan Winters. The 1984-92 run of The Cosby Show and his books Fatherhood and Time Flies established new benchmarks on how success is measured. His status at the top of the TVQ survey year after year continues to confirm his appeal as one of the most popular personalities in America. For his philanthropic efforts and positive influence as a performer and author, Cosby was honored with a 1998 Kennedy Center Honors Award. In 2002, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honor, was the 2009 recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and the Marian Anderson Award. SEX ON TV 2005 A KAISER FAMILY FOUNDatION REPORT DALE KUNKEL, PH.D., KEREN EYAL, PH.D., KELI FINNERTY, ERICA BIELY, & EdWARD DONNERSTEIN, PH.D. UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA NOVEMBER 2005 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The authors wish to convey their appreciation and gratitude to a number of individuals who have made significant contributions to this study. At the University of Arizona, Brian Atkinson served as our technology director, and expertly supervised the project’s transition to the digital environment, which required all new equipment for recording, storage, and playback of over 1000 programs. Nic Schoenfeld managed the collection of the program sample adeptly, and Zhongxiang (Edward) Xia devised a sophisticated software interface to track the status of each show from its initial recording to the completion of its coding and analysis. Carey Willets accomplished all administrative and financial aspects of the project helpfully and efficiently. And finally, Priya Raman provided valuable assistance writing many of the scene examples included in the report as illustrations of key content categories. We thank all of them for their efforts and generous contributions. At the Kaiser Family Foundation, Vicky Rideout has been the leader of this project since its inception. This project now ranks as one of the longest-running studies in the realm of media and social effects research, its value growing with each replication that affords stable and precise comparisons of industry trends over time. We greatly appreciate Vicky’s leadership, and the foundation’s continued participation in this research effort.W e also thank Theresa Boston for her excellent supervision of the final report document throughout the publication process.

  • Response to This Article About the Hasbro/Discovery Hub Shift In
Response to this article about the Hasbro/Discovery Hub shift in power...which turned into another my long-winded, thoughtful rants: http://online.wsj.com/articles/discovery-to-take-control-of-the-hub-network- 1410979842 Well, that's...somewhat shocking. From what I can tell, the Hasbro/Discovery partnership in The Hub has been an amazing success. I watch the channel almost every day. Most of its programming is--and has been, for the past 3.5 years--excellent. From the original series (FiM, Pound Puppies, Strawberry Shortcake, LPS, Dan Vs., Aquabats Super Show, Family Game Night, Care Bears, Transformers, Haunting Hour), to all the other wonderful shows/sitcoms (oh my goodness!! Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, Goosebumps, Laverne & Shirley, Happy Days, Mork & Mindy, Step By Step, Who's the Boss, Family Ties, The Facts of Life, Sister, Sister, Sabrina, Atomic Betty, etc.), to the extremely well-chosen family movies (I loved it when they aired the Homeward Bound films, All Dogs Go to Heaven 2...today I saw Spaceballs...and they've just made so many other great movie picks every season.) They've been an outstanding example of listening to your viewers and giving them what they want. Even their misfires and middle-of-the-road shows are more than bearable (SheZow, animated Sabrina, Teenage Fairytale Dropouts, Kid President, Parents Just Don't Understand, and such.) If Hasbro were to grow dissatisfied with controlling six hours of its toy-based cartoons daily on Hub (which seems like a fair deal they've cut, tbh), and moved them over to Cartoon Network or Disney...well, at least the shows would still continue on, and be a MASSIVE boon to either of those channels.
