In addition, the Heat added several new players to the roster in the off-season. It takes time for new players to become ac- climated to a new system and to become familiar with their new teammates. The biggest reason for Miami’s struggles has been the absence of three time all-star Dwayne Wade. Wade has missed the first six games of the season while recov- ering from off-season knee and shoulder surgeries. It’s difficult to overstate how dependent the Heat is upon Wade for offense. Wade is by far the team’s best scorer, having aver- aged 27.4 points per game in the 06-07 season. Using his tremen- dous quickness, Wade regularly draws extra defenders toward him when attacking the basket. This creates open shot opportunities for his teammates. The absence of Wade has been a major factor in O’Neal’s dimin- ished effectiveness. Defenses have been able to focus on stop- ping O’Neal, since Wade hasn’t been on the court. All of these factors put to- gether have resulted in the Heat being ranked last in points per game through the first 6 games of the year. Without Wade to carry the offense, the Heat has had to resort to slowing the game down and playing tough defense to stay

Walking through the halls of BCC, I am overcome with a feel- ing of alienation – and quite frank- ly, annoyance. Conversations floating around, whether person to person or over the phone, seem to be in every language except one: English. When I hide away in the library in an attempt of seeking silent solitude it follows me. Two students sit next to me rambling in Spanish. It is literally inescapable. It’s not just at school – its ev- erywhere! Once when I was at Publix, I couldn’t find any food coloring and asked an employee for assistance. The response: “Que?” The last time I checked, this was America… right? I’m sure that if someone didn’t know me, the automatic response would be, ‘She’s racist!’ But I can assure you that is entirely un- true. The majority of my friends are of Hispanic decent. They just have enough common courtesy to speak in the “dominant” language of this country. It may sound obnoxiously rude, but I don’t find it too much to ask for people living in America to speak English. I’m completely understanding of the fact that families from other countries want to hold on to their culture. I also understand that South Florida (like the majority of the country) is very diverse. But we are still apart of the 50 nifty English- speaking United States. I cannot comprehend why I should have to learn a foreign language to locate an item at my local supermarket, or to ask for directions, or (because I moved here from another state) to make new friends. If I moved to Spain, Japan, France, or any other coun- try, should I expect the people there to speak English for me? I didn’t think so. november 19, 2007 Opinion The Observer 23 Dear Editor, Kid abuse? Not in their Nation Don’t tell me how to study John Wilson psychologists interviewed some well being.
