  • On the Field at Kauffman Stadium Before the May 13Th Game Between
On the field at Kauffman Stadium before the May 13th game between the Kansas City Royals and Colorado Rockies I was looking for Rene Lachemann to tell him that one of his former teammates wanted to see him. But Rene was not around, so I began asking different Rockies players and staff if they had seen Mr. Lachemann. All of them responded with the same reply, “You will hear him before you see him.” Soon it was discovered what they meant as the bench coach of the Rockies made his way up from under the stadium where he had been working with one of the catchers, and his booming voice could be heard. This voice has been heard by many major league and minor league players for many years as Rene Lachemann has managed and coached and trained these players in the finer points of the game. Rene was born in Los Angeles California and is the youngest of three brothers to have long careers in professional baseball. Rene served as a batboy for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1959 to 1962, went to the University of California and was signed by the Kansas City Athletics in 1964 as a catcher. He played for the KC A’s in 1965 and 1966 and moved with the team to Oakland appearing in games in 1968. He began managing in the Oakland minor leagues in 1973 spending 5 seasons in the A’s system before going to the Seattle Mariners organization. He took his first major league managers job in 1981 with the Mariners succeeding Maury Wills, and led the M’s from 1981-1983.

  • SEATTLE MARINERS NAME SCOTT SERVAIS MANAGER Scott Servais
For Immediate Release Friday, October 23, 2015 SEATTLE MARINERS NAME SCOTT SERVAIS MANAGER Former Major League Player and Front Office Executive Named 17th Full-Time Manager in Club History. SEATTLE, Wash. – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that Scott Servais (pronounced ‘service’) has been named as the Seattle Mariners new manager. “Through the course of the 20-plus years I’ve known Scott, I’ve come to see him as one of the most complete, well balanced and inclusive baseball people in the industry,” Dipoto said. “I’ve been fortunate enough to call him a teammate as a player, while also having worked closely with him as an organizational leader in both Colorado and Los Angeles. He is a communicator with strong baseball acumen and leadership skills. I truly believe his strong character and career experiences as a player, coach and executive have prepared him for this opportunity.” Servais, 48, spent the past four seasons as the Los Angeles Angels Assistant General Manager, Scouting and Player Development. In that role, he worked closely with Dipoto on all aspects of baseball operations, with a focus on player development. “I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to manage the Seattle Mariners,” Servais said. “It has long been my goal to manage a big league team and while I took a slightly different path than many, I am confident in my ability to lead. We have a terrific core of players and I’m looking forward to bringing in a coaching staff that will help me establish a winning culture here as we work toward putting a championship-caliber team on the field for the fans of the Northwest.” Servais is the 17th full-time skipper in Mariners history.

Through my research I have found that both entities follow a very similar timeline with highs and lows coming around the same time in the same province; although, I have not found any direct linkage between the two. My analysis begins around 1837 and continues through present day, and by analyzing the histories of each movement demonstrates clearly that both movements followed a unique and similar timeline.

I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.

FOUR DECADES OF SEATTLE MARINERS BASEBALL Each month during the 2017 season, Mariners Magazine will highlight a different era to celebrate the club’s 40th Anniversary. In this issue, we’ll take a look at the 1977 through 1983 seasons. (Part 1 of 6) By Mike Gastineau The first game in Seattle Mariners history was played on April 6, 1977, in front of a sellout crowd of 57,762. In an historic twist Diego Segui was the Opening Day starting pitcher for the Mariners. Eight years earlier, on October 1, 1969, Segui pitched the 9th inning of what would be the final game in the Seattle Pilots history. He gave up a run that tied the game but got the win when the Pilots scored in their half of the inning. His luck was not as good in 1977 as the Angels chased him in the 4th inning of a 7-0 loss. The opening night defeat aside, when the Seattle Mariners arrived on the baseball scene in April of 1977 AL West titles in 1976.
