At Ringshall School we provide a challenging, nurturing environment in which children grow and flourish. Good teaching and high expectations encourage all learners to love learning and do their best. Through a wide variety of activities we develop the individual qualities of the children. There is a strong emphasis upon outdoor learning and learning through the environment. Everything is underpinned by our Rainbow Skills which we actively teach the children. We have identified these as essential skills for successful learning and, in future life, the skills that will enable the children to be fully participating members of society. The Ben Parkinson Shield was originally introduced to the event in recognition of his achievements and participation in the Commando Speed March after being severely injured on Op HERRICK. Ben Parkinson was in the 7th Parachute Regiment Royal Horse Artillery and was injured in Afghanistan in 2006 after his Land Rover hit a mine. This resulted in serious life changing injuries. However, Ben Parkinson has been a major inspiration with the courage and determination and he has consistently shown during his road to recovery. This has included carrying the Olympic torch in 2012 through Doncaster on prosthetic legs and being awarded the MBE for his charity work by the Prince of Wales at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace in 2013. The Shield is awarded to the competitor that has demonstrated the most determination, resilience, and outright tenacity, and Airtpr Smith was not only 4 Regt AAC’s youngest team member, but also got around that course in just over an hour which is a formidable effort – well done whiskers!

As I look back there are certain highlights that stand out – the sorts of things that you'd genuinely not experience outside of the Army. For example, I've enjoyed going to Leeds Castle with the Officers of 7Bn REME and it was a privilege to be involved in the AAC 60th Anniversary at Salisbury Cathedral. And despite discovering that I am most definitely not a natural skier (and more at home in the cafe than on the slopes) I thoroughly enjoyed being able to go to Austria last year. Most importantly, though, what really matters is the quieter stuff that goes on behind the scenes, and it has been a real privilege to be able to help, listen and talk when needed.
