The editor is tempted to place 1.1. giving" in parenthesis after ""Thanks." For both our welcome and our thanks are saturated with the glorious Christian notion of giving. Immediately I am caught in a paradox, for, Franciscan.-bred, I have always held that the attitude of receiving is more fundamental than that of giving. Nonetheless, we must thank, and in only a few cases, welcome the names on the new CAECILIA masthead. None of the new Con. tributing Editors are newcomers to readers of CAECILIA, save two. And we hope that they are not really newcomers, for Father Weakland, of the Latrobe Archabbey (Pa.) is widely respected in music and musicological circles; and Paul Manz, of Concordia Col. lege, St. Paul, Minnesota, is our nominee for the Next American. Organist.-To.-Be.-Heard.-From. A graduate cum laude of the Royal Flemish Conservatory, Antwerp, and a subsequent student of Hel.. mut Walcha, he is also organist at Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church, Minneapolis. Weare profoundly grateful for the graciousness with which all accepted our invitation to join the CAECILIA staff. Of the new CAECILI.t\ Associates, let it be said that this is no mere list. They are, all of them, people whom we have had no hesitation to call upon in the past, people who have responded with interest and generosity. (There are others whose kindliness we would not press, save on spcific occasion.) Protestant or Catholic, they are, at base, devoted to the proper worship of our common Father, Son and Holy Spirit. To get back to, or approach, Thanksgiving: (we know better than you, alas, that this is the Summer number of Volume 89, and so does the U. S. Postal Department.) But we feel that CAECILIA does owe a Thanksgiving-to our Lord and Saint· Caecilia; to all its friends, subscribers and contributors. It has been a slow but steady ClJndgratifying business. We no longer expect subscriptions to sustain the magazine and advertising simply has not come. But at least we are not commercially beholden. Therefore we must again register our thanks to people like Roger Wagner and his Chorale, Msgr. Wegner and the Boys Town Choir, Msgr. Pauley and Paul Koch, Father Brunner, Father Schuler, Sr. Rosalie and unnamed others who have subsidized it personally or with concerts. During the past year we have paid one half of our debt. And if the Postal People are decent (i.e., restore our mailing privileges), they will per. haps teach us to be more prompt. And we hope, honestly, with our expanded staff, to have something in each issue of practical help to each subscriber. 43 TENTH ANNIVERSARY PROGRAM LITURGICAL MUSIC WORKSHOP August 19;31, 1962 Boys Town, Nebraska Sunday, August 19,1962-2:00 P.M. His Vigilate takes inspiration from the Italian madrigal traditions, resulting in colouring that is vivid, detailed and full of lulling suspensions. This piece is a beautiful example of Byrd’s compositional individuality and astonishingly consistent level of inspiration. Canite tuba Francisco Guerrero Francisco Guerrero was a Spanish Catholic priest and talented young composer of the Renaissance period. At age 17, Guerrero was appointed Maestro de Capilla at Jaen Cathedral, and a few years later he accepted a prestigious position in Seville. He established an exceptional reputation as a singer and composer even before his thirtieth birthday, with his music known for its powerful range of moods, from joy to despair, longing, elation and devotional stillness.

Stile Antico records for Decca. PROGRAM NOTES Our program tonight is devoted to the wonderful music of Josquin des Prez, marking 500 years since his death in 1521. Josquin was unquestionably a star in his own time: no lesser figure than Martin Luther praised him as “the master of the notes,” while for the theorist Glarean, “no one has more effectively expressed the passions of the soul in music…his talent is beyond description.” So what is it about Josquin that exerted such a spell on the generations that followed—and which still speaks so eloquently to us today? Much about Josquin’s biography and career remains shadowy: it isn’t always possible to pin down where he was working, and—with a few exceptions—the chronology of his works can only be attempted on stylistic grounds.

The Dating and Provenance of Bologna, Civico Museo Bibliografico Musicale, MS Q 19 ROBERT NOSOW It ha, now been mm·e than twenty yea" 'ince the publication of Edward E. Lowinsky's edition of the Medici Co dex.' The theses presented by Lowinsky concerning the Medici Co dex and concerning Bologna, Civico Museo Bibliografico Musicale, 92 MS Q 19, "the Rusconi Codex," have occasioned much comment and stimulated substantial new research. Most of the discussion concern ing Q 19 has been tied to the hypotheses set out by Lowinsky, and less has been said about the general problems presented by the manu script.2 In view of the recent publication of the manuscript in the Garland series of Renaissance Music in Facsimile, the time is ripe to synthesize some of the subsequent research findings-mostly pub lished as reviews of or responses to Lowinsky-and to add new evi dence that may present a solution to the problems of dating and provenance.'~ The question of the provenance of Q 19 has aroused a great deal of debate not only because of the importance of the collection, but because it offers so many different clues. I will deal briefly with the relevant aspects of physical structure and organization. The manu script comprises 211 paper folios, with 7 preliminary folios, 202 folios with original numeration in ink on the top right hand corner of each ' Edward E. Lowinsky, ed., The Medici Codex of 1518 (Chicago and London, 1968), published as vols. III-V of Monuments of Renaissance Music, 8 vols. to date, general editor Edward E.

INFORMATION TO USERS This reproduction was made from a copy o f a document sent to us for microfilming. While the most advanced technology has been used to photograph and reproduce this document, the quality of the reproduction is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help clarify markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1.The sign or “target” for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is “ Missing Page(s)” . I f it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark, it is an indication of either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, duplicate copy, or copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed. For blurred pages, a good image o f the page can be found in the adjacent frame. If copyrighted materials were deleted, a target note w ill appear listing the pages in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part o f the material being photographed, a definite method of “sectioning” the material has been followed. It is customary to begin film ing at the upper left hand comer o f a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. I f necessary, sectioning is continued again-beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete.
