    The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, July 1, 2020 * The Boston Globe College lefties drafted by Red Sox have small sample sizes but big hopes Julian McWilliams There was natural anxiety for players entering this year’s Major League Baseball draft. Their 2020 high school or college seasons had been cut short or canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They lost that chance at increasing their individual stock, and furthermore, the draft had been reduced to just five rounds. Lefthanders Shane Drohan and Jeremy Wu-Yelland felt some of that anxiety. The two were in their junior years of college. Drohan attended Florida State and Wu-Yelland played at the University of Hawaii. There was a chance both could have gone undrafted and thus would have been tasked with the tough decision of signing a free agent deal capped at $20,000 or returning to school for their senior year. “I didn’t know if I was going to get drafted,” Wu-Yelland said in a phone interview. “My agent was kind of telling me that it might happen, it might not. Just be ready for anything.” Said Drohan, “I knew the scouting report on me was I have the stuff to shoot up on draft boards but I haven’t really put it together yet. I felt like I was doing that this year and then once [the season] got shut down, that definitely played into the stress of it, like, ‘Did I show enough?’ ” As it turned out, both players showed enough. The Red Sox selected Wu-Yelland in the fourth round and Drohan in the fifth.

Neal III | Star Tribune | February 7, 2017 The Twins claimed infielder Ehire Adrianza off waivers from Milwaukee and designated relief pitcher Pat Light for assignment on Monday. Adrianza, 27, played in 40 games for San Francisco last season, hitting .254 with two home runs and seven RBI. He has played in 154 major league games, all with the Giants, and has a .220 average with three home runs. Adrianza, a native Venezuelan who plays second base and shortstop, was claimed by the Brewers off waivers from the Giants in January. Light pitched in 15 games for the Twins last season, giving up 14 earned runs in 14 innings after coming over from the Red Sox in an Aug. 1 trade for reliever Fernando Abad. Light was designated for assignment to make room for Adrianza on the 40-man roster.

    Indians come up empty in extras vs. Tigers By Jordan Bastian MLB.com @MLBastian DETROIT -- Given the extent of the Indians' bullpen issues this season, it would be easy to focus on the final pitch thrown on Saturday night. Jeimer Candelario sent it rattling into the right-field seats at Comerica Park, and Tribe closer Cody Allen made the lonely walk off the field as the party ensued at home plate. That home run was the decisive moment in Cleveland's 4-2, 12-inning loss to the Tigers, and it came after Allen volunteered for duty, despite it marking his fourth appearance in five days. Prior to that pitch, though, this had been one of the better showings of late by the Tribe's relief corps. The path to this defeat was paved by missed chances for the Indians' offense. "Credit to the pitching today," Indians catcher Yan Gomes said. "It stinks that we ended up on that side, but both sides' pitching did a tremendous job, both sides had chances to win a ballgame and both sides escaped." Detroit just happened to escape with the win. Gomes' solo homer in the third inning marked the only breakthrough against Tigers starter Mike Fiers, who filled the strike zone with fastballs and confounded Cleveland's order with his array of offspeed offerings over seven innings. At multiple turns, the right-hander found himself in a jam, but sidestepped harm to keep Detroit within striking distance. In the first, the Indians put runners on the corners with one out, but Lonnie Chisenhall chopped into an inning-ending double play.
