  • Why Did Cleveland Indians Sign Mike Napoli Instead of Pedro Alvarez?
Why did Cleveland Indians sign Mike Napoli instead of Pedro Alvarez? Hey, Hoynsie Paul Hoynes, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio – Do you have a question that you'd like to have answered in Hey, Hoynsie? Submit it here or Tweet him at @hoynsie. Hey, Hoynsie: Why did the Indians sign Mike Napoli, 34, for one year to play first base when Pedro Alvarez, 27, was available? Did management know Alvarez hit 27 home runs last season? -- Jimmy Garst, Roanoke, Va. Hey, Jimmy: The Indians did show interest in Alvarez, who was non-tendered by the Pirates and became a free agent. I think a couple of things probably came into play: No. 1, Alvarez was more expensive than the $7 million deal the Indians agreed to with Napoli. No. 2, the Indians felt Napoli helped them two ways – he gave their offense needed pop from the right side of the plate and he improved their defense. Napoli – whose deal should soon be made official – allows the Indians to move Carlos Santana to DH while he will get most of the time at first base. There is no doubt about Alvarez's power, but he made 23 errors at first base last season. I think the Indians preferred Napoli, considering the cost, at first and Santana at DH instead of Santana at first and Alvarez at DH. Hey, Hoynsie: The Reds seem interested in moving outfielder Jay Bruce. Is the Tribe done with its outfield or would it be interested in a guy who is as streaky hitter as there is, but definitely has pop? – Carl Neifer, Cincinnati.

The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, July 1, 2020 * The Boston Globe College lefties drafted by Red Sox have small sample sizes but big hopes Julian McWilliams There was natural anxiety for players entering this year’s Major League Baseball draft. Their 2020 high school or college seasons had been cut short or canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They lost that chance at increasing their individual stock, and furthermore, the draft had been reduced to just five rounds. Lefthanders Shane Drohan and Jeremy Wu-Yelland felt some of that anxiety. The two were in their junior years of college. Drohan attended Florida State and Wu-Yelland played at the University of Hawaii. There was a chance both could have gone undrafted and thus would have been tasked with the tough decision of signing a free agent deal capped at $20,000 or returning to school for their senior year. “I didn’t know if I was going to get drafted,” Wu-Yelland said in a phone interview. “My agent was kind of telling me that it might happen, it might not. Just be ready for anything.” Said Drohan, “I knew the scouting report on me was I have the stuff to shoot up on draft boards but I haven’t really put it together yet. I felt like I was doing that this year and then once [the season] got shut down, that definitely played into the stress of it, like, ‘Did I show enough?’ ” As it turned out, both players showed enough. The Red Sox selected Wu-Yelland in the fourth round and Drohan in the fifth.

  • Near-Perfect Archer Fires 1-Hitter, Rays Blank Astros Rays' Mcgee
Tampa Bay Rays Clips – August 21, 2015 Near-perfect Archer fires 1-hitter, Rays blank Astros By Marc Topkin, Tampa Bay Times HOUSTON — Chris Archer's Thursday night on the Minute Maid Park mound didn't begin well, a four-pitch walk to leadoff man Jose Altuve that flashed back to the struggles in his previous outing. But Archer's night couldn't have ended better, celebrating his complete-game one-hitter in the Rays' 1-0 victory over the Astros in a group jump with three other starting pitchers. "It felt awesome,'' Archer said. "There's really no better feeling than when you accomplish your goals, and it happens so infrequently. It's exhilarating.'' A Rays pitcher hadn't thrown a complete game in nearly a year, since Drew Smyly's gem at Toronto on Aug. 22, 2014, the 154 games in between the longest running streak by an American League team. But the Rays (60-61) needed Archer's masterful performance for more than a historic significance, coming off back-to-back extra-inning walkoff losses that taxed their bullpen and the news that top lefty reliever Jake McGee needed knee surgery and would miss most of, and potentially all of, the rest of the season. Manager Kevin Cash praised Archer for responding to the situation with his 98 pitch, 11-strikeout masterpiece. "It was kind of like an ace knowing what we were faced up against with our bullpen being stretched out the last two nights and he kind of took the game on his shoulders and really delivered,'' Cash said.

  • A's News Clips, Saturday, July 23, 2011 New York Yankees Put Hurt
A’s News Clips, Saturday, July 23, 2011 New York Yankees put hurt on Trevor Cahill, Oakland A's in 17-7 romp By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune NEW YORK -- Trevor Cahill took his struggles against the New York Yankees to another level Friday night at Yankee Stadium. The A's right-hander was charged with a career-high 10 earned runs in a 17-7 blowout defeat to open a three-game series. The A's have now lost 11 straight to the Yankees. Cahill allowed nine hits and lasted just two-plus innings in the shortest start of his career. After being staked to a 2-0 lead, he allowed five runs in the bottom of the second. Then he allowed Nick Swisher's three-run homer in the third, as the Yankees batted around in a nine-run rally. Michael Wuertz relieved Cahill in the third but fared no better, walking in two runs before allowing Mark Teixeira's grand slam. Cahill's 10 earned runs were the most allowed by an A's starter since Gio Gonzalez surrendered 11 to the Twins on July 20, 2009. Oakland A's update: Rookie second baseman Jemile Weeks savors first trip to Yankee Stadium By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune NEW YORK -- When A's rookie second baseman Jemile Weeks arrived at Yankee Stadium on Friday afternoon, he immediately went out to the field to take it all in. "You're talking a big deal, first time at Yankee Stadium," Weeks said. "It's an exciting time for me, just to look at the stadium and out into the stands to get a feel of what it's like." Weeks certainly played inspired in his first visit to the ballpark.

The 2019 TBL Annual 3 the TBL baseball annual Welcome to the 2019 TBL Baseball Annual. This is the twenty-fifth year of the Annual in the book format. This year we’re looking at the rebuild – certainly one of the most discussed topics in every TBL offseason. We’ve assembled a collection of insightful articles, including our lead from Robert, Joe Auletta’s deconstruction of the concept of rebuild, a Rich Meyer discussion of unbuilding, and a scholarly discussion of bullpens from Paul Montague. The staff would also like to thank Craig Musselman and Joe Auletta for help with Year in Review articles. Our usual collection of team and division articles, and most of our usual features are here. Once again, we’re glad to present the best of TBL, our great APBA league, now old enough to run for President. Enjoy the Annual and enjoy the season. Walter, Robert, Mark May, 2019 The T.Q.
