This study examines the phenomenon of contemporary a cappella music making found in high school settings as curricular and extra-curricular offerings. Past music and music education literature has focused exclusively on contemporary a cappella at the collegiate level. Through application of a descriptive phenomenological method and incorporation an educational- sociological lens, this study advances an understanding of the educational benefit and social value of membership in contemporary a cappella at the high school level. Six recent members from three regions of the United States provided data through individual open-form interviews in which questions were derived from the participants’ own speech. I incorporated phenomenological reductions and processes to negate researcher bias during data collection, analysis, and the formation of a general structure and constituent

  • Maltese-Canadian Victor Micallef Shines with the Canadian Tenors Story About This Talented Toronto Resident on Page 6
FMLA Newsletter Issue 12 September 2011 Maltese-Canadian Victor Micallef Shines with The Canadian Tenors Story about this talented Toronto resident on page 6. From the Editor’s Desk: MORE Music In Our Lives Not long ago in the Maltese Link, I wrote about the important role music always has in the lives of Maltese emigrants, describing the many family and social events that took place in New York City when my mother was growing up. Today, we leave New York and go to Toronto to meet Victor Micallef, a Maltese-Canadian, who is part of the Canadian Tenors. Victor began his music training at the piano was he was four, but he also liked singing. Very shy by his own admission, Victor‟s father, the late Joe encouraged him to sing at St. Paul‟s Church, in Toronto‟s Maltese community. He sang solo in the choir at Mass and also at weddings, funerals, and special programs at the church. Sadly, his father passed away when he was 16, but Micallef kept on with the piano lessons and singing. It was this early nurturing in the Toronto Maltese community, he says, that was instrumental in who he is today and what he is doing. When he was 16, Victor began formal voice lessons and later went on to the University of Western Ontario and the University of Toronto to earn a Bachelor‟s degree in vocal performance. Flash forward: This once shy performer is now one of the Canadian Tenors, an ensemble of four men who have mesmerized audiences throughout the world with their solo and collective voices.

Supportive Catholic community helps Toronto singer become a star with The Tenors Written by Allison Hunwicks, The Catholic Register Saturday, 03 November 2012 12:00 TORONTO - Victor Micallef, a member of the internationally acclaimed singing group The Tenors, began his successful musical career with a stroke of good fortune. “I was always attracted to music,” says Micallef. “My sister was taking piano lessons when I was about three or four years old and my family couldn‟t afford both of us taking lessons, so I just watched her take lessons and she hated it. She just couldn‟t stand it,” he laughs. “One day she turned to our parents and said she didn‟t want to take lessons any more… that was victory for me!” After his fortuitous piano incident, Micallef was led by his late father to the opportunity that would one day become his career and passion: singing. Victor Micallef of The Tenors (second from left) got “I was a very shy boy… I didn‟t like singing in front of people. One his musical start singing at a church in Toronto. His day (my father) went to my parish priest (at St. Paul the Apostle in bandmates are Clifton Murray (to Micallef‟s right), Toronto) who was Fr. Jimmy Zammit, and he just said: Vic wants to Remibio Pereira on his left and Fraser Walters. sing. I did a double take! I was petrified,” says Micallef, who soon - Photo by Edith Held afterwards began working as a cantor at the church. “That was my early childhood education… Fr.
