HISTORICAL DISSIDENCE: THE TEMPORALITIES AND RADICAL POSSIBILITIES OF AMERICAN COMICS by Jeremy M. Carnes A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee May 2020 ABSTRACT HISTORICAL DISSIDENCE: THE TEMPORALITIES AND RADICAL POSSIBILITIES OF AMERICAN COMICS by Jeremy M. Carnes The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2020 Under the Supervision of Professor Jason Puskar Formal criticism of comics has often focused on the importance of sequence and the filling of gutters with causative logics. Practitioner-theorists like Will Eisner and Scott McCloud have focused on “sequentiality” and “closure” to conceive of how readers connect the disparate panels of a given comic. More contemporary scholars of the form have followed Eisner and McCloud, foregrounding the causative logics that create narrative progression in the comics form.

The course will offer a history of comic books in Canada, while focusing on iconic texts from this history. The chosen comic books represent a number of different genres. Through reading, writing, and discussion, the class will explore the ways in which these comics articulate notions of the nation-state, geopolitics, heroism, and Canadian identity. The course will also explore questions surrounding the materiality of comic books. As such, the course will ask students to consider the creation, publication, and reception of comic books. How are comic books different from other media? What role do comic books play in popular culture? Why are so many of these Canadian comics published in the United States? Are the terms “comic book” and “graphic novel” synonymous? Does it matter? By exploring the conditions under which comics are produced and disseminated, this course will explore the cultural role played by comic books in Canada. • Guide to Self-Publishing. in the 1990S, Sim Used Cerebus to Promote His Increasingly Controversial Views on Politics, Religion and Women
Canadian Independent Publishing: Can Indies Survive? In the past couple of decades, there has been a lot of Canadian talent that have moved south and become stars of the comic book industry. Names like Seth McFarlane, John Byrne, Ian Boothby and George Freeman come to mind. However some choose to stay in Canada and create great graphic novels here. As a result, there are publishers of comics springing up across the country. Some exist only to publish one title while others may represent a roster of talent. Being an independent publisher in a country like Canada is difficult...the population is spread out over a vast area, and this can lead to isolation, and the feeling that there is no cohesive scene. There are vibrant comic communities in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal, with smaller hives of activity elsewhere. The comic book industry itself has seen a downturn in sales since the mid 1990s, just as interest in graphic novels was increasing in libraries across North America. In Canada, the small presses that exist have not been immune to this tumult. Since August of 2004, the respected indie publisher Highwater Books, known for its roster of new talent and attention to quality, has folded, and Dreamwave Productions, publishers of the Transformers comics have ceased operations. However, there have been some successes. This article will explore a few publishers who have managed to survive creating and publishing in Canada. In 1977, Dave Sim created Aardvark-Vanaheim to publish his Cerebus comic at a time when self-publishing was unheard of. Initially Cerebus started out as a tale of an Aardvark knight that satirized other comic book heroes and tropes, but quickly developed into something more.

  • Female Sexuality Represented in the Character Catwoman
TREACHEROUS, DEVIANT, AND SUBMISSIVE: FEMALE SEXUALITY REPRESENTED IN THE CHARACTER CATWOMAN Michael Lecker A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2007 Committee: Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Marilyn F. Motz ii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A.
