    Unravelling Devon involvement in Slave-Ownership Lucy MacKeith ‘The early history of the United States of America owes more to Devon than to any other English county.’ Charles Owen (ed.), The Devon-American Story (1980) My task this afternoon is to unravel Devon’s involvement in slave-ownership. I have found the task overwhelming because of constantly finding new information – there are leads to follow down little branches of family trees, there are Devon’s country houses, a wealth of documents, and – of course – the internet. So this is a VERY brief introduction to unravelling Devon’s involvement with slave- ownership – much has been left out. Let’s start with Elias Ball. His story is in Slaves in the Family, written by descendant Edward Ball and published in 1998. Elias Ball by Jeremiah Theus (1716-1774). ‘Elias Ball, ...was born in 1676 in a tiny hamlet in western England called Stokeinteignhead. He inherited a plantation in Carolina at the end of the seventeenth century ...His life shows how one family entered the slave business in the birth hours of America. It is a tale composed equally of chance, choice and blood.’ The book has many Devon links – an enslaved woman called Jenny Buller reminds us of Redvers Buller’s family, a hill in one of the Ball plantations called ‘Hallidon Hill’ reminds us of Haldon Hill just outside Exeter; two family members return to England, one after the American War of Independence. This was Colonel Wambaw Elias Ball who had been involved in trading in enslaved Africans in Carolina. He was paid £12,700 sterling from the British Treasury and a lifetime pension in compensation for the slaves he had lost in the war of independence.

It has been working hard to address the shortage of affordable housing within a predominantly rural area. The area covered by the project displays an extreme disparity between incomes and house prices, which makes it hard for many to gain secure footing within the housing market. The Rural Housing Project is designed to help promote and deliver affordable rural housing strategically across the project area and helps deliver Exmoor National Park housing policies within the Park. This is being achieved by informing people about affordable rural housing, providing help and advice, carrying out research at a parish level to assess the affordable housing need and bringing together the community and various partners to help deliver housing where it is needed. One of the tasks for the project is to work with the Parish Council and the local community to assist them in carrying out a housing needs survey, in order to identify whether there is a need for affordable housing for local people in the parish.

This year’s concerts start on a high note on Saturday May 12th at St Luke’s with the renowned Wellensian Consort performing a unique programme of uplifting traditional and contemporary piec- es, including a new choral work by a local composer based on the poetry of an Exmoor farmer. Other highlights include the prestigious duo of outstanding opera singers Alaudiae, with a selection of songs from past to present celebrating love; vintage Brazilian music from Radio Rio; gypsy jazz from the exciting Kamao Quartet from London; Gilbert and Sullivan’s much-loved comic opera The Mikado, performed with fun and flair by Opera Anywhere. Speakers include Sarah Bryan, chief executive of Exmoor National Park, who will be exploring the opportunities and challenges presented by post-Brexit Britain; Revd David Weir, Rector of Exmoor, who talks about a lifetime in the Church of England, with stories of some colourful local characters from the past; the ever-popular Rob Wilson-North, who shares his seemingly infinite knowledge of the Knight family who made Exmoor; TV wildlife expert and conservationist Chris Sperring, who sheds light on the owls of Exmoor.   • Adventures at Longlands Adventures on Exmoor & North Devon
    Adventures at Longlands Longlands has a boating lake and 2 skiffs: Oxford & Cambridge, so you can race around the island in your very own Boat Race! Each boat can take one adult and one child. Life jackets of varying sizes are provided. There are stream walks and nature trails in our woods, and lots of sticks with which to practice den building. We have a number of outdoor games including petanque/boules, cricket, rounders and badmington, all of which can be played in the lakeside meadow. There is a football goal on the football field, a cricket net above it and a basketball & netball hoop near the Larder. So score a goal, hit a run or shoot a hoop! Our streamside and woodland walks are very sheltered, so are excellent for rainy days. Bug hunt along the stream, discover animal tracks and perhaps even spot deer in the woods. Our shop is stocked with lots of adventure kits including Bug Hunting, Ponding dipping, Bird spotting and even Den kits and kites! Within the lodges themselves we have a box of favourite family games including Monopoly, Scrabble, Cluedo, Risk, Jengo, Dominoes, Uno & playing cards, and in the Larder you’ll find plenty of books to borrow. Next to the Longlands Larder there is a covered area with Table Tennis & Giant Jenga and within the shop itself there are colouring and activity books to provide endless entertainment even on the wettest of days. Exmoor is the best place for stargazing in the UK, according to the Campaign for Dark Skies. In fact it is the first designated International Dark Sky Reserve in Europe - and Longlands looks directly on to it - Definitely worth staying up for on a clear night.
