Although the book can be read on its own, I recommend that it be read as part of the Codex Alera series, beginning with the Furies of Calderon. Someday I will invest in a full set of hardbacks, as I anticipate reading and re-reading the series I re-read The Lord of the Rigns about every 2 years, and have since the late 60's. Intrigue, characters, growth, a world threat that you see from start to end, inheritance struggles, secret identities, friendship, love, and magic everywhere! The only thing that kept it from a five star was the long drawn out battle scenes, other than that, this was pretty damn amazing.
