Atlanta Braves Clippings Thursday, May 21, 2020 Braves.Com
Atlanta Braves Clippings Thursday, May 21, 2020 Braves.com Braves' 1957, '95 WS teams in Dream Bracket 2 By Mark Bowman ATLANTA -- The Braves’ two most recent World Series-winning teams will represent the organization in MLB Dream Bracket 2: Dream Seasons, which begins on Thursday. Major League Baseball, in conjunction with the makers of Out of the Park Baseball 21, have created this best-of-seven series simulation tournament, which includes some of the most successful clubs in each franchise’s history. Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews will match up against Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling when the 1957 Milwaukee Braves meet the 2001 D-backs in the first round of the National League’s Region 1. As you may remember, this is the same Arizona squad that needed just five games to eliminate Atlanta from the ‘01 NL Championship Series. Chipper Jones and Atlanta’s Cy Young Award-winning trio of Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and John Smoltz will battle Ryan Braun and Zack Greinke when the 1995 Braves face off against the 2011 Brewers in the other first-round matchup in the NL’s Region 2. Twenty-five years later, this remains the only Braves team to win a World Series since the franchise moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta in 1966. Aaron, Mathews, Red Schoendienst and Warren Spahn were the Hall of Famers that highlighted the 1957 Braves roster. Aaron hit 44 homers and won his only NL Most Valuable Player Award at the end of this memorable season. Spahn also won his only Cy Young Award that year. -

“The Yankees Stand for Tradition, Excellence and Winning.”
Randy Levine President New York Yankees Robert Reiss: What is the Yankees brand and “The Yankees stand for tradition, what does it really stand for? excellence and winning.” Randy Levine: The Yankees brand, in my opinion, and I think in many people’s opinions, is the most well known, most respected sports brand in the world. It’s based on the traditions of excellence, winning and a certain way of presenting what Yankees baseball is all about. The Yankees are about tradition. Everything we do is related to that. We’ve had the same uniform – the famous interlocking N and Y – and we’ve never changed it. Although we have a new Yankee Stadium, it looks just like the original Yankee Stadium. We respect our tra- ditions and the great players who have represented the franchise over the years. Everything from Monument Park to Old-Timers’ Day demonstrates that our past is part of our future. Although we have to be innovative and have a relevant message in today’s times, the Yan- kees stand for tradition, excellence and winning. What would you never capitulate on? 40 The CEO Forum www.ceoforum.ceo Randy Levine President New York Yankees We would never capitulate on fundamentally changing “When it comes to the Yankees team, it’s what the brand means. There have been many teams, that for many reasons, change uniforms all the time. It much more important to provide a winning may be good for them in their market in terms of help- championship season to our fans and ing to generate revenue. -

Ephs in Major League Baseball
Ephs in Major League Baseball The Nine Men Who Played for Williams College And in “The Big Show” Artie Clarke Ted Lewis Henry Clarke Jack Mills Paul Otis George Davis Alex Burr Mark Filley Charlie Perkins Rory Costello ’84 With a foreword by Fay Vincent ’60 Former Commissioner of Major League Baseball Foreword Williams College, the small liberal arts college in northwestern Massachusetts, has not produced a major league baseball player since the early 1930s, when two young pitchers – Charlie Perkins and Mark Filley – had the proverbial cup of coffee in The Show. That college did send George Steinbrenner and me forward to non-playing (and, some would argue, non-productive) roles in our great game – but until now there had been no effort to consider the set of early players who made it even if briefly. Rory Costello has produced this delightful monograph telling the stories of the nine former Williams players who made it to the majors, and in doing so he shows us some fascinating aspects of those long gone days. Not surprisingly, five of the nine players later became lawyers. Filley served as a family court judge in New York State, and Jack Mills – a star third baseman in college who later became a prominent Washington lawyer – is one of perhaps the only two former big-leaguers to have argued a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. The other was an Amherst alumnus whom Mills had opposed in 1909 and 1910 in college, Larry McClure. Interestingly, four of the nine played in a four-year period, three for the old New York Highlanders, the predecessor to the Yankees. -
