Round 16 - 28 July 2018 2 Round 16 – 28 July 2018 39 www.bdafl.com.au www.bdafl.com.au PREVIEW—ROUND 16 BARTV MATCH OF THE WEEK

In Round 16 of the Hunter Haval Black Diamond Cup, Killarney Vale host Newcastle City, Maitland host Cardiff, Gosford are away to Singleton, Warners Bay head to Tulkaba Park to play near- neighbours Lake Macquarie and in a huge day at Hylton Moore Oval, North Melbourne & West Coast Eagles legend Drew Petrie will make a guest appearance for Terrigal Avoca when they host Nelson Bay in the BARTV Match of the Round. Terrigal Avoca have a huge Panthers Day planned in their last home game of the season this Saturday against struggling Nelson Bay. AFL 300-gamer Drew Petrie, a very good friend of Panthers stalwart Matthew Shortal, will make a guest appear- ance for the Panthers, a great promotion for the local game and a move that will result in a great crowd at Hylton Moore Oval. Panthers coach Chris Bishop has his men in simply superb form and will use this week to fine-tune his squad before the Panthers finish the season at Hillsborough and then Newcastle No.1 Sportsground against Cardiff and Newcastle City respectively. Nelson Bay, coming off the Bye, have a huge task in front of them, with along trip as well as facing up to the rampant Panthers 22. In a season in which coach Sean McGrath has almost no opportunity to field a consistent 22, the performances of ruckman Billy Barton, backline general Joel Erickson and star follower Jayden Rymer have been the shining lights of an otherwise disappointing and tough season at Dick Burwell Oval. Killarney Vale, after a big win over Warners Bay last Saturday, have another huge day at Adelaide St Oval when they host a very confident Newcastle City. Coach Scott Reed still has an eye on qualifying in fifth place for the Finals series, with Josh Mifsud, ruck Tim Oosterhoff and Brendan Lewis in all excellent form. Oosterhoff rates burly City ruckman Cam Keast as his toughest opponent, meaning this Saturday’s ruck duel will be a beauty. Aidan Watling is developing rapidly, one of a bevy of talented City youngsters including Max Quinlan and Reed Huisstede. Ethan Durbridge, Mac O’Malley and Cade Triffitt are all playing very consistent footy, and key forward Patrick Gillingham is simply in career-best form, com- ing off twelve goals last week. Singleton commence their final two-game home set (before a last round bye) against a Gosford side that are one win away from qualifying for the Finals series. Both teams struggled away last week and will want to re-focus leading into August. Roosters stars Sam Brasington and Andrew Scott lead a Sin- gleton side that are safely in the finals but need to keep winning to ensure a fourth or fifth placed finish and a potential first semi-final against Warners Bay. Gosford, badly missing Adam Lyons, must win one game in the next two weeks or else they face a possible sudden-death last home and away game at Adcock Park against Wyong Lakes. The Tigers need to focus, and not rely on Scott Burkinshaw, Alex Remy, Josh Barty and Daniel White if they are make the finals in their first year back in the Black Diamond Cup. Maitland host Cardiff at Max McMahon Oval This Weeks Broadcast match with the Saints looking for some solid performances for the rest of the season to build toward a more successful Terrigal Avoca vs Nelson Bay 2019. Mitch Greaves, Riley Newstead, Andrew Wilmot and Dustin Spriggs have been most consistent for the Watch the match live, or on replay at: Saints. Cardiff, who finish the season at home against Terrigal Avoca then Warners Bay, still have an eye on the www.bdafl.com.au Minor Premiership and subsequent week off. The Hawks have stars all over the ground, with a back six led by Zac Metcalfe, a versatile forward line featuring Lachlan Price, Jack Lennon and Josh Murphy and pure class in the midfield, led by Simon O’Brien, Marcus DeLeur, reigning Elliott Davey Medallist Tom Yensch and Lennon when he rotates through the midfield. Warners Bay were disappointed with their performance at Adelaide St last week and will look to their next two games against the Dockers then Maitland in a bid to steady the ship before a huge last-round fixture against fierce rivals Cardiff in the last-ever Hawks home at Hillsborough . The expected return of SOCIAL MEDIA Ben Hunter (work), Jack Hardman (unavailable) and tyro ruckman Tom McDonell (illness) will give the Bulldogs a full strength squad to choose from. Jake Roach will use the next three weeks to gain full fitness after a long-term quad injury hampered his 2018 season, whilst key forward Kayne Gibbs will need to perform against the Dockers in his bid to be cherry-ripe for the finals. The Dockers are still struggling to field the same 22 each week as they are playing purely for pride for the rest of the season. The return of Damon Tually and Daniel Zuzek will be important for Tom Croft’s men, as will the consistency of Oliver Bunny, who has produced a very solid Cup season for the w w w. b d a fl . co m . a u Dockers. Wyong Lakes have the bye. In the GE Womens Competition, Port Stephens are away to Terrigal Avoca; Killarney Vale host the Newcastle City Novas; Warners Bay head to Passage Road to play The Entrance Bateau Bay; Wallsend-West Newcastle host Wyong Lakes; undefeated Nelson Bay play second-placed Newcastle City Stars, with both teams struggling with several serious injuries; Maitland host Cardiff; Singleton are at home to Gosford; and Muswellbrook visit Lake Macquarie. In the Black Diamond Plate, Newcastle City are away to Killarney Vale, Maitland host Cardiff, Singleton host Gosford, Muswellbrook are away to Lake Macquarie, Terrigal Avoca host Nelson Bay, Warners Bay are away to The Entrance Bateau Bay and Wyong Lakes are away to Wallsend-West Black Diamond AFL @bdafl bdafl Newcastle.

Round 16 - 28 July 2018 38 Round 16 – 28 July 2018 3 www.bdafl.com.au www.bdafl.com.au DARREL LUCK CREATES HISTORY

This Saturday at Hylton Moore Oval, Darrel Luck will be the first player or umpire in Black Diamond AFL History to participate in 300 Black Diamond Cup matches. Luck’s extraordinary achievement, in which he will umpire a fixture featuring North Melbourne and West Coast legend Drew Petrie, comes at the relatively young age of 48. When asked about umpiring 300 Black Diamond Cup games, Luck advised; “It’s a big milestone in anybody’s terms. As umpires, we don’t go out there every week thinking about milestones, but they do come about just like players. I know (Killarney Vale’s) Dane Amidy had his own milestone recent- ly, so certainly it’s going to be a big day for me on Saturday. I recently chalked up 400 BDAFL matches, which I am also very proud of.” In looking back on his footballing journey, Luck stated; “I played footy in the Football Associa- tion for the St Ives Club. I injured myself in second season, about half-way through the season, so I decided to start umpiring in Sydney. I umpired about 150 games in Sydney, with my biggest achievement being umpiring a Reserve Grade Grand Final at Monarch Field in Campbelltown. I then moved up to the Central Coast and did some umpiring with the Central Coast AFL. The CCAFL then amalgamated with the Newcastle AFL to form the Black Diamond AFL, and I have been umpiring with the BDAFL since its inception in 2000.” When asked about his umpiring future, Luck said; “Look, I still very much enjoy what I do. People have asked me if I am considering retirement, and I tell them that I would like to continue umpiring for another good couple of seasons. I love the role of mentoring young umpires coming through. I’ve had the wonderful opportunity of mentoring Joey O’Brien & Stephen Blume as they have come through the ranks, to these young umpires progress to the AFLW and the NEAFL has been great. There’s more young umpires to come through the ranks, and that will give me a great opportunity to give something back to the game.” Luck explained that he does a significant amount of running to keep him in good shape for umpiring; “I try to run at least every second day, to try and keep some fitness up. I did actually think of retiring last season when I tore a calf muscle back in Round 4, which took me out of umpiring for 6-7 weeks. I didn’t know what to do myself during that time, but I was convinced to mentor and give feedback to other umpires when they going around. That kept me occupied and in the game.” Luck, who is a Science teacher at Lake Munmorah and Belmont High Schools, and his wife Kylie have five children, the youngest of whom, Elise, is just three weeks old. Luck ex- plained that he has seen some great footballers in his time in the BDAFL; “That’s a tough one to nominate the best players I have umpired. The three that come to mind are Clint Austerberry, Angus Darling (both Elliott Davey Med- allists) and Chris Bishop. They have all stood out in their respective timeframes, as did Michael Ryan and Maurice Goolagong in their primes.” We thank Darrel Luck for his huge contribution to football in our region, over an amazing 18-year period. Darrel Luck’s Achievements Darrel has umpired in every year of the BDAFL and has notched up a total of 411 BDAFL matches, second behind the legendary John Sullivan. As a field umpire, he has officiated in 402 BDAFL matches. His tally including 300 Black Diamond Cup Matches, 16 Plate matches, 5 Second Division, 26 Reserve Grade, 52 Under 18s and 3 Women's matches. Luck has officiated in 7 Black Diamond Cup Grand Finals; 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2015 and has officiated in one Representative Fixture, in 2008, when he officiated in the BDAFL vs North Coast AFL match at Number One Sportsground at Under 18 level. Darrel also officiated in 2 First Division Grand Finals (2012- 2013), a Second Division Grand Final (2014), 2 Reserve Grade Grand Finals (2010-2011), 2 Under 18 Grand Finals (2008-2009). In 2001, 2007 (joint winner) and 2013, Darrel was awarded the NCCUA Umpire of the Year award, as well as the NCCUA Field Umpire of the Year in 2007 and 2013. Darrel has been a magnificent servant to the NCCUA, being awarded the 2005, 2012 and 2013 Club Person of the Year Award for his services to the Association and in 2015 won the Inaugural “President’s Award”. Darrel is an NCCUA and BDAFL Life Member and an NCCUA Inductee in its Hall of Fame. Luck served on the NCCUA committee for 13 years, 8 of those as the President of the NCCUA (2006-2013), 1 year as Vice President (2002), 4 years as Committee Member (2000, 2014, 2015, 2016) and one year as co-coach of the Umpiring Group (2000). His commitment to the recruitment, retention and promotion of umpiring in the Hunter / Central Coast Region, is second to none. Round 16 - 28 July 2018 4 Round 16 – 28 July 2018 37 www.bdafl.com.au www.bdafl.com.au BLUME IS MAKING AN IMPRESSION

Black Diamond AFL Umpire Stephen Blume has built a very impres- sive umpiring resume despite being only 20 years of age. Apart from his promising umpiring resume Blume was recently named the 2018 Sport NSW Community Sports Awards Young Offi- cial of the Year, a great honour and, as he advised, a huge surprise. “I was surprised to even get nominated, to be honest. Emily Brown, the Northern Umpiring Co-ordinator, nominated me and then I went to Parliament House in Sydney for the Award Ceremony. We all got the programs, I read the bios of the other nominees, they were very impressive, and when my name got read out as the win- ner, I was shocked.” Blume commenced umpiring junior games when he was just 13. “I was playing at the time, so I was only umpiring on the side. I started boundary umpiring in that year in Seniors, then I started as a Cen- tral Umpire when I was 14. I then stopped playing as I wanted to focus on my umpiring, but I didn’t realise that it was going to take me this far. I played junior footy for the Cardiff Hawks, we won the premiership in Under 15s, then I said ‘that’s me done’ and I just focussed on umpiring, because I was always a hopeless player.” Blume has umpired the past two Black Diamond Cup Grand Finals and in 2017 he became part of the NEAFL Umpir- ing Academy. “I’m part of the Academy, which is hopefully progressing me toward umpiring NEAFL games in the near future. They changed the system last year, it used to be called the NSW-ACT Umpiring Academy, then in 2017 they rebranded the Academy, re-did the lists and I managed to become part of the NEAFL Umpiring Academy.” Blume was nominated to the NEAFL Pathway by BDAFL Umpires Coach Christine Burrows. “Christine has been my main point of contact to get to the NEAFL, she monitors all umpires in the BDAFL and when spots become available in Sydney, she will nominate umpires for possible progression. Umpires may be given the chance to umpire in Syd- ney and we see if we sink or swim.” Blume advised that he has umpired five games in Sydney in 2018 after debuting in Sydney last year. “My first game was Pennant Hills vs North Shore as part of a ‘Return to the Ern’ day at their old ground, it (Ern Holmes Oval) is a really long, skinny ground, it was a good day.” When asked how his umpiring schedule is arranged, Blume said; “At the start of the season, Christine Burrows and my NEAFL Umpiring Academy leader Pierce Field created a schedule for me. They set out 5 or 6 dates that were potential dates for me to umpire in Sydney, taking into account what’s happening in the BDAFL and what’s happen- ing in Sydney. I have a rough idea of what I am doing in advance, of course that is subject to change.” When asked if he was enjoying umpiring in Sydney, Blume advised; “Yes, I am enjoying it very much. There is more running down in Sydney. I would average 12kms per match in the BDAFL, whereas in Sydney that increases to 14- plus kilometres per game. The ball moves quicker and some of the ground sizes in Sydney are massive.” Blume is a second year University student, studying Exercise and Sports Science at Charles Sturt University, Bath- urst, via Distance Education. “Umpire Training is in Sydney on Thursdays and Tuesdays on alternate weeks, it’s hard for me to do Uni lectures on Campus and be in Sydney for training. I looked at the University of Newcastle, but everything collides and I wouldn’t be able to give umpiring a full go, so I thought I would do Uni by distance and see how that goes.” Blume explained that once he has graduated, he is looking at being a Physiotherapist or an Exercise Physiologist. “I go to Bathurst to do Tests; I actually have one when the BDAFL Preliminary Finals are scheduled, so that will be interesting.” We thank Stephen Blume for his time and wish all the very best in coming seasons as he follows the path of Joey O’Brien into top level umpiring. In the inaugural BDAFL Representative Challenge played at a sun-drenched Ferodale Park in Medowie on Saturday, Newcastle produced two convincing performances in defeating both Central Coast and Hunter to take out the Representative Challenge Shield for the first time. Spearheaded by the in-form Tayla Braithwaite, Sarah Halvorsen and co-captain Amy Pittman, Newcastle overcame an early goal from Central Coast to eventually beat the Coasties by 12 points, 3.6.24 to 1.6.12 in Game 1. In a match featuring great tackling, intense pressure and great defense, Braithwaite (playing a kick behind the ball), centre-half forward Halvorsen and rover Pittman led Newcastle to a solid win. Arizona Cross, French player Lisa Morales and Sam Delaney also shone for Newcastle. 150-game player Emily Bohan was superb at fullback for the Coast, her intercept marking a feature of the game. She was well supported by Ashleigh Page, Jocelyn Kelleher, Tash Gregory and Alexandra Pearce.
