TEAM NOTES:

SIGNATURE WIN Patric Hornqvist’s overtime goal in Game 4 gave the Penguins arguably their first signature win – and perhaps the most important one – in the history of CONSOL Energy Center. Sure, the Penguins closed out the Rangers in Round 1 and the in the second round of the 2013 playoffs, but Pittsburgh held commanding 3-1 series leads in those situations. Hornqvist’s goal ended the Penguins’ eight-game overall overtime losing streak, and a four-game home overtime losing streak since CONSOL Energy Center opened in 2010. The Penguins are now 8-3 all-time in playoff overtimes against the Capitals (1-1 in this series) and 6-2 in such games at home. The Hornqvist goal was the first playoff overtime goal scored by a Penguins player since Kris Letang did so against the Capitals on May 6, 2009 (Game 3).

PATRIC ON THE SPOT When a Capitals’ miscue put the puck on Patric Hornqvist’s stick in OT on Wednesday, he took advantage, burying a through the five-hole of Braden Holtby for his first NHL playoff overtime AND game-winning goal. Hornqvist has registered one overtime goal in 509 career regular-season games (March 7, 2015 at LAK). Since the Christmas break, Hornqvist has been extremely consistent for the Penguins offensively, producing 48 points (22G-26A) in 58 games (0.38 G/GM; 0.83 Pts/GM); versus just 11 points (5G-6A) in his first 33 games (0.15 G/GM; 0.33 Pts/GM). Hornqvist has already produced more points in 14 playoff games with Pittsburgh than he did in 24 postseason contests with the Nashville Predators:

Team GP G A PTS PTS/GM PIT 14 7 4 11 0.79 NSH 24 3 5 8 0.33

PICKING UP THE SLACK The Penguins were minus their top D-pair in Game 4 with Kris Letang suspended and Olli Maatta injured. It mattered little as Trevor Daley assumed Letang’s role of being the Penguins’ best skater on the ice, scoring the opening goal, leading the team with 28:41 minutes and finishing a plus-3. Only Letang has more points among Pittsburgh defenders than Daley this spring. During the regular season, only Nashville’s and teammate Carl Hagelin produced more points among midseason acquisitions than Daley’s 22 (6G-16A).

AGELESS WONDER A strong case can be made that Matt Cullen has been Pittsburgh’s best forward this series. He added another bullet point to the argument in Game 4, scoring Pittsburgh’s second goal, which gives him four points (2G-2A) over his last five games. Cullen’s five points thus far this spring are his highest playoff total since he had eight against the Penguins in 2010 as a member of the Ottawa Senators. Since Feb. 2, Cullen has produced 15 goals and 24 points in 43 games (includes regular season), which projects to 29 tallies over a full season. Here are the Penguins’ goal leaders since Feb. 2:

Sidney Crosby 22 Patric Hornqvist 17 Matt Cullen 15 Phil Kessel 14 Carl Hagelin 13

MURRAY STAYS STRONG Matt Murray has the Penguins one win from the conference final for the fourth time since 2008. He’s done so by going 3-1 here in Round 2 against the Capitals, stopping 135 of 144 shots (.938 SVP) in 252 minutes played (2.14 goals-against average). During the regular season, opposition goaltenders combined to post a 3.02 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage in 82 games against the Capitals. Since allowing four goals in Game 1 of this series, Murray has stopped 104 of his last 109 shots the past three contests (.954 SVP). Per the Elias Sports Bureau, Murray’s six victories in the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs are the most by a rookie goaltender in Penguins history within a single playoff year. He passed Gary Inness, who registered five such wins during the 1975 postseason. With his next win, Murray will become just the fifth goalie in Penguins history to record seven or more wins in a single playoff year, joining (4 times), Marc-Andre Fleury (4 times), Ken Wregget (once) and Johan Hedberg (once).

THIS N’ AT *Nick Bonino (5 games) and Carl Hagelin (4 games) saw their playoff career high point streaks come to a close in Game 4. *Although they were shut out in Game 4, the line of Bonino (6G-19A-25PTS), Hagelin (9G-9A-18PTS) and Phil Kessel (9G-13A- 22PTS) has combined for 65 points (24G-41A) in 24 games together. *Pittsburgh is a perfect 4-0 in the playoffs when it is outshot. *Including the regular season, the Penguins (1 for 32) and the Capitals (3 for 28) are a combined 4 for 60 (6.7%) on the power play against one another. *The Penguins are looking to advance beyond the second round of the playoffs in 10 or less games for just the second time in team history (9 games in 2008). *Pittsburgh has scored at least three goals in seven of its nine playoff games. *The Penguins have received points from 15 of the 21 players who have dressed in the series thus far.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: PENGUINS vs. CAPITALS – GAME 4 *The win improved Pittsburgh to 25-25 all-time in OT, including 14-15 at home. *Prior to this victory, the Penguins had won just two of the first 11 games that Kris Letang had missed this year. *Pittsburgh has won 20 of its last 25 games at CONSOL Energy Center. *Brian Dumoulin stepped up in a big way, notching his first playoff multi-point game (2A), including an assist on Patric Hornqvist’s OT goal. *Tom Kuhnhackl has points in back-to-back playoff games (1G-1A) for the first time in his career. *Oskar Sundqvist and Justin Schultz both played for the first time in the playoffs since Game 1 against the Rangers in Round 1. *With Eric Fehr sidelined, Bryan Rust stepped up and played the right side on a line with Evgeni Malkin and Chris Kunitz.

DID YOU KNOW… The first four games of the Capitals-Penguins series have ended in one goal margins, with two requiring overtime. Per the Elias Sports Bureau, the Capitals and Penguins have been tied or within one goal for 79.6% of total playing time (200:40 of 252:07).
