Translated by Wordport from Xywrite-III Document ASK.TXT USA ALPINE SKIING OLYMPIC HISTORY US Olympic History: The United States has competed in Alpine skiing at every Olympic Winter Games at which the sport has been on the Olympic Program, which is since 1936. The first great USA Alpine skiing Olympian was Gretchen Fraser, who won two medals at the 1948 St. Moritz Games, with a slalom gold and a combined silver. She was followed by Andrea Mead-Lawrence who starred at the 1952 Oslo Games, winning two gold medals in the giant slalom and slalom. No Americans won medals in 1956 but in 1960 at Squaw Valley, Penny Pitou won two silver medals in downhill and giant slalom, with Betsy Snite winning the slalom silver medal. Through 1960, no American man had won a medal with the best finish to that date a 4th- place by Tom Corcoran in the 1960 giant slalom. American men finally broke through to win Alpine skiing Olympic medals in 1964 at Innsbruck when Billy Kidd and Jimmy Heuga placed 2-3 in the slalom on the last day of the Games. It would be another 16 years before a US man won a medal in Alpine, when Phil Mahre took silver in the slalom at Lake Placid. But American women continued to win medals, with Jean Saubert winning a silver and a bronze in 1964, and in 1972, Barbara Cochran won gold in the slalom while Susie Corrock got the downhill bronze. In 1976 at Innsbruck, Cindy Nelson came through for a downhill bronze medal. American men continued on the medal podium in 1984, when Bill Johnson won the downhill, and Phil Mahre and his twin brother, Steve, went 1-2 in the slalom. Johnson’s downhill gold medal would be repeated by Tommy Moe at Lillehammer in 1994, who also won silver that year in the giant slalom. The 2000s have been the era of Bode Miller and Ted Ligety among the men, and Julia Mancuso and Lindsay Vonn among the women. Miller won two silver medals in 2002 and a full set of medals in 2010 and with five Alpine medals, is at the top of the US list. Ligety won the combined gold medal at Torino in 2006. Vonn won the women’s downhill at Vancouver in 2010, adding a bronze medal in Super G. She is surpassed in Olympic medals, however, by Mancuso, who won the giant slalom in 2006 and won two silver medals at Vancouver, in the combined and downhill. When JK was introduced at the opening reception, Editor there was an undercurrent of cocktail conversation that made it impossible to hear what M.C. Antil he was saying. However, unlike the previous speakers who tried to rise above the noise by shouting, JK spoke softly into the microphone. Project Management Anne Marie Hukriede - Sadler & Dorchester At first, no one listened, so he stopped. Then he started again, and this time rather than Lorie Sadler - Sadler & Dorchester speaking louder, he spoke even softer. The second time, those in front began to quiet Doug Craver - Knotice Ltd. down and started hushing those behind them. But still there was a lot of ambient noise. So JK stopped again. Then he started again. This time quiet swept across the room, to Editorial Design & Layout the point that soon only a handful of people in the back were still talking.

THE THIN LINE: Life on the Edge Skier Biographies BODE MILLER Bode Miller burst onto the World Cup scene as an 18-year-old in 1996 and first gained widespread recognition when he won two silver medals at the 2002 Winter Olympics in the Giant Slalom and Combined events. In addition, Street collected a total of four U.S. National titles during her illustrious career, despite being injured and away from ski racing for two years. DARON RAHLVES Daron Rahlves is the most decorated American Downhill and Super G skier in history. He has won 12 World Cup races and 28 World Cup podium finishes, seven U.S.

FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Alyeska Ski Club Board of Directors would like to congratulate all of our athletes that have participated in events and races over the past month. We have had athletes competing in IFSA, USSS and FIS events. Many of these events were key qualifiers to selections for outside regional and divisional competitions. We are very proud of all of our athletes that competed, and would like to congratulate those that were selected to represent the Alyeska Ski Club at these outside competitions. We would also like to give a big thank you to our ASC coaches. We are extremely lucky to have this exceptionally talented coaching staff. Our coaches work countless hours both on and off the snow to provide quality training opportunities and mentorship to our athletes. While not every athlete gets a position at the top of the podium, or may not finish a specific race or event, we need to keep the long term game in mind and be proud of the accomplishments they have made and the life skills they are learning. Congratulations again to our athletes, and good luck in the many competitions that ASC members will be attending in the upcoming two months. DEVOS Devos athletes have been busy improving their all mountain skiing skills. Coaches have enjoyed skiing with their groups designated by Alaska Mountain Ranges and Glaciers.

Zlata lisica. Doma v Mariboru. Čeravno sem sam zgolj rekreativni smučar in sem bil tekmovalno zapisan namiznemu tenisu, občudujem vse slovenske športnice in športnike, ki s trdim delom predano sledijo postavljenim ciljem, imajo najvišje ambicije in dosegajo izjemne rezultate v svetovnem merilu.
