NEUNZIG Department of Entomology, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina 27607 Vitula lugubrella was described by Ragonot in 1887. In 1901, Hamp son, who completed volume 8 of Ragonot's "Memoires sur Ie Lepi dopteres", included a slightly more extensive description [based in part on Moodna ostrinella (Clemens)] and a figure of the adult of this phycitine. Heinrich in 1956 desclibed and partially illustrated the male genitalia. The present paper gives information on the appearance of the last stage larva, pupa and habits of the larval stage. Last Stage Larva Color.2 Head yellowish brown; all groups of muscle attachments usually pale brown, indistinct; small brown patch at notch of postgenal region of head, with darker pigmentation extending dorsally along posterior margin of head capsule; hypostoma with brown to black markings; mandibles yellowish brown between articulations becoming dark brown to black distally and dark brown to black along lateral margins. Prothoracic shield yellowish brown to brown without any distinctly contrasting patches of color. l'respiracular plate yellowish brown to brown. Remainder of prothorax yellowish white, white or grayish white (translucent pink to pinkish white in living larva). Mesothorax and metathorax yellowish white, white or grayish white (living larva translucent pink to pinkish white; young last stage larva with internal organs readily evident, including dark purple gut and pale, whitish tracheae); mesothoracic ring pale brown to dark brown, usually darker along inner margin. Thoracic legs mostly yellowish brown. Abdomen similar to mesothorax and metathorax; caudal segments usually more yellowish (living larva with pink and dark internal color not as evident on caudal segments). -

FAMILY NITIDULIDAE (Sap beetles) J. McNamara One hundred species of Nitidulidae occur in Canada and Alaska. Members of this family are mostly saprophagous and mycetophagous. The majority of them live in decaying fruit, fermenting plant juice and in fungi, but some also live in flowers. Some species breed in the nests of bumblebees and others in carrion. The larvae of some species prey on scolytids; the larvae of other species are considered fungivorous and the larvae of Cateretinae live in seed capsules of various plants with the adults of these species feeding on the pollen and petals of the same plants or sometimes of others. Parsons (1943) published a revision of the Nearctic Nitidulidae and most western species can be keyed out also using Hatch (1962). Young Department of Entomology 445 Russell Labs University of Wisconsin-Madison Madison, WI 53706 Abstract: A survey of Wisconsin Nitidulidae and Kateretidae yielded 78 species through analysis of literature records, museum and private collections, and three years of field research (2000-2002). Twenty-seven species (35% of the Wisconsin fauna) represent new state records, having never been previously recorded from the state. Wisconsin distribution, along with relevant collecting techniques and natural history information, are summarized. The Wisconsin nitidulid and kateretid faunae are compared to reconstructed and updated faunal lists for Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and south-central Canada. -

Clinic update page 2 Below is the fruit insect report from the past two weeks: Berry Crops: Picnic/sap beetles Reports suggest that Japanese beetle pressure is finally starting to taper off for the page 2 year. This insect has been particularly destructive in the southern two thirds of the Spotted wing drosophila update state this year and growers should continue to monitor for additional beetles if high page 3 numbers have been observed the past few weeks. Cranberries: Cranberry degree-day map and Fall webworms have been popping up throughout the state the past few weeks. The update silken tents are quite obvious in southern portions of the state. Farther north, page 7 caterpillars are small, so thorough scouting can help prevent issues before significant damage occurs. Grapes: Wine and table grape developmental stages Several samples of apples with codling moth caterpillar damage have recently come page 8 in to the UW Insect Diagnostic Lab. These have typically been from backyard growers that had not been using monitoring traps for this pest. Tree Fruits: Silver leaf of apple Many stink bug samples have come into the page 12 UW Insect Diagnostic Lab recently. Profile Infestation with the Small Hive Beetle (Aethina Tumida)
Infestation with the Small Hive Beetle (Aethina tumida) Susceptible species The small hive beetle (Aethina tumida) is a pest of honey bees (Apis mellifera). In its larval stage the small hive beetle feeds on brood, pollen and honey and can thus damage the bee colony. Bumblebees and stingless bees can serve as alternative hosts; for solitary bees this is still unclear. The beetle does not represent a human health risk. Distribution area Originally, the small hive beetle occurs in Africa, south of the Sahara. By worldwide trade with honey bees, the beetle was introduced to America and Australia around the turn of the millenium, where it spread rapidly over large areas. Meanwhile, it has been reported at least once on all continents except the Antarctic. In spite of EU-wide import restrictions, Aethina tumida was detected in Calabria, Southern Italy, in September 2014; all attempts to eradicate have been unsuccessful. Causative agent The dark-brown to black small hive beetle belongs to the family of sap beetles (Nitidulidae). The adult beetle has about a third of the size of a honey bee (approx. 5mm long, 3mm wide). Fertilized females lay eggs in crevices inside the hive; they may also bite holes into cell cappings and walls to lay their eggs directly into the brood cells. The white to beige larvae emerge after one to three days. After another ten to fourteen days they reach the so-called wandering stage (approx. 10 mm long), leave the hive, and pupate in the soil. At warm summer temperatures the new generation emerges approx. -

CLINE (Louisiana State Arthropod Museum, Department of Entomology, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 10803, USA; email: [email protected]) The adventive sap beetles present in Hawai`i are all saprophagous, except for Cybocephalus nipponicus Endrödy-Younga, which is predatory. Species in the genus Carpophilus are the most commonly encountered and are considered nuisance pests around pineapple fields and canneries (Illingworth, 1929; Schmidt, 1935; Hinton, 1945). The remaining species are less frequently encountered and are not considered to be impor- tant pests. We report 2 new state records, 5 new island records, and 4 taxonomic changes for the adventive sap beetles in Hawai`i. With the exception of Stelidota chontalensis Sharp, all of the species reported are widely distributed outside Hawai`i. -

This preserve is only a few miles from both the Indiana and Michigan state borders. The great biodiversity of moths is reflected in the bog, fen, shrub swamp, and marsh communities bor dering the lake. A check list of species summarizes identified collections for 1988,1992,1995 and 1996 and includes the Hodges et al (1983) species num bers, the scientific name, and the numbers collected by different collecting methods.
