We present results for three expeditions conducted in Santander (municipalities of Cimitarra, El Carmen de Chucurí, and Santa Barbara), Colombia, during 2018 to collect bird voucher specimens, quantifying the costs of obtaining such material. Willy and I will always remember this tour as the first Banded Ground-Cuckoo tour. Getting our whole group to see such a dynamic and alluring rarity well was a real highlight for us, not to mention watching this mythic bird ourselves! The sound of that bill-clapping and the vision of that pulsating crest are etched in my memory. Classified as Endangered by BirdLife International, this army ant follower of the humid Choco forests occurs at very low population densities in an increasingly fragmented range, with an estimated population (based on total potential habitat left) of 600-1700 mature individuals remaining. We owe a debt of gratitude to Nicole and Wilo for making our seeing it possible--and we wish them success in increasing the size of their precious reserve. But there were countless additional highlights, some of which may loom equally large to most of you, for whom the riches of Andean Ecuador were all new. Looking through the long list of goodies, it's hard to pick a reasonable number of favorites; but here's a try (in more or less phylogenetic order), aided by your comments at our farewell dinner: Banded Ground-Cuckoo, with antswarm at Un Poco del Choco (by Rose Ann Rowlett) --watching that pair of Torrent Ducks along the rushing Sabanilla River while our first White-capped Dipper foraged

The vistas were amazing, the lodges were varied and delightful, the roads were interesting— thank goodness for Jaime, and the birds were fabulous. With the help of our superb guide Jose Illanes, the group managed to amass a total of 539 species of birds (plus 3 additional subspecies). Everyone helped in finding birds. You all were a delight to travel with, of course, helpful to the leaders and to each other. This was a real team effort. You folks are great. I have included your top birds, memorable experiences, location summaries, and the triplist in this document. I hope it brings back pleasant memories. Hope to see you all soon. Dave David M. GARY R. GRAVES Recent fieldwork in the isolated cordilleras of Peru by personnel of the Louisiana State University Museum of Zoology and other institutions has resulted in the discovery of several new high Andean birds (Blake and Hocking 1974, Weske and Terborgh 1974, Lowery and Tallman 1976, ONeill’ and Parker 1976). In October 1977 during a preliminary LSUMZ expedition to the Divisoria de Huancabamba, Department of Piura, Peru, I collected 2 specimens of a previously undescribed metaltail humming- bird. The specimens were stolen in Peru before they could be critically compared with museum material but field sketches of the birds showed sufficient differences from other species of Metallura to suggest they rep- resented an undescribed form. A LSUMZ field party returned to the region in 1978 and fortunately obtained 5 skins and 1 complete skeleton of this new form. In the genus Metallura, the related forms recisa, williami, primolinus, atrigularis, baroni, theresiae, eupogon, aeneocauda and malagae form a superspecies group (Fig. 1) of uncertain relationships (M. tyrianthina and M. phoebe (Black Metaltail) are locally sympatric with members of this group). Peters (1945) merged primolinus and atrigularis into M. williami and reduced baroni to an isolated subspecies of eupogon. Consequently Zimmer (1952) combined malugue and aeneocauda, but considered baroni to be specifically distinct and states (Zimmer 1952:lO): “The remaining three forms (baroni, theresiae, eupogon) are more divergent from the gen- eral pattern of the series, and it is probably best to give each of them individual specific status until specific relationships can be more positively demonstrated.” Wetmore (1970) considered the newly described recisa as a subspecies of primolinus, which he raised to specific level on the basis 1 THE WILSON BULLETIN - Vol.

EWING, SEBASTIAN K. HERZOG, ROSALIND BRYCE, KARL L. EVANS and AIDAN MACCORMICK Summary Bolivia holds one of the world’s richest avifaunas, but large areas remain biologically unexplored or unsurveyed. This study carried out the first ornithological inventory of one of the largest of these unexplored areas, the yungas forests of Cordilleras Cocapata and Mosetenes. A total of 339 bird species were recorded including 23 restricted-range, four Near-Threatened, two globally threatened, one new to Bolivia and one that may be new to science. The study extended the known altitudinal ranges of 62 species, 23 by at least 500 m, which represents a substantial increase in our knowledge of species distributions in the yungas, and illustrates how little is known about Bolivia’s avifauna. Species characteristic of, or unique to, three Endemic Bird Areas (EBAs) were found. En apariencia y construcción, el nido es similar a los descritos para otras especies de Scytalopus, siendo una estructura de forma globular que contenía dos huevos completamente blancos. El nido fue encontrado dentro de una cavidad subterránea. Esta es la primera descripción del nido y los huevos de S. spillmanni; ya son cuatro especies del género en Colombia para las cuales se conoce el nido. Palabras clave: Antioquia, biología reproductiva, Cordillera Occidental, Scytalopus spillmanni, Rhinocryptidae. ABSTRACT I describe the nest and eggs of the Spillmann’s Tapaculo (Scytalopus spillmanni), found in a moist mon- tane forest in the Western Andes of Colombia. In appearance and construction, the nest resembles others described for Scytalopus, being a globular structure with two white eggs inside. The nest was found in a subterranean cavity. This is the rst description of a nest and eggs of S. spillmanni; there are now four species of the genus in Colombia for which such descriptions have been published.
