German House

The Auschwitz trial initiated by attorney general Fritz Bauer took place from 1963 to 1965 in Frankfurt am Main.

The young Eva Bruhns is hired as a translator for the witness interviews. Her parents, owners of the restaurant Deutsches Haus, are strictly against her employment. Eva ignores their advice - too big is her curiosity. While listening to the shocking testimonies, she can't but think of her own family. Why don't her parents talk about the time during the war? And why doesn't her ancé Jürgen want to be confronted with the past?

Hailing from scriptwriting, Annette Hess knows how to plot and how to develop strong characters. No matter how marginal, each one poignantly illustrates post-war Germany and the intricate, complex structure that is family. How we all wander the narrow line that runs between acceptance and denial. "This novel comes just at the right time." Iris Berben

Life happens when you least expect it…As every Monday, eccentric private detective Frankie spends his evening drinking his usual rum and coke in his local bar and before he knows it, he is knee-deep his most absurd case to date.

Mauke, president of Germany’s railway company, is blackmailed by an anonymous caller. The only clue to his identity: he called from a nightclub while Madonna's "White Heat" was played in the background.

Together with his sidekick, long-term philosophy student Jens, Frankie combs through the West German nightlife of the 80ties. The fact that no DJ seems to have ever played "White Heat" turns out to be the least of his problems. Industrial espionage, double agents, betrayal and deception – during the hot summer of 1988, Frankie is on a mad trip, in which the boundaries between delusion and reality increasingly blur.

Witty and the good kind of weird, this literary debut sits somewhere between Jonathan Ames’ Bored to Death and Thomas Bernhard. It is a trip down memory lane as much as it is an exploration of a country that does no longer exist. The Meaning of Thought

From populist propaganda against knowledge (a.k.a. fake news), the ideological fantasies associated with the digital revolution to the advances of A.I. research - human thought is under attack. With his third book, philosopher Markus Gabriel concludes his trilogy on the philosophical movement called New Realism. In The Meaning of Thought he deals with one of the major topics, perhaps the true main concept of philosophy: human thought. Gabriel claims that our human thinking is part of our senses and is subsequently tied to its biological conditions. We are part of the animal kingdom. Our thinking is not a form of data processing, but rather the linking of images and imaginary ideas, which we process in dierent sensory modalities. Our time frame expands far beyond the present moment, as our ideas and beliefs stretch far beyond the here and now. We are living beings and in our life stories the whole evolution is built in. Our thinking is a complex structure that is not easily replicated - especially not by technology. In a certain sense, you could even call it a form of articial intelligence.

With his usual verve and curiosity, he combines classic theory with pop culture and sets the stage for his bold and compelling claims. He oers new insight into a complex and very timely subject.

His previous books have been translated into 14 languages. “Markus Gabriel is the wunderkind of speculative thinking.” Neue Zürcher Zeitung

Touch

"With touch, our senses open up. We let memories in that have been blocked for a long time, thereby countering stress and its negative eects. It has been scientically proven that chronic stress is a cause of depression. The use of specially selected, gentle, peaceful massage techniques can help people with depression, who not only suer from mood disorders but also disorders and conditions of the body, which are manifested in various symptoms such as cold limbs, tense muscles, pains or sexual problems."

Touch is one of the most basic human needs. A lack of touch has been proven to cause illness for all ages. Touch can be a useful measure in treatments for physical as well as psychological conditions.

The skin is the organ that is closely tied to our self-condence and our identity. It has an intelligence on its own. How do skin and brain communicate? How does a gentle touch generate a sense of well-being? In this book, the authors explain the extent to which touch is part of our biological makeup. How it is crucial for the maintenance of our health and how it works as an elixir of life to mobilise our self- healing powers.

This book is not only a plea for more touch in a non-contact world, but rather an incentive to develop a new body consciousness and with it experience more joie de vivre and energy.

f 8 Foreign Rights Frankfurt Book Fair 2018 The End of Stupid Work

To nally be motivated about work again and to really achieve something. That’s what lots of frustrated employees dream of, and that’s why the innovative work culture of start-ups fascinates them so much. The good news: their dream can become reality, without them having to set up their own business.

In his new book, Felix Plötz shows how to establish the start- up spirit in traditional companies, which working models there are and which model is best suited to whom – from top management to trainees. An engaging manifesto for a new, fresh working culture, as well as a practical guide for individuals: for self-determined, meaningful jobs in established companies.

Felix Plötz practices what he preaches. He is an industrial engineer, entrepreneur, author and a speaker. Plötz founded his rst startup while working at a big corporation. His books on motivation and freelancing have all been bestsellers. In 2015, he co-founded a publishing startup company called Plötz & Betzholz. © Heiner Hänsel

Icy friends

Penguins are considered funny and cute, but the birds with the Charlie Chaplin gait are so much more than that. They are highly individual creatures and they are hardly ever alone. They lead a modern family life - with penguin fathers taking half a year parental leave. They live in extreme weather conditions and keep every record in deep diving and swimming. Yet, the masters of adaptation are exposed to great dangers: global warming, oil pollution and overshing of the oceans have a direct impact on their lives.

Klemens Pütz explains why penguins play a key role in our ecosystem. Why Patagonian squid on our plates aects the decline of the rock penguins in the Falkland Islands.

A book about a fascinating bird family that we care about.

Klemens Pütz holds a doctorate in marine biology and has been researching the life of penguins for over thirty years. In 2004, he co-founded the © privat Antarctic Research Trust that acquired several small, pristine islands, part of the Falklands, to preserve the habitat for its animal inhabitants. Dunja Batarilo is a freelance journalist and author. She writes reports and portraits u.a. for DIE ZEIT, brandeins, taz and DER SPIEGEL.

Page 19 As from 25.09.2018 Foreign Rights Frankfurt Book Fair 2018 Where does freedom of opinion end – where does censorship begin?

Beware: Censorship!

Censorship is the rallying cry of the moment. A poem is removed from a building façade? Censorship! A painting is removed from a museum? Censorship! A speaker is no longer welcome to give a talk at a university? Censorship! But is that really what it is? Traditional censorship, as still enforced by the state in dictatorships and autocracies, has been overcome in the modern constitutional state. However, a highly emotional debate about freedom of opinion has erupted in Germany. The literary scientist Nikola Roßbach analyses the controversial discussion about the expressible and reveals its underlying mechanisms. She promotes a censorship debate, which goes beyond polemics and eect-seeking extreme positions. The open democratic discourse is no longer threatened by the state, yet the danger comes from the centre of society. Who are the new enemies of diversity of opinion? And how should we respond to them?

Nikola Roßbach is Professor for Modern German Literature in Kassel and has been working for many years on the control and standardization of literary knowledge. Since 2016, she has focused more intensively on censorship in research and teaching. She was a scientic partner in the monumental art project Parthenon of Books by Marta © Pia Malmus Minujín (documenta 14).
