Theatre enthusiasts in cities and towns across the country sought to raise the standards of theatrical productions by creating quality volunteer-driven theatre companies that not only entertained, but also became an integral part of the local community. This paper focuses on two such groups in the city of Nashville, Tennessee: the Little Theatre Guild of Nashville (later the Nashville Little Theatre) and the Nashville Community Playhouse. Both groups shared ties to the national movement and showed a dedication for producing the most current and relevant plays of the day. On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the St. James Theater (originally Erlanger Theater) and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 70). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty witnesses spoke or had statements read into the record in favor of designation. One witness spoke in opposition to designation. The owner, with his representatives, appeared at the hearing, and indicated that he had not formulated an opinion regarding designation. The Commission has received many letters and other expressions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The St. James (built as the Erlanger) Theater survives today as one of the historic playhouses that symbolize American theater for both New York and the nation. Built in 1926-27, the St. James was designed by the prominent firm of Warren & Wetmore as the last Broadway theater erected for Abraham Erlanger. Abraham Erlanger had been a principal in the infamous Klaw & Erlanger Theatrical Syndicate, which had dominated the American theater industry for several decades on either side of the turn of the century. After the break-up of the Syndicate, Klaw and Erlanger went their separate ways, and each built theaters named for themselves.

It is too personal a story to interest outsiders. To the members of my own generation I make no ex­ cuse for it. We have grown old enough to learn that our forebears still live on in us; that we owe most of our qual­ ities, aptitudes and weaknesses to them as truly as we do the color of our eyes or the shapes of our noses. They molded our characters by tradition and example. They speak to us daily from the fields they tilled, the shops, homes and memorials they built and the trees tLey planted. But to the youngsters, now so eagerly peering forward into the future that they are impatient of things past, I shall also give this book. Some day when they come to realize that they too are only ancestors, leading their children by the hand, as their parents led them, into the brief spotlight we call life, and then bidding them good-bye as these children will ag~in lead and bid good-bye to others, they may care to glance back at a few of the folk who marched before in the same endless procession. One of my daughters came back from school the other day full of scorn for history because it was only about "old dead people fighting." I should agree, my dear, if by V "fighting" you mean merely military battles, most of which have left no durable result and only clogged the march of human progress.

During his formative years Steven delighted in hearing soloists in churches and theatres, and at the age of six decided to become a singer. He received much of his early training as a member of his church choir and with several local glee clubs. Steven Kennedy attended Moundsville High School in West Virginia where he developed an extraordinary voice. After high school he enrolled in the Pittsburgh Musical Institute in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to pursue studies in piano and voice. Subsequently he attended the famed Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York for post-graduate work in voice study. While attending Eastman, Kennedy appeared as a soloist with the Rochester Philharmonic, the Wheeling Symphony, and the San Bernadino Symphony. Kennedy’s first professional performances were with a Gilbert and Sullivan Company where he sang stellar roles in “The Pirates of Penzance” and “Iolante.” After performing in New York with the Winthrop Ames Sullivan Company, he went to Europe to further his studies in voice and language.

For forty years, actress Katharine Cornell and her husband, director Guthrie McClintic, sustained one of the most celebrated and successful partnerships in the American theater. McClintic first directed Cornell in 1925 when she starred as Iris March in Michael Arlen's The Green Hat. They went on to collaborate on a total of twenty-eight productions, most of which they presented under their own management. They achieved their greatest success in 1931 when, under McClintic's direction, Cornell portrayed Elizabeth Barrett in Rudolph Besier's The Barretts of Wimpole Street. Even in theatrical circles, little was known about Cornell's and McClintic's sexual lives beyond the general impression that both were gay. However, it seems clear that their relationship was a nonsexual one, at least after the first few years, and that both partners consistently pursued same-sex attachments. Nevertheless, McClintic and Cornell remained a devoted couple from their marriage in 1921 until McClintic's death in 1961. Cornell was born on February 16, 1893, in Berlin, Germany, where her father Peter, a doctor, was completing postgraduate work in surgery. She grew up in Buffalo, New York, where, a few years after returning to the United States, Peter Cornell became part owner and manager of the Star Theater. Although Cornell was close to her father, her mother Alice suffered from depression and alcoholism, and the young girl seems to have endured a somewhat lonely and isolated childhood.

Herts, the Booth was one of a pair with the Shubert and was among the numerous theaters constructed by the Shuberts, one of the most active and influential families in American theater history. On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Little Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 42). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty witnesses spoke in favor of designation. Designed by Ingalls & Hoffman and built in 1912, the Little Theater's neo­ Colonial styling lent an air of charm and mild eccentricity to a Broadway then accustomed to a more formal Classical or Beaux-Arts design. Commissioned by Winthrop Ames, an independently weal thy producer with an architectural background and unusual ideas about drama, the Little Theater was designed to house the new, detailed type of drama called "intimate theater." Ames had observed and listened to intimate drama in the United States and particularly in Europe where he traveled extensively; he had seen the architectural prototypes, such as London's Little Theater and Berlin's Chamber Theater, for what he envisioned would be his own Broadway showcase for this alternative theater.
