A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

August 2015 Dear Students:

Welcome back to another school year. We expect each student to be successful at Riverview East Academy. Successful people are described as being organized and well planned. Since our goal is have every student at Riverview achieve the highest caliber of education possible, we recognize the importance of the student and family role in this goal. This year we are asking you to use a planner on a daily basis to help with organization and planning. The planner is something that you should use on a daily basis for several reasons. The first reason is that you should use this planner to record any assignments that you have to do in your classes. This will help you to be organized and keep track of current and future assignments. The second reason you will use this planner is to track any reminders that you need to have handy. These may include reminders about books you need to remember for certain classes or even reminders about forms that you may need to get signed. The third reason the planner is important is the staff has put together school rules and policies that provide information to parents in a one place instead of getting many packets of papers. All of the information about Riverview will be in the planner. Of course, as the school year goes on, there may be information that changes, but for the most part, we have tried to make all of the information accessible in one place. The final reason the planner will be able to help your parents and teachers communicate regularly by writing in the planner, checking the planner, and asking for feedback. We believe that these reasons make the planner essential for you to use. You will also need their planner in order to be excused from the classroom. It will operate as a pass as you move outside of your classroom when you are not escorted by your teacher. You need to have your planner with you at all times. It is important that you treat the planner as carefully as you treat your cell phone or other prized possession. If you lose your planner, you will be responsible for paying a fee of $5.00 for a replacement, and you may have limited access outside the classroom as you will not have a pass to be out of the classroom. It is important that you have your planner to be a successful student. Teachers will be reviewing the rules and policies with you so that you could have a successful year. Please take every advantage that Riverview East has to offer and enjoy your 2015-2016 school year.

Sincerely yours, Charlene Myers Principal MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of Riverview East Academy is to provide a safe environment that promotes respect, and motivates students to learn and act responsibly. We will establish high standards of learning that we expect all students to achieve by capitalizing on their individual strengths. We will prepare students by creating and delivering a rigorous and comprehensive curriculum. The elementary students will participate in wellness activities, while the high school students will be prepared to enter the healthcare workforce and/or post-secondary healthcare education. We believe education is the shared responsibility of the student, home, school and community.

THE HISTORY OF RIVERVIEW EAST ACADEMY

Riverview East Academy was established in 2005. It merged two K-6 schools, Linwood Academy and McKinley Elementary into one school, spanning preschool-12th grade. This Community Learning Center was established so that our students could go to one school through all 13 years at one location. The hope was to cut the dropout rate of our students when they left the community to go to high school. Riverview East has met that goal, with many graduating students having completed their journey starting either at Linwood or McKinley, and on through Riverview East.

Assignment of bus stops is based on the legal residence of the student, which is provided to the school. When a family moves, it is critical that the new address be provided to the child's school prior to the move because a different stop location may be assigned based on the new address. The Pupil Transportation Branch makes every effort to place bus stops between one-fourth (1/4) and one-half mile (1/2) apart.

How to Calculate Your GPA (Grade Point Average)

Your Grade Point Average is a calculation of your grades and credits combined. A GPA can be calculated for the semester and is called a Semester GPA or for the entire length of your high school career, which is called the Cumulative Grade Point Average. Many decisions are made from your grade point average such as admission into college, scholarship approval, and participation in extra-curricular activities. With so much riding on this number, it is crucial that you learn how to calculate it for yourself. For weighted GPA, courses are separated into two categories – Weighted and included in weighted GPA or unweighted but included in weighted GPA. All core academic courses (math, science, English, social studies, and foreign language) including courses that are related to a core academic are included in weighted GPA. Each letter grade you receive can be equated to a point value depending on the level of the course (Regular, AA, or AP) as indicated in this chart. Grade point averages can be weighted or unweighted. An unweighted GPA is calculated using the point value for the Regular level courses—even if you are taking honors or AP courses. Some colleges/scholarships request your unweighted GPA. However, others will take above. into account your weighted GPA, which is calculated using the Honors and AP point values as indicated in the chart

Try it out! Calculate the weighted and unweighted GPA by filling in the chart below: Mark #Reg. Grade Point # AA Grade #AP Grade Grade Point Point Point Earned A X 4 + X 5 + X 6 + =

B X 3 + X 3.75 + X 4.5 + =

C X 2 + X 2.5 + X 3 + =

D X 1 + X 1.25 + X 1.5 + =

F X 0 + X 0. + X 0 + = Total Grade Points Earned Divided By / Number of Classes

RIVERVIEW EAST ACADEMY SCHOOL SONG We Climb and Soar

Written by Barbra James There’s a place along the river where dreams are made. There’s room to grow in the dawning of each of day. With encouragement to be, to accomplish anything So we can climb, so much higher till we soar.

There’s a place along the river where life begins. Any goal can be achieved. The victory’s ours to win. Opportunity awaits new challenges to take. So we can climb, so much higher till we soar.

High above the clouds, the River Hawks soar. Reaching higher heights, never reached before.

Because of you, Riverview There’s room to be just what we choose.

Gold and blue, we will be true.

Rise to the test to be our best So we can climb, so much higher till we soar. So we can climb, so much higher till we soar.

Yes, we will climb, so much higher till we soar.
