Since 2018, Brussels Gallery Weekend has developed its own exhibition, aiming to highlight young artists from Brussels which are not yet represented by galleries. ‘Generation Brussels’ brings together a range of artists living and working in Brussels, whether they’re art school students, recent graduates, up and coming artists, or those with a bit more experience. This year, ‘Generation Brussels’ reinvents itself by connecting private and public spaces. For this new edition, the BGW is pleased to welcome Evelyn Simons, a young Belgian curator living in Brussels. Generation Brussels 2020 brings together a selection of emerging artists, art school students, young artists recently graduated from art schools, and others a little more experienced, living and working in Brussels. This year, Generation Brussels reinvents itself and proposes a journey through the city, combining indoor and public space!

Evelyn Simons

For 2020 we have chosen to collaborate with Belgian curator Evelyn Simons. Her Generation experience and reputation both in Belgium and abroad, as well as her insight in the emerging Brussels arts scene, will amplify this reconfigured edition of Generation Brussels. Challenged by unprecedented circumstances, the exhibition abandons its regular home, and will permeate the city as an artistic itinerary. This approach hints at Driftwood, or how we surfaced through currents, an exhibition she curated for Fondazione Prada in Athens as sequence of solo-presentations taking over vacant shopfronts, lively café’s and urban parkings in the neighbourhood of Exarcheia. These projects follow Evelyn’s interest in mediating contemporary art in public space as well as in peripheral contexts Brussels - further explored through her activities with Horst Arts & Music (on the military terrain of Asiat in Vilvoorde), an the soon to be launched Kunsthal Ter Rijst (co-directed with Isabel Van Bos in a renovated neo-classical Castle in the Pajottenland, in the countryside South-West of Brussels). Evelyn and the artists participating in Generation Brussels want to bring their art close to the unassuming wanderers that inhabit this city, as a way to spark imagination, to stir contemplation or to ignite instinctive wonderment with those who weren’t looking for it.

Elise Peroi

On view: Galerie Louise, Boulevard de Waterloo 34 Waterloolaan, 1000 Brussels Elise Peroi (b. 1990, Nantes) is a visual artist, weaver and performer, whose practice is informed by a will to reconcile and blur rigid categorisations between craftsmanship, performance and the visual arts in general. Her works are often the result of physical performances with textile, in which ancestral weaving techniques appear like forms of contemporary dance, expressing a quest for unison between the body of the artist and the works she is creating. This encompassing approach often brings her to collaborate with choreographers and musicians, as a way to install a temporal though timeless reality. She depicts opulent, but tranquil landscapes in order to express a poetic encounter between mankind and nature, made apparent through the motif of the garden.

Héloïse Rival

On view: Galerie Louise, Boulevard de Waterloo 34 Waterloolaan, 1000 Brussels Héloïse Rival (born 1990, Paris) studied at ENSAD (Strasbourg) from 2010 to 2011, and continued her studies at La Cambre in Brussels, where she obtained her degree in graphics in 2017. Her practice initially focused on screen printing, distorting and manipulating data. Recently she decided to focus exclusively on ceramics, investigating the bas-relief as a functional object as well as a carrier of narratives. Rival combines mythological scenes with biblical stories and botanical motifs into an imaginative and vivid visual language. Her practice blurs the lines between art and applied crafts. Educational Badi Rezzak

On view: Rue de la régence 55 Regentschapsstraat, 1000 Brussel Badi Rezzak (born in 1990 in France) lives and works in Brussels. He began his career as an artist at the Villa Arson school of Nice where he obtained his DNAP, a national diploma in plastic arts. There he will develop his taste for sculpture and painting. He continued his studies in Brussels and Social at the ERG school (school of graphic research) where he met Christophe Wavelet, critic and curator, as well as Joelle Tuerlinckx, who thaught him more about performance until 2018. Today his work is mainly based around the culture of sports. In a process of archiving, he collects gestures, movements, attitudes, motives in forms of sculpture, painting, performative proposition.

Siemen Van Gaubergen

On view: Taschen, Rue Lebeau 59 Lebeaustraat, 1000 Bruxelles “The first dino bone, was not seen as a dino bone, but just as a very big bone.” - Siemen Van Gaubergen In his practice, Siemen Van Gaubergen investigates contemporary visual culture and the way in which we understand images. Narratives of all kind form the multilayered background against which his images take shape. In the creation of his work, he additionally makes use of existing or newly created photographs, videostills, instruction sheets, language and graphic signs. The result is often complex, and demands to be viewed and reviewed, deciphered. Brussels Gallery Weekend Info & Access 60 Brussels Gallery Weekend Info & Access 61
