Palaeoclimate, Glacier and Treeline Reconstruction Based On
Zurich Open Repository and Archive University of Zurich Main Library Strickhofstrasse 39 CH-8057 Zurich www.zora.uzh.ch Year: 2018 Palaeoclimate, glacier and treeline reconstruction based on geomorphic evidences in the Mongun-Taiga massif (south-eastern Russian Altai) during the Late Pleistocene and Holocene Ganyushkin, Dmitry ; Chistyakov, Kirill ; Volkov, Ilya ; Bantcev, Dmitry ; Kunaeva, Elena ; Brandová, Dagmar ; Raab, Gerald ; Christl, Marcus ; Egli, Markus Abstract: Little is known about the extent of glaciers and dynamics of the landscape in south-eastern Russian Altai. The effects of climate-induced fluctuations of the glaciers and the upper treeline of the Mongun-Taiga mountain massif were, therefore, reconstructed on the basis of in-situ, multiannual observations, geomorphic mapping, radiocarbon and surface exposure dating, relative dating (such as Schmidthammer and weathering rind) techniques and palaeoclimate-modelling. During the maximal advance of the glaciers, their area was 26-times larger than now and the equilibrium line of altitude (ELA) was about 800m lower. Assuming that the maximum glacier extent took place during MIS 4, then the average summer temperatures were 2.7℃ cooler than today and the amount of precipitation 2.1 times higher. Buried wood trunks by a glacier gave ages between 60 and 28 cal ka BP and were found 600-700m higher than the present upper treeline. This evidences a distinctly elevated treeline during MIS 3a and c. With a correction for tectonics we reconstructed the summer warming to have been between 2.1 and 3.0℃. During MIS 3c, the glaciated area was reduced to less than 0.5 km² with an increase of the ELA of 310-470m higher than today. -

The Blighted Starfruit: Poems and Translations
ABSTRACT Title of Document: THE BLIGHTED STARFRUIT: POEMS AND TRANSLATIONS Gerald M. Maa, MFA, 2008 Directed By: Associate Professor Joshua Weiner Department of English Starting and ending with travel, The Blighted Starfruit collects the poems of a writer working through his apprenticeship. The writer explores the limits of prosody and literary precursors in search of a manner and company his voice can press up against. The initial section collects the manuscript’s shorter lyric poems, culminating in a series, ‘Enigma Variations,’ unified by form. The following section consists of translations from Haizi. The collection ends with ‘Riverwolf,’ a piece that renders the excursive nature of this poet’s mind into the form of a long poem. If the writer’s manner can be characterized around the notion of travel, it is a travel that defines itself as a middle state where departure and arrival co-exist. The work at hand displays a student’s efforts to come into a particular sensibility by trying to figure his self—body, mind, and experience—within the landscape of whom he’s read. THE BLIGHTED STARFRUIT: POEMS AND TRANSLATIONS By Gerald M. Maa Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts 2008 Advisory Committee: Associate Professor Joshua Weiner, Chair Professor Michael Collier Professor Stanley Plumly © Copyright by Gerald M. Maa MFA He knocks at all doors, strays and roams, Nay, hath not so much wit as some stones have, Which in the darkest nights point to their homes, By some hid sense their Maker gave; Man is the shuttle, to whose winding quest And passage through these looms God order’d motion, but ordain’d no rest. -

The massif is the largest glacierized area of Altai. The purposes of this study were to provide a full description of the scale and structure of the modern glacierized area of the Tavan Bogd massif, to reconstruct the glaciers of the Little Ice Age (LIA), to estimate the extent of the glaciers in 1968, and to determine the main glacial trends, and their causes, from the peak of the LIA. -
Climate Variability in the Northern and Southern Altai Mountains During The
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Climate variability in the northern and southern Altai Mountains during the past 50 years Received: 30 August 2017 Dongliang Zhang1,2, Yunpeng Yang1,2 & Bo Lan3 Accepted: 8 February 2018 The Holocene drying trend in the northern Altai Mountains and the wetting trend in the southern Altai Published: xx xx xxxx Mountains inferred from the paleoclimatic studies indicated it is needed to understand the modern climatic characters in this region. However, a detailed analysis of modern climate variations in the northern and southern Altai Mountains is lacking. Here, we investigate the monthly temperature and monthly precipitation data from seventeen meteorological stations during 1966–2015 in the northern and southern Altai. The result shows that temperature increases signifcantly in the northern (0.42 °C/10 yr) and in the southern (0.54 °C/10 yr). The precipitation decreases insignifcantly (−1.41 mm/10 yr) in the northern, whereas it increases signifcantly (8.89 mm/10 yr) in the southern. The out-of-phase relationship of precipitation changes is also recorded at diferent time-scales (i.e., season, year, multi-decades, centennial and millennial scales), indicating the Altai Mountains are an important climatic boundary. Based on the analysis of modern atmosphere circulation, the decreased precipitation in the northern corresponds to the decreasing contribution of ‘Northern meridional and Stationary anticyclone’ and ‘Northern meridional and East zonal’ circulation and the increased precipitation in the southern are associated with the increasing contribution of ‘West zonal and Southern meridional’ circulation. Te Altai Mountains, one of the most prominent mountain ranges in Central Asia (Fig.
