  • Torah Texts Describing the Revelation at Mt. Sinai-Horeb Emphasize The
Paradox on the Holy Mountain By Steven Dunn, Ph.D. © 2018 Torah texts describing the revelation at Mt. Sinai-Horeb emphasize the presence of God in sounds (lwq) of thunder, accompanied by blasts of the Shofar, with fire and dark clouds (Exod 19:16-25; 20:18-21; Deut 4:11-12; 5:22-24). These dramatic, awe-inspiring theophanies re- veal divine power and holy danger associated with proximity to divine presence. In contrast, Elijah’s encounter with God on Mt. Horeb in 1 Kings 19:11-12, begins with a similar audible, vis- ual drama of strong, violent winds, an earthquake and fire—none of which manifest divine presence. Rather, it is hqd hmmd lwq, “a voice of thin silence” (v. 12) which manifests God, causing Elijah to hide his face in his cloak, lest he “see” divine presence (and presumably die).1 Revelation in external phenomena present a type of kataphatic experience, while revelation in silence presents a more apophatic, mystical experience.2 Traditional Jewish and Christian mystical traditions point to divine silence and darkness as the highest form of revelatory experience. This paper explores the contrasting theophanies experienced by Moses and the Israelites at Sinai and Elijah’s encounter in silence on Horeb, how they use symbolic imagery to convey transcendent spiritual realities, and speculate whether 1 Kings 19:11-12 represents a “higher” form of revela- tory encounter. Moses and Israel on Sinai: Three months after their escape from Egypt, Moses leads the Israelites into the wilderness of Sinai where they pitch camp at the base of Mt.

THE DOCTRINE OF SIN INTRODUCTION Man calls it an accident; God calls it an abomination. Man calls it a blunder; God calls it a blight. Man calls it a defect; God calls it a disease. Man calls it a chance; God calls it a choice. Man calls it an error; God calls it an enmity. Man calls it a fascination; God calls it a fatality. Man calls it an infirmity; God calls it an iniquity. Man calls it a luxury; God calls it a leprosy. Man calls it a liberty; God calls it lawlessness. Man calls it a trifle; God calls it a tragedy. Man calls it a mistake; God calls it a madness. Man calls it a weakness; God calls it a willfulness. What is this mysterious thing, so downplayed and on occasion actually denied by man, but utterly denounced by God? By actual count it is referred to over 700 times in the Word of God.

  • The Revelation at Sinai in Bible and Midrash Everett Fox
THE JEWISH EDUCATOR The Revelation at Sinai in Bible and Midrash Everett Fox lthough it probably started out as a harvest festival, Shavuot in Jewish tradition has come to commemorate the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. This event, which is traditionally viewed as a central moment in the history and consciousness of the Jewish people, stands at the midpoint of a classic structuring of Judaism: Creation-Revelation-Redemption. Although like Aother religious systems, Judaism understands time as cyclical — built on the rhythms of the seasons and repeating key events in the biblical story — it also introduced a linear concept, in which human history moves from a meaningful creation to the revelation of God’s word, with the goal of the redemption of both the Jewish people and all of humankind. History, in this view, is always moving forward, always forging a path toward resolution of the troubles of this world, especially Exile. So, Shavuot celebrates one of the most important steps on the Jewish journey. But the Sinai event is portrayed in different ways depending on the source. The Torah has two takes (and vocabulary) on this moment, one in Exodus and one in Deuteronomy. As for the rest of the Bible, Sinai barely appears again, which is quite surprising. Most strikingly, the Rabbis, through Midrash, elevated the revelation in the desert to very high status, spending a good deal of time and effort in expounding on details and elaborating on some of the themes they find there. Let’s look at the texts themselves. The first, very full description of the Sinai revelation appears in Exodus 19-20: Chapter 19: 1.

  • God's Picture Album of His Only Begotten
Bible Study - God’s Picture Album of His Only Begotten Son in Exodus God’s Picture Album of His Only Begotten Son in Exodus - (Exodus 2:11-22, Deuteronomy 18:15- 18; 5:1-6) - We are not understanding the Old Testament (Or the New) if we do not see Jesus Christ everywhere on every page. Some of these pictures of Jesus Christ are brought to us by the Holy Spirit through “Word Pictures” or “Types”. Only God has the foresight to produce types, men do not have this ability without the inspiration of God. Thank God He has preserved these down thru the centuries so we can learn about Jesus Christ. The Bible is truly God’s Picture Album of His only begotten Son. In Exodus 2:10 we’re introduced to Moses who is mentioned 813 times in other parts of the Bible. A tremendous picture materializes in the remainder of the chapter with Moses leaving his place comfort, ease, and preeminence in the palace to present himself to his brethren as their appointed deliverer. Here he is rejected by his brethren and turns to the Gentiles at which time he takes a Gentile bride. In the ensuing chapters he would return to those brethren and be received in his second appearance and deliver the nation of Israel from their bondage. It can be easily seen in all of this that Moses is a tremendous picture of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit actually spells this Bibletype out for us in Deuteronomy 18:15-18. The ministries of Jesus Christ and Moses are paralleled in the New Testament in places like John 5:45-47 and Hebrews 3:1-6.

Jiří Moskala Introduction his study 1 focuses on the difficult passage of Isa 65:17–25 which is often applied by conservative evangelical authors to the description T of the eschatological New Heavens and New Earth, and who claim that Isaiah portrayed it in the limited language of his time. 2 “As 1 This essay is dedicated to my friend and colleague Dr. Richard M.
