Work is continuing on her $10billion Roy Hill project in Western Australia, although it has been hit by doubts over its short-term viability given falling commodity prices and safety issues. Rinehart is pressing ahead and expects the first shipment late in 2015. Most of her wealth comes from huge royalty cheques from Rio Tinto, which mines vast swaths of tenements pegged by Rinehart’s late father, Lang Hancock, in the 1950s and 1960s. Extract from Hansard [ASSEMBLY - Tuesday, 29 August 2006] p5328b-5329a Mr Tony O'Gorman; Mrs Michelle Roberts ENTERTAINMENT AND SPORTS VENUE 549. Mr A.P. O’GORMAN to the Minister for Housing and Works: Can the minister advise of the Carpenter government’s plans to ensure that Western Australia has an entertainment and sports venue that will attract world-class events? Mrs M.H. ROBERTS replied: I thank the member for Joondalup for the question. On Sunday the Premier and I announced the new name, Perth Arena, and the final design for Western Australia’s new state-of-the-art indoor sport and entertainment venue. The $250 million indoor arena has been improved. It will now include 40 suites, with a total of more than 500 corporate seats. There will be additional break-out spaces, including an up-market club lounge. The capacity and flexibility of the roof structure has also been increased to provide for additional rigging equipment and lighting and to allow bigger and more ambitious events to be held. The acoustic treatments are also being enhanced. Significantly, these enhancements will provide an opportunity for increased revenue for the arena, which will ensure that it remains viable in the long term. The government has also committed to a 680-bay car park at a cost of $70 million over the railway behind the arena. Apart from providing much-needed parking in the area, it will also provide a very good pedestrian link with Northbridge. In fact, Perth Arena patrons and others will be able to step onto an escalator, walk through a modern arcade and emerge in Roe Street, Northbridge.

MEDIA RELEASE PERTH LYNX TO ENTER NEXT PHASE OF GROWTH The Perth Wildcats and Basketball WA wish to announce that the two organisations have come to an arrangement to transfer the Licence for the Perth Lynx back to Basketball WA for the 2020/21 season so as to commence the next phase of the redevelopment of the women’s pathway program. Five years ago Jack Bendat took ownership of the Perth Lynx to assist the women’s game to become more professional and sustainable at the national level and build a product and program that can provide for the aspirations of young female basketballers across the state to compete at the national level. Jack’s vision has been achieved as the team has gone from strength to strength playing off in four finals series, including a grand final appearance in its first year. Basketball WA can now take a professional program and entrench it in the community basketball fabric to ensure its long term success. BWA CEO Rob Clement said “Basketball has a lot to thank Jack Bendat for and his investment and leadership in our Perth Lynx program has been exemplary, we now look to embrace our broader basketball community to consolidate the work done by Mr Bendat and the Perth Wildcats team to ensure the teams long term success and viability, we thank Mr Bendat for his leadership and contribution to the sport.” Basketball WA is now looking towards the 2020/21 season and working with a range of stakeholders to discuss the future structure of the program and look forward to making some announcements soon.

PROFESSIONAL SPORT AND MARKET RESTRICTIONS: IS THE PLAYER POINTS SYSTEM IN THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BASKETBALL LEAGUE AN UNFAIR RESTRAINT OF TRADE? JACOB HOLMES∗ This article analyses the Australian National Basketball League’s ‘Player Points System’ to ascertain the real impact of the system on the sport, clubs and athletes. It argues that the system works against the best interests of the sport and is an unreasonable restraint on the trade of the athletes. Ultimately, this article calls for the Player Points System to be abandoned and replaced by a more effective system such as the Restricted Free Agency labour market restraint model that is used in the Australian Football League and American National Basketball Association. It concludes that this system could more adequately promote the best interests of the National Basketball League and the players without constituting an unreasonable restraint of trade.
