KRUCKEBERG Department of Botany, KB-15 University of Washington Seattle, Washington 98195 ABSTRAcr "Islands" ofdiscontinuity in the distribution ofplants are common in mainland (continental) regions. Such discontinuities should be amenable to testing the tenets of MacArthur and Wilson's island biogeography theory. Mainland gaps are often the result of discontinuities in various geological attributes-the geoedaphic syndrome of topography, lithology and soils. To discover ifgeoedaphically caused patterns of isolation are congruent with island biogeography theory, the effects of topographic discontinuity on plant distributions are examined first. Then a similar inspection is made of discon tinuities in parent materials and soils. Parallels as well as differences are detected, indicating that island biogeography theory may be applied to mainland discontinuities, but with certain reservations. Key words: acid (sterile) soils, edaphic islands, endemism, geoedaphics, granite outcrops, island bio- geography, mainland islands, serpentine, speciation, topographic islands, ultramafic, vas cular plants, vernal pools. INTRODUCTION "Insularity is ... a universal feature of biogeography"-MacArthur and Wilson ( 196 7) Do topographic and edaphic islands in a "sea" of mainland normal environ ments fit the model for oceanic islands? There is good reason to think so, both from classic and recent biogeographic studies.

  • An Analysis of Five European Microstates

CATUDAL, Jr., Collegeville, Minn.” Summary: The mini- or microstate is an important but little studied phenomenon in political geography. This article seeks to redress the balance and give these entities some of the attention they deserve. In general, five microstates are examined; all are located in Western Europe-Andorra, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican. The degree to which each is autonomous in its internal affairs is thoroughly explored. And the extent to which each has control over its external relations is investigated. Disadvantages stemming from its small size strike at the heart of the ministate problem. And they have forced these nations to adopt practices which should be of use to large states. THE LESSON: A. INTRODUCTION - DAY 1 B. THE COLONIAL HISTORY - DAY 2-4 C. GEOGRAPHY - DAY 5-6 D. SOUTHEAST ASIA TODAY - DAY 7 III. RECOMMENDED READINGS STUDY GUIDES I. Introduction A. Background Southeast Asia is a land that can be best characterized by one word: diversity. From its indigenous history, through its long period of colonization, to its present struggle of self definition, Southeast Asia remains a world of striking differentiation. There are eleven independent countries that divide the landscape of this vast region. However, one must keep in mind that these nation states highlight geographic boundaries and do not necessarily encapsulate or bound distinctive cultural features or ethnic groups in a larger region. Within the entire region, it is best to think of two areas: the nations that lie in either "insular" (or "island" Southeast Asia) and those that lie in "mainland" (or "continental" Southeast Asia). Insular Southeast Asia is composed of the following six countries: Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, East Timor, and the Philippines. Mainland Southeast Asia is composed of five countries: Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Within each country, one can usually make divisions between "highland" and "lowland" peoples. These are areas of low population and high population, respectively. These are also areas of high economic activity and low economic activity; and areas of present governmental stability and areas of little to no governmental stability.
