Utrecht, 14-08-2008 7 Introduction Saints played an important role in late medieval English society. In order to comprehend the way they functioned in everyday life it is necessary to understand the way people from the Middle Ages viewed reality. The medieval way of looking at everyday events was very different from our modern outlook. In her book Miracles and the Medieval Mind Benedicta Ward argues that while we tend to ask the question how things happen, during the Middle Ages the main question was why they happened.1 This can be seen, as Ward writes, in ‘the number and diversity of events regarded as in some way miraculous.’2 Basically it can be said that during the Middle

    A walk through 1,900 years of history The Bar Walls of York are the finest and most complete of any town in England. There are five main “bars” (big gateways), one postern (a small gateway) one Victorian gateway, and 45 towers. At two miles (3.4 kilometres), they are also the longest town walls in the country. Allow two hours to walk around the entire circuit. In medieval times the defence of the city relied not just on the walls but on the rampart underneath and the ditch surrounding them. The ditch, which has been filled in almost everywhere, was once 60 feet (18.3m) wide and 10 feet (3m) deep! The Walls are generally 13 feet (4m) high and 6 feet (1.8m) wide. The rampart on which they stand is up to 30 feet high (9m) and 100 feet (30m) wide and conceals the earlier defences built by Romans, Vikings and Normans. The event had been created as a result of a growing interest from the citizens of York and the wider Jewish communities outside of the city in Clifford’s Tower and its cultural and historical significance.Helen then spoke about some of the misconceptions about Jewish life in York, in 1 2 particular the belief that a Cherem had been placed on York following the 1190 massacre, forbidding people of Jewish faith to live within the city, particularly not to overnight or eat within the precincts of the City Walls.

FORMER publications * of the Camden Society have brought before our notice Richard Duke of Gloucester, as continually engaged in the intrigues of a court or the storms of civil war, while for four centuries both his person and character have been the theme of almost universal vituperation. Into these subjects it is not the province of the editor of the present volume to enter; and, in truth, there is now the less occasion for it, since the volumes of Miss Halsted have appeared in the field of literature. This talented and zealous writer has adduced a host of authorities, apparently proving that his personal deformity existed but in the libels of an opposing faction, perpetuated in the pages of the poet and the novelist; while at the same time her researches seem to throw such light over the darker shades in his chequered career, as to induce the strongest presumption that he was not guilty of, or accessory to, those startling crimes which have been charged to his account. The limits, however, of the brief introduction allotted to this work, compel us to turn our attention from scenes of battle and of blood to other, and to us more interesting portions of his history. In response to this call, the dissertation attempts to develop a model of Roman Catholic ecological education which seeks an integral development of thoughts, feelings, and actions. For this purpose, the study proposes ecospiritual literacy as a conceptual foundation of Roman Catholic ecological education and develops its basic principles which collectively inspire ecological conversion. Based on an evolutionary cosmology which is concerned with both the physical and spiritual dimensions of the larger reality, the concept of ecospiritual literacy encourages learners to understand how they are deeply embedded within the larger world, to sense the divine sacredness which all of creation reveals, and to participate in their role for enhancing the sacred community of creation. With its emphasis on seeing the whole aspect of the larger reality, ecospiritual literacy enables Roman Catholic ecological education to highlight Earth as an active subject (i.e., as our primary teacher) that reveals ecological and spiritual messages.

    Bernadette Filotas PAGAN SURVIVALS, SUPERSTITIONS AND POPULAR CULTURES IN EARLY MEDIEVAL PASTORAL LITERATURE Is medieval pastoral literature an accurate reflection of actual beliefs and practices in the early medieval West or simply of literary conventions in- herited by clerical writers? How and to what extent did Christianity and traditional pre-Christian beliefs and practices come into conflict, influence each other, and merge in popular culture? This comprehensive study examines early medieval popular culture as it appears in ecclesiastical and secular law, sermons, penitentials and other pastoral works – a selective, skewed, but still illuminating record of the be- liefs and practices of ordinary Christians. On 27 January 1914, the then Dean, Herbert Hensley Henson, revived the Commemoration of Founders and Benefactors. It had been written into the Cathedral Statutes of 1554 but for whatever reason had not been observed for centuries.
