Probabilities and Random Variables Chapter 1 Probabilities and random variables 1.1 Overview Probability theory provides a systematic method for describing randomness and uncertainty. It prescribes a set of mathematical rules for manipulat- ing and calculating probabilities and expectations. It has been applied in many areas: gambling, insurance, finance, the study of experimental error, statistical inference, and more. One standard approach to probability theory (but not the only one) starts from the concept of a sample space, which is an exhaustive list of possible outcomes in an experiment or other situation where the result is uncertain. Subsets of the list are called events. For example, in the very simple situation where 3 coins are tossed, the sample space might be S = fhhh; hht; hth; htt; thh; tht; tth; tttg: There is an event corresponding to \the second coin landed heads", namely, fhhh; hht; thh; thtg: Each element in the sample space corresponds to a uniquely specified out- come. Notice that S contains nothing that would specify an outcome like \the second coin spun 17 times, was in the air for 3.26 seconds, rolled 23.7 inches when it landed, then ended with heads facing up". Probabilities and random variables 2 of S|the detail with which possible outcomes are described|depends on the sort of events we wish to study. In general, a sample space can make it easier to think precisely about events, but it is not always essential. It often suffices to manipulate events via a small number of rules (to be specified soon) without explicitly identi- fying the events with subsets of a sample space. If the outcome of the experiment corresponds to a point of a sample space belonging to some event, one says that the event has occurred. For example, with the outcome hhh each of the events fno tailsg, fat least one headg, fmore heads than tailsg occurs, but the event feven number of headsg does not. The uncertainty is modelled by a probability assigned to each event. The probabibility of an event E is denoted by PE. The vertical bar stands for the word given; that is, we read the symbol as probability of at least two heads given that . Remark. The symbol P· j info) denotes the conditional probability given the information; it is NOT the probability of a conditional event. I regard \A j info" without the P as meaningless. If the conditioning information is held fixed throughout a calculation, the conditional probabilities P (. j info) satisfy rules (P1) through (P4). For example, P(; j info) = 0, and so on. In that case one usually doesn't bother with the \given . ", but if the information changes during the analysis the conditional probability notation becomes most useful. The final rule for (conditional) probabilities lets us break occurrence of an event into a succession of simpler stages, whose conditional probabilities might be easier to calculate or assign. Often the successive stages correspond to the occurrence of each of a sequence of events, in which case the notation is abbreviated in any of the following ways: P (. j event A and event B have occurred and previous info) P (. j A \ B and previous info) where \ means intersection P (. j A, B, previous info) P (. j A \ B) or P (. j AB) if \previous info" is understood: if the \previous info" is understood. I often write AB instead of A \ B for an intersection of two sets. The commas in the third expression are open to misinterpretation, but convenience recommends the more concise notation. " is a description in words, then f... g denotes the subset of S on which the description is true, and Pf::: g or P{· · · j infog seems the natural way to denote the probability attached to that subset. However, if the \. " stand for an expression like A \ B, the notation P(A \ B) or P(A \ B j info) looks nicer to me. It is hard to maintain a convention that covers all cases. You should not attribute much significance to differences in my notation involving a choice between parentheses and braces. Rule for conditional probability (P5) : if A and B are events then P (A \ B j info) = P (A j info) · P (B j A, info) : The frequency interpretation might make it easier for you to appreciate this rule. Suppose that in N \independent" repetitions (given the same initial conditioning information) A occurs NA times and A\B occurs NA\B times. Then, for N large, P (A j info) ≈ NA=N and P (A \ B j info) ≈ NA\B=N: If we ignore those repetitions where A fails to occur then we have NA repeti- tions given the original information and occurrence of A, in NA\B of which the event B also occurs. Thus P (B j A, info) ≈ NA\B=NA. The rest is division. Remark. Many textbooks define P(B j A) as the ratio P(BA)=PA, which is just a rearrangement of (P5) without the info. That definition, not surprisingly, gives students the idea that conditional probabilities are always determined by taking ratios, which is not true. Often the assignment of conditional probabilities is part of the modelling. See Example <1.3> for example. In my experience, conditional probabilities provide a more reliable method for solving problems traditionally handled by counting arguments (Combi- natorics). I find it hard to be consistent about how I count, to make sure every case is counted once and only once, to decide whether order should matter, and so on. The next Example illustrates my point. I wrote out many of the gory details to show you how the rules reduce the calculation to a sequence of simpler steps. In practice, one would be less explicit, to keep the audience awake. The statement of the next example is taken verbatim from the delightful Fifty Challenging Problems in Probability by Frederick Mosteller, one of my favourite sources for elegant examples. One could learn a lot of probability by trying to solve all fifty problems. The underlying question has resurfaced in recent years in various guises. The lesson is: Be prepared to defend your assignments of conditional probabilities. Example <1.3> Three prisoners, A, B, and C, with apparently equally good records have applied for parole. The parole board has decided to release two of the three, and the prisoners know this but not which two. A warder friend of prisoner A knows who are to be released. Prisoner A realizes that it would be unethical to ask the warder if he, A, is to be released, but thinks of asking for the name of one prisoner other than himself who is to be released. He thinks that before he asks, his chances of release are 2/3.

It is observed that iden- tifying a set with its indicator function makes it clear that a fuzzy set is a direct and natural generalization of a set. Making this identification also provides sim- plified proofs of various relationships between sets. Connectives for fuzzy sets that generalize those for sets are defined. The fundamentals of ordinary probability theory are reviewed and these ideas are used to motivate fuzzy probability theory. Observables (fuzzy random variables) and their distributions are defined. Some applications of fuzzy probability theory to quantum mechanics and computer science are briefly considered. 1. INTRODUCTION What do we mean by fuzzy probability theory? Isn't probability theory already fuzzy? That is, probability theory does not give precise answers but only probabilities. The imprecision in probability theory comes from our incomplete knowledge of the system but the random variables (measure- ments) still have precise values. For example, when we flip a coin we have only a partial knowledge about the physical structure of the coin and the initial conditions of the flip. If our knowledge about the coin were com- plete, we could predict exactly whether the coin lands heads or tails. However, we still assume that after the coin lands, we can tell precisely whether it is heads or tails. In fuzzy probability theory, we also have an imprecision in our measurements, and random variables must be replaced by fuzzy random variables and events by fuzzy events.

    10.0 Lesson Plan 1 Answer Questions • Robust Estimators • Maximum Likelihood Estimators • 10.1 Robust Estimators Previously, we claimed to like estimators that are unbiased, have minimum variance, and/or have minimum mean squared error. Typically, one cannot achieve all of these properties with the same estimator. 2 An estimator may have good properties for one distribution, but not for n another. We saw that n−1 Z, for Z the sample maximum, was excellent in estimating θ for a Unif(0,θ) distribution. But it would not be excellent for estimating θ when, say, the density function looks like a triangle supported on [0,θ]. A robust estimator is one that works well across many families of distributions. In particular, it works well when there may be outliers in the data. The 10% trimmed mean is a robust estimator of the population mean. It discards the 5% largest and 5% smallest observations, and averages the rest. (Obviously, one could trim by some fraction other than 10%, but this is a commonly-used value.) Surveyors distinguish errors from blunders. Errors are measurement jitter 3 attributable to chance effects, and are approximately Gaussian. Blunders occur when the guy with the theodolite is standing on the wrong hill. A trimmed mean throws out the blunders and averages the good data. If all the data are good, one has lost some sample size. But in exchange, you are protected from the corrosive effect of outliers. 10.2 Strategies for Finding Estimators Some economists focus on the method of moments. This is a terrible procedure—its only virtue is that it is easy.

    Overview of Measure Theory January 14, 2013 In this section, we will give a brief overview of measure theory, which leads to a general notion of an integral called the Lebesgue integral. Integrals, as we saw before, are important in probability theory since the notion of expectation or average value is an integral. The ideas presented in this theory are fairly general, but their utility will not be immediately visible. However, a general note is that we are trying to quantify how \small" or how \large" a set is. Recall that if a bounded function has only finitely many discontinuities, it is still Riemann-integrable. The Dirichlet function was an example of a function with uncountably many discontinuities, and it failed to be Riemann-integrable. Is there a notion of \smallness" such that if a function is bounded except for a small set, then we can compute its integral? For example, we could say a set is \small" on the real line if it has at most countably infinitely many elements. Unfortunately, this is not enough to deal with the integral of the Dirichlet function. So we need a notion adequate to deal with the integral of functions such as the Dirichlet function. We will deal with such a notion of integral in this section. It allows us to prove a fairly general theorem called the \Dominated Convergence Theorem", which does not hold for the Riemann integral, and is useful for some of the results in our course. Traditionally, probabilists and statisticians use upper-case Latin letters near the end of the alphabet to denote random variables. This has confused generations of students, who have trouble thinking of random variables as functions. For the sake of tradition, and so that you get used to it, we follow suit.
