Wayne A. Patton Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary, 2013 Mentor: Dr. Rick Rasberry Several key aspects of eschatology and their treatment appear to be under-explored in contemporary preaching. Within the context of individual eschatology, notions of death, the intermediate state, and the eternal state vary widely. A clearer understanding of these facets of the faith are necessary to fully understand the full measure of the work of Christ, the hope Christians have in Him, and the ability to convey these essentials to the lost. In this project, the writer will seek to discover and examine the key aspects of this doctrine and measure the level of sophistication among a sample of the laity. The measurement will be conducted via a confidential online survey of professing believers. At a practical level the goal of the project is that both pastors and laity would be edified on the central issues of the doctrine and that per its content pastors could utilize the data to craft sermons and lessons that take into consideration the identified weaknesses in knowledge as expressed by the participants. It is the one universal and undeniable fact of life irrespective of age, culture, ideology, or belief. And yet it evokes a wide variety of human responses, whether emotional, physical or material. Variety can be seen not just across different cultures, but also within any one particular culture. Death is universal, but reactions to it are distinctive. 1 To the question, “What happens to you when you die?” one will likely get a fairly small range of answers. There are quite simply not that many options that would come to mind. If that question is asked in the United States, depending on the person’s faith, or lack thereof, one could expect hear a variety of responses. Perhaps some people would say that the departed go to heaven, or that they go to a place of punishment, either temporarily or permanently, i.e. purgatory or hell. Some may hold a more atheistic perspective and believe that the dead simply cease to exist, that death is the end of the line, as it were. Given the increasing influence of Eastern religions, some may hold that the dead will be reincarnated or will become a part of the universe. There is a good chance that the person will say he simply does not know what lies in store beyond this present life. Still, data indicates that they do believe in some sort of continuation of existence after death, and the research also shows that this general belief has held steady over time, at least in the United States.2 In some instances this trend is actually on the rise in recent years: A significantly greater fraction of American adults believe in life after death in the 1990s than in the 1970s. For instance, the percentage of Catholics believing in an afterlife rose from 67% to 85% for those born between 1900 and 1970.3 But, as noted, responses would also reflect a variety of beliefs, some of which do not line up with what the Bible actually teaches on the matter, even among professing Christians. They did this in order for human beings to be able to comprehend the message that is being given to them from God. The word angel means messenger. And each angel has a specific function to perform based on their rank. There are nine ranks of angels: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels and Angels. Seraphim are caretakers to the throne of God and lead the worship of God in heaven. Cherubim guard the tree of life and the throne of God. Thrones are living symbols of God’s justice and authority and listening to the will of God present the prayers of human beings to Him.

A Re-examination of Luther’s View on the State of the Dead Trevor O’Reggio Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary Andrews University Introduction Luther’s theology was forged in the crucible of his struggle to find forgiveness and peace from his overwhelming sense of guilt. He had an acute sense of misery and felt as if he hung in the balance between life and death. The German word that captures something of Luther’s emotional state is Anfechtung—one feels cut off from God and hope is suffocated. “Anfechtung is the foretaste of the peril of death.”1 It was not only the fear of death that terrorized him, but death itself was an ever-present reality for Luther. He lost two of his children in childhood, so by virtue of his experience, and his theology, he was forced to wrestle with the meaning of death and the after-life. It is not surprising then that Luther wrote much about death, some of it at times confusing and complicated. Did Luther believe in soul sleep or in an immortal soul that survives death? There are generally two views concerning the state of the dead among Christians. The first view asserts that when a person dies, his soul survives death and continues to exist in some place. For those who are saved, they go straight into paradise. For those who are not so righteous, they go into some halfway house called purgatory (Catholic view) where they are purified and made ready for paradise.

I was told it was God’s home, a paradise our loved ones went to after their lives ended. I grew up with heaven in the back of my mind, but recently I have been contemplating what heaven is on a more specific level, instead of accepting the broad, cheerful definitions I inherited. Becoming an adult has brought a high degree of spiritual growth into the forefront of my life. Among all this growing up, my own wonderings about heaven kept resurfacing. I, and perhaps every other human being, am naturally drawn to thoughts that capture my senses, and my musings about heaven are no different. What does it look like? How does it feel to be there? Questions like these almost sound juvenile now that I consider them, but, if given the chance, I trust that any believer would be ecstatic to experience the realm of God during their lives. I began searching for others’ thoughts, and I came across an overwhelming number of people who claim to have taken trips to heaven by the power of Jesus and His angels. They recounted beautiful sensory details, like dazzling colors beyond those of the physical world, adorning a fantastic divine realm they saw with spiritual eyes. I spent hours listening to these stunning testimonies, not even considering if they were the truth or simply hopeful imaginings.

    THE REALITY OF HELL Bob Ross Is there a place of literal fire where lost sinners will be confined throughout eternity? “HELL” • “SHEOL” • “HADES” • “GEHENNA” • “TARTARUS” The Bible was written in three languages: Hebrew (Old Testament), Chaldee (por- tion of Daniel), and Greek (New Testament). The Bible that we have today is a translation of the Hebrew, Chaldee, and Greek writings into our language. There are many transla- tions of the Bible, the most popular being the King James Version, which you probably own. The Word “Hell” in the King James Version There are four words in the KJV translated “hell.” Of these four words, only one of them is used in the Old Testament. That word is the Hebrew word “Sheol.” In the New Testament, the three words translated “hell” are “hades,” “gehenna,” and “tartarus,” all Greek words. What do these words mean? 1. The Hebrew word “sheol” is translated as follows. “Hell”—31 times, as in Psalm 9:17: “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.” “Grave”—31 times, as in Ecclesiastes 9:10: “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.” “Pit”—3 times, as in Job 17:16: “They shall go down to the bars of the pit, when our rest together is in the dust.” But actually, the Hebrew word “sheol” does not mean either “hell,” “grave,” or “pit.” It means “the unseen world” or “the place of departed spirits.” Notice how it is de- fined: Strong’s Hebrew and Chaldee Dictionary says that “sheol” is “the world of the dead.” Young’s Analytical Concordance says that “sheol” is “the unseen state.” Smiths Bible Dictionary says that “sheol” is “always the abode of departed spirits.” Fausset’s Bible Dictionary and Encyclopedia says that “sheol” is “the common re- ceptacle of the dead.” So sheol does not strictly refer to hell, but to the place of departed spirits, irrespec- tive of whether saved or lost.
