  • Club History
Club History Organised football in Bangor dates from a meeting held in the city’s Magistrates' Rooms on 18 December 1876 – but not football as we might imagine because it was the handling variety that was first played in the city. It wasn’t until nearly a year later that it was decided to abandon rugby, to concentrate on association football, and to join the Football Association of Wales. The reason for the change of code? The number of players injured in that first experimental season! At that time, the club played at the Maes y Dref ground, at the lower end of Bangor’s High Street, and in the early years concentrated on playing challenge (friendly) fixtures and competing in the various cup competitions. Obviously, the club had no lack of ambition as on Easter Monday 1880, they took on the mighty Blackburn Rovers, giving a good account of themselves in a narrow 2 – 1 defeat. Nine years later, Bangor won the Welsh Cup for the first time, beating Northwich Victoria 2 – 1 at Wrexham before a crowd of 4,000, and in 1895-96 put on an even more impressive performance, beating north Wales giants Wrexham 3 – 0 at Llandudno to win football’s second-oldest cup competition for the second time. The Welsh Cup has been a favourite trophy of Bangor City over the years. City has won the trophy eight times – only Wrexham, Cardiff and Swansea have won it more often. Despite, or perhaps because of, City’s success in cup competitions, it became clear that the Maes y Dref ground was not up to standard, attracting complaints from visiting teams.

Information Pack and Toolkit Introduction Football and it’s clubs, leagues, associations and governing bodies have always been about much more than just a game, professional football club or organisation of governance. The first two years of the #Morethanfootball Action Weeks have shown there is an appetite amongst the football familty to use the game as a tool for social development. The #Morethanfootball Action Weeks have allowed us to follow many great initiatives showcasing how football addresses key societal issues on an increasing scale. Yet, CSR often seems to be done in the background with little or no attention given to it by the mainstream football media. You will find thousands of articles, blogs, social media posts, news, television talk shows about the teams performance, team selection, transfers and the build up to fixtures however very rarely do you see stories of the excellent daily work being done through football organisations community and social development initiatives. All European clubs are much more than just the 11 players on the pitch. In order to showcase and further broaden the reach of Community and Social Responsibility in European football the#Morethanfootball Action Weeks were established in 2017. Following the success from the campaign in it’s first 2 years, the 2019 #Morethanfootball Action Weeks again brings together the European football community to not only celebrate the work done in the CSR field over a 2 week period but to create a #Morethanfootball ongoing movement. Socialisation, including primary socialisation, is a focus of interest for social scientists, sociologists in particular. Empirical findings indicate that primary socialisation which people go through in the early years of their lives plays a fundamental role in preparing them for living within a society. The reason is that primary socialisation takes place in the emotional environment of a family and children live in microcosms defined by their parents, microcosms to which there is no alternative. It is interesting to find out whether this process also affects the area of sport. The aim of this study is to examine the influence of primary socialisation on the choice of football as the ultimate sport of choice by players of Poland’s best first-league football team in the 2012/13 season. Material and methods. The study involved a survey conducted between April st1 and 30th, 2013, on a purposive sample of N = 25 football players of the first-league Legia Warsaw football club.
