elcome to today's performance of the Sammamish Symphony Orchestra. W As I celebrate my 11th year with this group of talented musicians, it is gratifying to reflect upon the remarkable growth the Orchestra has achieved over the years. The dedication and diligence of each member is evident in the ever improving level of artistry displayed in each performance. Be sure to visit our web-site at www.sammamishsymphony.org for a complete listing of works presented this season. Now, I invite you to sit back and enjoy the concert! Pine Lake Park Concert - 2009 The Sammamish Symphony Orchestra performs on the Sammamish Plateau and various locations in the area. It is committed to offering quality music at affordable prices for Eastside residents. This volunteer ensemble provides the opportunity for talented, dedicated musicians to perform with a full symphony orchestra. In addition, the Orchestra promotes involvement in the arts for young musicians who are given the chance to participate in classical and pops concerts. Now in its seventeenth season, the Sammamish Symphony began as the Providence Point Players, and has grown in size and stature to become an integral part of the Eastside artistic community. What started as a handful of musicians has evolved into a dynamic musical organization. In April of this year the Orchestra enjoyed a great success in its debut performance at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, appearing with other Northwest performing arts groups. NEWNEW RELEASESRELEASES THETHE GOLDENGOLDEN AGEAGE OFOF LIGHTLIGHT MUSICMUSIC Light And Latin Just as no two music lovers will probably ever agree on the precise boundaries that define Light Music, the aficionados of Latin American will also happily argue about its origins. There seems little doubt that most will accept that the vast continent of the Americas, from Mexico southwards, qualifies as being generally regarded as 'Latin America', so the rhythms and styles of more than twenty countries have contributed to its emergence - particularly from the 1930s onwards - as an enjoyable part of the popular music scene. Add to this the influence of music makers from the United States and Europe, and the result is a mix that may sometimes have corrupted the roots, but has succeeded in making what we all regard as 'Latin American Music' universally popular. It is therefore hardly surprising that many light orchestras have included it in their repertoire, notably Percy Faith, Werner Müller, Carmen Dragon, Stanley Black and Andre Kostelanetz, among many others. GLCD 5213 The Composer Conducts - Volume 3 Composers are often envied by those who do not possess the necessary talent to be able to produce a musical work that others will enjoy. But a touch of genius can sometimes generate frustration. Few writers are completely satisfied with the way in which their works are performed by orchestras over which they have little or no control, so it is a bonus for both composer and listener when music is conducted by the original creator. Of course there are instances where arrangers and conductors can occasionally reveal hidden beauty that even the composer did not fully appreciate, but that is another story.
