  • The Birds Are Back with a Brand New Series of Birds of a Feather, Premiering on Uktv from July 6
Tuesday June 24, 2014 THE BIRDS ARE BACK WITH A BRAND NEW SERIES OF BIRDS OF A FEATHER, PREMIERING ON UKTV FROM JULY 6 Sixteen years after the show ended, Chigwell’s most famous daughters are back with the revival of 90s hit comedy series, Birds of a Feather premiering in Australia on UKTV from July 6. The new series (8 x 30’) has been a massive ratings hit in the UK, attracting audiences of up to 9.5 million making the 2014 series the most successful comedy launch for ITV in over a decade. Another series has been commissioned. The revival offers fans a dose of nostalgia with all three original actresses - Pauline Quirke, Linda Robson and Lesley Joseph reprising their roles as the original Essex girls. Also making a comeback are original writers Laurence Marks, Maurice Gran, Gary Lawson and John Phelps who teamed up to write the new eight-part series. As the series begins, sisters Sharon and Tracey are living separate lives, and Dorien has seemingly flown off into the sunset to live a jestetting life as a writer of a racy novel, “Sixty Shades of Green”. Meanwhile Tracey’s marriage to former robber Darryl petered out years ago and she has since remarried and got divorced again… but she still lives in relative comfort in Essex’s legendary Chigwell with pampered teenage son Travis. She gets by with a Telesales job, but times aren’t easy and she misses her older son Garth (Matt Willis), who’s been living in Australia. Meanwhile Sharon scrapes a minimum wage in “World of Quid”, Essex’s leading “everything’s a pound” chain, and is as chippy as ever.

Brief ‘One Minute to Save the World’ is your starting point, what have YOU got to say..? Make a film about something that you believe in A film that makes us sit up and take notice A film that blows us away A film that makes us think A film that asks questions Make a film that you are proud of The ‘One Minute to Save the World’ short filmmaking competition is for young people aged 19 or under. The theme for this year’s Children’s Media Conference is “limitless”. The conference will explore what that means for young people. We are keen that your approach to the “One Minute to Save the World” competition should be as free of limits as possible. Show us what you think and feel – with no limits! Your one-minute film does not have to be on a children’s and youth topic or aimed at a young audience. 1 Rules • All key filmmakers must be 19 or under at the time the film is submitted • Writer, director and cinematographer/camera operator must be 19 or under • On-screen talent/actors can be any age • Films can be fiction, non-fiction or animated • Films can be any genre Entry Requirements • Films must be under 60 seconds (not including titles and credits, these can be up to a further 10 seconds if needed) • Films can be in any frame size or shape e.g, 4:3, 16:9, HD, 4k or vertical smart phone sizes.

  • July 2018 Nickolas Grace Wayne Sleep OBE
President: Vice President: No. 503 - July 2018 Nickolas Grace Wayne Sleep OBE Shakespeare’s Birthday Party Reviewed by Liz Schafer The guest of honour at the 2018 Vic-Wells Association’s Shakespeare’s birthday party was Claire Bloom and it was particularly appropriate that the party was held in the rehearsal room where Claire rehearsed during her time at the Old Vic. She hadn’t enjoyed studying at the Central School of Speech and Drama, but here at the Vic she had revelled in working on the rôles of Juliet, (with Alan Badel as Romeo and Peter Finch as Mercutio), Ophelia (to Richard Burton’s Hamlet). She also played Viola in a Twelfth Night that included John Neville as Orsino, Paul Daneman as Feste, Richard Burton almost unrecognisable as a bewhiskered Sir Toby Belch and Michael Hordern as Malvolio. Meanwhile Viola’s twin Sebastian was played by Robert Hardy (How could Claire Bloom ever be mistaken for Robert Hardy?). Our President, Nickolas Grace, introduced Claire and pointed out how early her career took off – she was only 21 when she was picked out by Charlie Chaplin to star in Limelight: a daunting prospect, but Chaplin was totally supportive. Nickolas then reminisced about time spent working with Claire on Brideshead Claire Bloom as Thereza in Limelight Revisited when Nickolas played the outrageous Anthony Blanche and Claire played Lady Marchmain. Claire commented that although the cast was stellar, it was producer Derek Granger who was crucial in convincing her to do the series. Claire’s speech was the first try out of the Vic-Wells microphone, purchased so that speakers at parties can be heard more easily.
