They are arranged by the department to develop the right orientation and also to inculcate social concern. The students have to undergo summer internship at the end of 1st year M.Sc HRD, and a report has to be prepared and submitted to the department. Opportunities at the Department 1. The library is well stocked and updated every year with latest edition.

29

NAAC Reaccreditation - Evaluative Report School of Social Sciences Department of Psychology Challenges faced by the Department 1. Students of the Department: The students of the department come from varied backgrounds. Each student is unique and requires a different level of training in acquiring the skills that are taught at the department. Thus, the challenge faced by the Department of Psychology is not only providing basic knowledge but also to equip all the students with the necessary skills that will be transferable to their career.

2. Research Projects: With limited number of faculties, the department strives to undertake research projects relevant to community and society that are socially relevant. It is a huge challenge for the department to manage its resources not only for teaching, research and extension services but also to complete such projects successfully.

3. Competition from other fields: There is competition from other departments such as MBA, sociology, education in offering the extension services that are relevant to the field of psychology. In our country, till today, both recruitment and training is being conducted by professional from MBA; however, it is a core domain of psychology, where the standardized test materials are available to select the right person for the right job. But we find it extremely challenging to convince the HR professionals on the uses of psychological tests and training modules developed by the psychologists such as stress management, emotional management, socialization skills, competency mapping, interview skills, team building skills, communication skills, leadership training, transactional analysis and corporate counselling.

4. Awareness among recruiters: The challenge faced by the young professionals in the field of psychology is that they have to convince the recruiters to get the job of a psychologist in their organization. There has most often been a misconception in the recruiters about the nature of the work psychology graduates are capable of handling at an organization. Even today, due recognition to psychology is not attained because of the misconceptions about psychology.

5. Distance education: Few students enrolling for psychology course at the department have their background education from distance learning. This poses a

30

NAAC Reaccreditation - Evaluative Report School of Social Sciences Department of Psychology tremendous challenge in helping these students acquire the basic skills apart from the regular curriculum of the programme.

Weakness in the Department 1. International publications: Although the department encourages the students to involve in research activities, the papers published by students are mostly in the Indian Journals. This has been a major limitation of the department.

2. Limited strength of faculties: With the limited number of faculties, the department struggles to undertake multiple projects apart from meeting everyday requirement of the departmental activities.

3. Consultancy services: The department has limited number of faculty members who are involved in high workload especially in teaching, research guidance and the administrative work of the University. This does not give sufficient time to concentrate on external consultancy services. 4. Experimental laboratory: Experiments are an essential part of psychology to prove psychology as subject of science. This requires well-established, standardized laboratory at the department. The laboratory facility at the department is well equipped only for doing experiments at post graduation level. Thus, limited scope is available to conduct experiments at the department for the research. 52. Future plans of the department. The following plans may be implemented in order to make the department more efficient and updated. · The Department has future plan to avail UGC – SAP assistance in Applied Psychology. · The ongoing project namely “Centre for Cognitive and Behavioural Research” will attract industries/institutions to have a collaborative research programme in artificial intelligence, speed reading and other computer related cognitive psychology. · It is proposed to initiate e – learning courses as it has got more scope and demand in all the Industries and Institutions.
