The underground water irrigation system that failed earlier this year is still an issue. Pallets of the panels are located on-site ready for the next step. Jonathan Hirst, clerk of works for the school system on this project, hopes a resolution will happen in the next few weeks.

Sheridan has a bus driver’s license, which allows them to go wherever they need to as a class. “One day last week we went to Central Elementary School,” said Sheridan. “We hauled about 15 boxes of paper to the copy room, we also moved about 20 boxes of food over to MACAA, we collected about 15 bags of recycling, we put together a table, we trimmed box tops, cleaned up the lost and found area, and that was all in one day.” There are a variety of reasons why students chose to be in Sheridan’s class instead of another elective. “A lot of times the kids who struggle to shine in an academic course may love to work,” said Sheridan. “This is something they can feel posi- tive about.” “Coach Sheridan has coached me for sports and I knew him so I thought it would be cool to be in his class,” said Eric Martin, a Helping Hands stu- dent. “I’m friends with everybody in the class. I like to help people if they need help and be able to work with other people.” As for the future of the class, Sheridan would like to see more intergenerational volunteer work with other local community service clubs. “We’re trying to get together with the Ruritan club because they do great work,” said Sheridan. “They give away about 100 pickup trucks of wood each year. They’re all in their sixties, seventies and eighties. I’d love to get my kids around them just to watch how they work and follow their example. What greater example can I set for them?” Eric Wentz, Brian Brown, Tezian Tinsley and Marcos Arroyo clean up at Columbia Elementary School. Photos by O.T. Holen.

FluvannaReview.com Hoop team will play up-tempo BY DUNCAN NIXON CORRESPONDENT

The Fluvanna High School boys’ basketball team will be guided again this year by Munro Rateau, a veteran coach who was feted two years ago for exceeding 400 wins in an extraordinary career. Returning from last year’s Jefferson district play-off team, that finished 12-8, are four seniors and a junior. Two back court returnees who Rateau described as “excellent guards” are Ya Ya Anderson, a Jefferson District first team selection last season as a soph- omore, and Jamal Tolliver, who was a major contributor last season, at both ends of the court. Anderson, who is a 6-2 combination guard will certainly be one of the most danger- ous offensive threats in the Jefferson District. Also returning for their sen- ior season are: Aric Edmonds, Jordan Green and Spenser Tinsley. In the forecourt, Rateau will be looking for contributions from two standouts from the football team.
