The companion to 3US45GEsy Shannara!By gloine36Best selling author Terry Brooks, aided by Teresa QNj36TsuZ Patterson, has brought the world of Shannara to his readers in this updated 6pcwkbn7q guide. With 17 books in the Shannara series in print at the time of this atlass 6312cPGgV publication and six more written since then with two more on the way, Brooks 4hKSvIHDC has a solid fan base which clamored for this book. Heavily illustrated, the atlas BOLBWsE5A serves as a guide for budding fans of the series. Maps detail the vast area he iWREvAJEc has explored through the many characters. Additionally, entries on major jHPkRcGj2 characters, events, and items fill readers in on details that may have been c5N6uyInF overlooked during the reading process. Three major drawbacks exist though. nTc8VszWo One is that this edition is not up to date with the last six books of the series. The AYifv3L0t second is that as a reader who had the Hildebrandt Brothers illustrated edition NI4JurECJ of The Sword of Shannara many years ago, I would have loved to have seen Omcgoq6z3 those pictures in this atlas. Unfortunately, that did not take place. Third, and I NoOD0FNDJ say this for all Shannara fans, this book just is not enough. It could easily be doubled in size. As a reader who eagerly awaits a new Shannara book, no book ever has enough of Brooks writing. I also would have liked to have seen more exploration of the lands that the series takes place in. The opportunity was here for a great expansion of the world for Brooks to work in and it seems that he chose not to do so, leaving Patterson to work with his written books only. Brooks has remarked that he only allowed this book to be created due to pressure from the fans. I think he missed a major opportunity to use the book to reach a new group of fans by limiting the content. That of course is his choice. All in all though, the book does satisfy fans. It is a detail driven work and like most works of high fantasy, it allows for the readers imagination to fill in the gaps. Since Brooks is one of the best high fantasy authors in the genre, his way with words gives readers plenty of material to work with. This book, while answering many questions, leaves a lot to the imagination of the reader which is what any good fantasy author does. Despite the flaws, this book is worth reading for fans. It is especially useful to new fans as they can use the atlas to explore the world of Shannara in conjunction with the books they are reading at the current moment.6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I believe that Brooks was only involved minutely to oversee the production of this project.Now that it has been updated to cover the entire world of Shannara, including cthe Word/Void and Genesis series I am much happier. I have a feeling Terry had more input this time around because the facts are a little more concise now.However, things I'd still like to see are character illustrations of all major characters in the Shannara Word/Void series. The fans would love to see how Terry envisions all of the heros villans. I love that there's now a book with all of the information, pictures, and histories all in one place. There was so much info that I couldn't even finish it, barely made a dent, after a few hours. It's a good solid book, and will make a beautiful addition to my shelf. It made me want to read the entire series all over again! It’s in the Horse and Tram on Eden Quay, at 8 p.rn. This is a necessary evil - it’s a WRITERS & WRITING 2 forum for airing views, electing a new committee, and discussing the future of the FANS 4 Association. Over the past year the CONVENTIONS 5 Association has succeeded in its aims of bringing science fiction to die attention of die CLUBS 5 public in many ways: SfEx had an attendance of over 700, and featured excellent and varied FANZINES 6 artwork and sculpture by both professional FIRST CONTACT 7 and amateur artists; FTL has progressed from a photocopied fanzine to a fully-printed ROBERT HOLDSTOCK magazine which promises a lot for the future; INTERVIEWED 8 the Aisling Gheal Short Story Competition was sponsored by Harry Harrison, won by REVIEWS 12 Brendan Farrell (who is now head of distribution for Fl'Ll) and attracted over 60 FIVE BOOKS 18 entries; our meetings ranged from a simple THE COMIC COLUMN 19 book auction to ‘An Evening With Clive Barker’ and ‘An Evening Widi Terry Brooks’; UPCOMING ISFA EVENTS 20 we also had celebrations of Blake’s 7 and Star Trek; the Newsletter expanded from eight pages to twenty-four, and the topics covered PRODUCTION widiin it likewise broadened; Octocon, run by ISFA members, had over 600 attendees and EDITOR: Brendan Ryder was a huge success.     A World of Dragons, Drakes and Wyrms Have you ever wondered what life would be like if magic and magi- cal creatures did exist? Could we actually co-exist in a world filled with these mythological wonders? Well I’m definitely not the per- son who could answer that question! But if you check out our website there are quite a few people coming to this year’s conven- tion that can. So, hit the website and checked out the list of at- tending guests. It’s pretty impressive again this year. So, if I can’t answer the important question of life what does the Chairman do? Well, I’m the person who’s job it is to make sure that all the parts and pieces are in place when you walk in the door. And I must say it’s looking good. The Deal- ers Room is full, the Art Show is looking like it may sell out. We’ve got one of the best line-ups of Guests of Honor of any convention in the country. And what I’ve seen of the program- ming so far is pretty darn exciting. If you’re wondering what panels are be- ing put in place well, yep, I’ll say it again, keep checking the website for the updates as we finalize the progamming grid. If you haven’t gotten your mem- bership you still can avoid those lines! If you haven’t saved up all your nickels and dimes to buy that Burns or Whelan painting, well there’s always your credit cards.
