    Chronologically Lewis Joel D. Heck All notes are done in the present tense of the verb for consistency. Start and end dates of term are those officially listed in the Oxford calendar. An email from Robin Darwall-Smith on 11/26/2008 explains the discrepancies between official term dates and the notes of C. S. Lewis in his diary and letters: “Term officially starts on a Thursday, but then 1st Week (out of 8) starts on the following Sunday (some might say Saturday, but it ought to be Sunday). The week in which the start of term falls is known now as „0th Week‟. I don‟t know how far back that name goes, but I‟d be surprised if it wasn‟t known in Lewis‟s day. The system at the start of term which I knew in the 1980s - and which I guess was there in Lewis‟s time too - was that the undergraduates had to be in residence by the Thursday of 0th Week; the Friday was set aside for start of term Collections (like the ones memorably described in Lewis‟s diary at Univ.!), and for meetings with one‟s tutors. Then after the weekend lectures and tutorials started in earnest on the Monday of 1st Week.” Email from Robin Darwall-Smith on 11/27/2008: “The two starts to the Oxford term actually have names. There‟s the start of term, in midweek, and then the start of „Full Term‟, on the Sunday - and is always Sunday. Lectures and tutorials start up on the following day.

    The David Nicholls Memorial Lectures No. 1 1999 “STEPPING OUT OF BABYLON: THEOLOGY AND POLITICS IN THE THOUGHT OF DAVID NICHOLLS” Kenneth Leech “STEPPING OUT OF BABYLON: THEOLOGY AND POLITICS IN THE THOUGHT OF DAVID NICHOLLS” The first David Nicholls Memorial Lecture, given at Regents Park College, Oxford, on 9th October 1999 by KENNETH LEECH On hearing the news of David’s death, his dear friend Fr Percy Coleman commented: ‘David did not care about the world -yet he cared passionately about the world.’ In this Zen-like, typically ‘Percyan’ utterance, he captured the heart, the dialectical core, of David Nicholls’s thought: worldly and otherworldly, caring nothing for worldly power and status, caring deeply about justice and mercy in the world. David Nicholls was both a political theorist and a theologian. His political work involved the study of pluralism in the thought of JN Figgis, the political history of Haiti from Dessalines to Duvalier, and, in the years before his death, the relationship between political structures and images of God, the subject of his Hulsean Lectures. Two volumes, Deity and Domination and God and Government, have appeared. He was a polymath: the political scientist; the theologian; the humble and caring parish priest in Littlemore; the polemical pamphleteer; the historian of the Caribbean; and so much else. Chris Rowland, in a talk given shortly after David’s death, said that, while he was never part of the ‘inner circle’ of Oxford theology, he ‘embodied in his life and writing all that is best in Oxford theology’. Many people knew only one or two sides of his life and work.

Recent scholarship on modern religious history has sought to relocate Britain‟s „secularization moment‟ from the industrialization of the nineteenth century to the social and cultural upheavals of the 1960s. My thesis seeks to add to this debate by examining the way in which the established Church and Christian doctrine continued to play a central role in the politics of the 1980s. More specifically it analyses the conflict between the Conservative party and the once labelled „Tory party at Prayer‟, the Church of England. Both Church and state during this period were at loggerheads, projecting contrasting visions of the Christian underpinnings of the nation‟s political values. Bishop June Osborne of the Diocese of Llandaff is has organised for him to the St Padarn’s Institute in Cardiff for a year of formation starting in September 2019. He will be based in a parish context from the outset and he will continue in that parish for his Curacy. Consequently today is the final ‘formal’ day that Ian is with us in his role as an LLM (Licensed Lay Minister). However, I have absolutely no doubt that he will be back amongst us soon as a guest deacon then priest. Ian and Bernhard have called All Saints their spiritual home and have been part of our worshipping community since 2004. Please keep Ian and Bernhard in your prayers and we look forward to welcoming both back in the not too distant future. Posy Making – Saturday 30th March at 10.00am Sunday is Mothering Sunday. Weiss June 2011 The religious mind of Mrs Thatcher 2 ------------------------------------------- ABSTRACT Addressing a significant historical and biographical gap in accounts of the life of Margaret Thatcher, this paper focuses on the formation of Mrs Thatcher’s religious beliefs, their application during her premiership, and the reception of these beliefs. Using the previously unseen sermon notes of her father, Alfred Roberts, as well as the text of three religious sermons Thatcher delivered during her political career and numerous interviews she gave speaking on her faith, this paper suggests that the popular view of Roberts’ religious beliefs have been wide of the mark, and that Thatcher was a deeply religious politician who took many of her moral and religious beliefs from her upbringing. In the conclusion, further areas for research linking Thatcher’s faith and its political implications are suggested. Throughout this paper, hyperlinks are made to the Thatcher Foundation website (www.margaretthatcher.org) where the sermons, speeches, and interviews that Margaret Thatcher gave on her religious beliefs can be found.     The Year 1950 (182) Summary: In 1950, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the first of the Chronicles of Narnia, was published on October 16 in England and on November 7 in America. Jack was in the midst of writing the Chronicles, and Roger Lancelyn Green was reading them. Jack received his first letter from Joy Gresham on January 10. The Inklings were meeting regularly on Tuesdays, but no longer on Thursdays. Jack was receiving gifts of food, stationery, etc., during post-war rationing from Americans Edward Allen, Vera Mathews, Dr. Warfield Firor, and Mrs. Frank Jones (and perhaps Nathan Starr). Jack declined Firor’s invitation to come to America. On February 13, Jack debated Mr. Archibald Robertson of the Rationalist Press Association on “Grounds for Disbelief in God” at the Oxford Socratic Club. Anthony Flew spoke at the Socratic Club in May. In April, the Revd. Duff arrived to try to interest Jack in a home Mission called the Industrial Christian Fellowship, and Mrs. Moore was taken to a nursing home called Restholme. Jack began daily visits to see Mrs. Moore, which continued until her death in January 1951. Daphne Harwood contracted and then died from cancer. June (Jill) Flewett, one of the World War II evacuees who stayed at the Kilns, was married on September 4, which Warren attended. Grace Havard, wife of Humphrey Havard, died on September 10. The famous Firor Ham Feast took place at 7:30 p.m. at Jack’s rooms on September 19. In December Sheldon Vanauken began corresponding with Jack. Jack writes “What Are We to Make of Jesus Christ?” In this year Jack perhaps writes a poem on the shallowness of modern life, entitled “Finchley Avenue.” A second edition of Dymer is published in this year with a Preface by Jack.
