David Suchoff Family Resemblances: Ludwig Wittgenstein as a Jewish Philosopher The admonition to silence with which Wittgenstein ended the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1922) also marks the starting point for the emer- gence of his Jewish philosophical voice. Karl Kraus provides an instructive contrast: as a writer well known to Wittgenstein, Kraus’s outspoken and aggressive ridicule of “jüdeln” or “mauscheln” –the actual or alleged pronunciation of German with a Jewish or Yiddish accent – defined a “self-fashioning” of Jewish identity – from German and Hebrew in this case – that modeled false alternatives in philosophic terms.1 Kraus pre- sented Wittgenstein with an either-or choice between German and Jewish identity, while engaging in a witty but also unwitting illumination of the interplay between apparently exclusive alternatives that were linguistically influenced by the other’s voice. As Kraus became a touchstone for Ger- man Jewish writers from Franz Kafka to Walter Benjamin and Gershom Scholem, he also shed light on the situation that allowed Wittgenstein to develop his own non-essentialist notion of identity, as the term “family resemblance” emerged from his revaluation of the discourse around Judaism. This transition from The False Prison, as David Pears calls Wittgenstein’s move from the Tractatus to the Philosophical Investiga- tions, was also a transformation of the opposition between German and Jewish “identities,” and a recovery of the multiple differences from which such apparently stable entities continually draw in their interconnected forms of life.2 “I’ll teach you differences,” the line from King Lear that Wittgenstein mentioned to M. O’C. Drury as “not bad” as a “motto” for the Philo- sophical Investigations, in this way represents Wittgenstein’s assertion of a German Jewish philosophic position. -

Smith, Purdue University Gilles Deleuze and Michel Foucault are widely accepted to be central figures of post‐war French philosophy. Philosophers, cultural theorists, and others have devoted considerable effort to the critical examination of the work of each of these thinkers, but despite the strong biographical and philosophical connection between Foucault and Deleuze, very little has been done to explore the relationship between them. This special issue of Foucault Studies is the first collection of essays to address this critical deficit with a rigorous comparative discussion of the work of these two philosophers. Deleuze’s Course Lectures on Foucault In particular, this special issue is motivated by the recent (2011) online publication of Gilles Deleuze’s course lectures on Michel Foucault (1985‐86) at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (French National Library) in Paris. The BNF collected the available recordings of Deleuze’s seminar lectures at the University of Paris 8 and converted them into digital files. Needless to say, the task was a painstaking one, but the mp3 files have now been made accessible online through the Gallica search engine at the library.1 When Foucault died in 1984, Deleuze was so affected by the death of his friend, that he began lecturing and writing a book about Foucault’s philosophical corpus immediately. When asked why he wanted to write such a book, Deleuze was quite clear, “it marks an inner need of mine, my admiration for him, how I was moved by his death, and his unfinished work.”2 Deleuze’s desire for some kind of reconciliation with Foucault seems to have been a mutual one. -

In this contribution, Foucault’s and Agamben’s views on biopolitics are critically discussed. It argues that a crucial distinction exists between what can be called zo¯epolitics and biopolitics. Whereas the former takes the biological body as its object and is only indirectly geared towards the social body, the latter more directly has the social body as its object. Citizenship can be regarded a crucial form of population control that is both zo¯epoliticaland biopolitical in scope. It is zo¯epoliticalin that it distinguishes citizens from non-citizens. It is biopolitical in that it separates the life of ‘society’ from what is today, for instance, in discourse on immigrant integration, discursively articulated as the ‘outside society’. It is thus crucial to take seriously a discourse on what ‘society’ is, who belongs to it, and who resides ‘outside of society’, instead of taking the sovereign posi- tion of defining ‘society’ as a social body existing prior to its biopolitical articulation. The events of 9/11, the War on Terror, and the succes- sive decrees and acts authorizing fingerprinting, interrogation, and indefinite detention of suspects in terrorist activities, all testify to Agamben’s prophetic portrayal of contemporary politics in which the state of exception—normally a provisional attempt to deal with political exigen- cies—has become a permanent practice or paradigm of government. -

For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Financial loss of life: The homo as cer in the Third Reich Abstract Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine how the Aryanisation program of Nazi Germany created a financial loss of life for Jewish victims. This program led to further losses including political and actual life within the concentration camps and gas chambers. Design/methodology/approach This paper utilises Agamben's (1995, 2002, 2005) concepts of biopolitics, the homo sacer and the state of exception. I examine business histories of the firm The nI teressen Gemeinshaft der Deutschen Teerfarbenindustrie (the 'Community of Interest of the German Dyestuff ndusI try' known hereafter as 'I.G. Farben'), German legislation and other historical documents to construct a close reading of Aryanisation. The financial loss is explored as well as the ramifications for a loss of financial life interpreted through the 'silences' in accounting. Findings My analysis exposes the impact of restrictive financial legislation and the precarious position a loss of financial life engendered in Nazi Germany. Drawing attention to other losses suffered during the Holocaust beyond forced labour and the gas chamber uncovers a hidden layer of loss to the Holocaust victims. -
Foucault and the Politics of Rights

This includes Inot only foundational rights articulated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights but, more recently, rights for a clean environment and rights for nature itself.1 Such is the dominance of rights talk that they are sometimes billed as the only game in town2 or the ‘last utopia’3 for social and political struggle. Against this trend (what Louis Henkin terms ‘The Age of Rights’4) there is a growing critical literature that problematises the theoretical consistency and long-term efficacy of human rights.5 Further, scholars have examined whether human rights might perpetuate harm6 and crowd out more radical political projects that address the root of a particular political problem.7 It is from within this growing critical literature that I situate Ben Golder’s recent book, Foucault and the Politics of Rights. Golder is one of the most original and innovative legal theorists working in Australia. His books and numerous essays demonstrate a consistent commitment to scholarly rigour and reflection on contemporary political problems. Foucault As a Guide for Christian Faithfulness
Book reviews How God Acts was published collaboratively by Fortress Press (in its Theology and the Sciences series) and ATF Theology for an Australasian audience. It is a fair no less than challenging book, both in substance and in style. Typographical errors are few and even the decision to place refer- ences as endnotes mars the book but a little. How God Acts deserves a wide readership. Over the past decade a number of influential philosophers from the Continental tradition have turned to the letters of Paul, the Early Church Fathers, and Christian theology more broadly to examine the modern political subject, democratic governance and liberal economy. Recent works by Giorgio Agamben, Alain Badiou and Slavjo Žižek have contributed to a growing theopolitical literature and re-engagement of philosophy and theology. It is in this context that T & T Clark’s Philosophy and Theology series is situated. While including titles on Kant, Hegel, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche and their respective relations to theology, the series also addresses more recent contributions from Vattimo, Derrida, Agamben and Žižek. An important, yet perhaps uncomfortable, inclusion to this series is Michel Foucault. Foucault is an important inclusion due to his profound and sustained influence on contemporary political philosophy, sociology, critical theory and gradually, theology. However, Foucault is also an awkward inclu- sion. Unlike the philosophers already mentioned, Foucault did not directly engage theology or the Christian tradition for theological purposes. -
