The report begins with a discussion of .NSF'slaission in X-12 science education, followed by a review of the problems that limit the 0°1 of competent, interested science learners Up to the age of 18. The remainder of_the document is organimed as a series of_stand-alone essays, providing detailed discussions of ten opportunities for_NSF investment. These opportunities are'categorized as: (1) opportunities related to appropriate content and approaches;.(2) opportunities related to the community of professionals concerned with education in the sciences; and .(3) opportunities related to the infrastructure for education in the sciences. Each essay reviews the nature of the opportunity and rationale for NSF's involvement, NSF's programs in relation to this opportunity, and promising initiatives for NSF's investment. Appended is a table listing these promising initiatives according to the opportunity to_ which it relates, and showing estimated measures needed for each initiative over the next five years. BARUJ BENACERRAF October 29, 1920 - August 2, 2011 Elected to the NAS, 1972 Baruj Benacerraf was a remarkable scientist, educator, and administrator who had an immense impact on biology and medicine through his path-breaking scientific achieve- ments, his training of a generation of immunologists, and his leadership of biomedical research enterprises. Baruj was born in 1920 in Caracas, Venezuela, to Sephardic Jewish parents. His father, Abraham Benacerraf, was a successful businessman who had emigrated to Venezuela from Morocco. In Caracas the elder Benacerraf had great success in the textile importing business and in finance. Baruj’s mother, née Henriette Lasry, was raised in Algeria with a strong French cultural influence. When Baruj was five the family moved to Paris, where he received a By William E. Paul rigorous French education. He attended the Lycée Janson de Sailly, located in the 16th arrondissement and gener- ally considered one of the most prestigious lycées in Paris. His brother, Paul Benacerraf, born in 1931 in Paris, is a noted philosopher of mathematics and a professor at Princeton University, where he also served as provost of the university and chairman of the Depart- ment of Philosophy. In anticipation of the outbreak of the Second World War, the Benacerraf family returned to Venezuela in 1939, just before Baruj would have taken the final exams for his baccalauréat.

    SHATTERED STATES CATASTROPHE, COLLAPSE, AND DECLINE IN AMERICAN SCIENCE FICTION By Richard Charles Mulligan A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTORATE OF PHILOSOPHY American Studies Program 2012 ABSTRACT SHATTERED STATES CATASTROPHE, COLLAPSE, AND DECLINE IN AMERICAN SCIENCE FICTION By Richard Charles Mulligan This dissertation investigates how science fiction portrays the collapse of American society and its failure to recover in the wake of large-scale cataclysmic events in elation to the discourse of post-Cold War American hegemony. Although apocalyptic themes are as old as the genre itself, the analysis of post-apocalyptic SF has largely been tied to the Cold War and nuclear fears, or more recently to a shaken post-9/11 American psyche. However, this subgenre has a greater continuity that links those produced during the Cold War to recent stories; this analysis is critical of the cultural assumptions of a post-national future predicated on American-style democracy and liberal humanist values—both typical of mainstream SF. In the aftermath of cataclysm, the United States does not always recover and core values of American civic culture are among the casualties, something that counters the myth of American exceptionalism and “New World Order” representations of global hegemony. The argument for SF as a reflection of political and social discourse is not new. In the context of postcataclysm, SF is a minority discourse that remains subversive in its ability to talk about the unthinkable, whether that means the end of the world or just the post- American world.

Obituary The community of immunologists mourns the recent passing of Baruj Benacerraf, one of the great pioneers of our field. He was rewarded for his seminal studies demonstrating genetic control of the immune response (along with George Snell and Jean Dausset) with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1980. Baruj also made groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of the function of the reticular endothelial system, immunoglobulins, and the distinct characteristics of T and B lymphocyte recognition of antigen. In addition, Baruj was a remarkable leader who combined scientific insight with brilliant administrative skills. Benacerraf’s landmark scientific discovery came from his early experiments that revealed a genetic locus that controlled immune responses to simple antigens. He observed that some, but not all, randomly bred guinea pigs responded to antigens. This was the kind of equivocal observation that might be ignored by most scientists. He went on to show, through inbreeding experiments, that the ability to respond to antigen was determined by a genetic locus that acted in an autosomal dominant fashion. When these papers were published, George Snell, the eminent mouse geneticist, reportedly said that only a handful of scientists understood this work and fewer still appreciated its transformative nature.     Bollettino della Comunità Scientifica in Australasia Ambasciata d’Italia CANBERRA Agosto 2007 The extiction of the dinosaurs from a chemist’s point ot view: the abnormality of iridium at Gubbio, Italy and Woodside Creeck, New Zealand Rossana Untaru In the last 10 years, thanks to some books, films and cartoons, there has been a real explosion of ‘dinosaur- mania’. People of all ages from all over the world have been affected. What exactly happened 135 million years ago to make the dinosaurs vanish and devastate this planet? I have tried, with my thorough research, to review the scientific literature regarding the event that has triggered this mass extinction. The period is also know as the K-T boundary, and is located at the end of Cretaceous period to Tertiary in the geological time scale as seen in table 1. The 20% of survivors included salicaceous pelagic organisms (diatoms, radiolarians), limnetic organisms, terrestrial higher plants, terrestrial mammals mainly small carnivorous, insectivorous, and omnivorous vertebrates (Courtillot, 1999).
