Sciomyzidae Et Phaeomyiidae De La Manche. Premier
Sciomyzidae et Phaeomyiidae de la Manche Premier catalogue Parmi les 132 familles de diptères dénombrées en Europe, celle des Sciomyzidae n’évoque sans doute que peu de choses aux fidèles lecteurs de L’Argiope. Dans notre faune, aucun de ses représentants n’est véritablement remarquable, ni même connu sous un nom populaire. Non floricoles, ces insectes à faible mobilité sont pour le moins discrets, et seul un observateur attentif et patient saura alors les déceler dans leur milieu de reproduction, notamment du fait d’un comportement singulier : les sciomyzes Sepedon sphegea se tiennent habituellement dans la végétation basse la tête orientée vers le bas ! Dans le petit monde des diptéristes français, les sciomyzes ont en revanche été rendus populaires par une importante publication. Dernier numéro en date consacré à une famille de diptères dans la série Faune de France, est paru en 1989 les « Diptères Sciomyzidae Euro-méditerranéens ». Plus de cinquante ans après SÉGUY (1934), Jean-Claude VALA présente dans cet ouvrage un état des connaissances détaillé quant à la biologie générale de ces insectes et pour de nombreuses espèces. Plusieurs espèces de sciomyzes ont été notamment étudiées de près en raison de leur importance dans la lutte contre certaines maladies humaines (distomatoses). En effet, certains parasites trématodes connus chez l’homme ont un cycle de développement qui nécessite un hôte intermédiaire spécifique parmi les mollusques aquatiques. Parasitoïdes ou prédateurs des mollusques aquatiques et terrestres, les sciomyzes s’opposent alors efficacement au développement de ces parasites. Paradoxalement, alors que la publication de VALA , en français, rend l’étude des sciomyzes beaucoup plus abordable que pour d’autres familles de mouches, ce travail n’a pas semblé entraîner un engouement particulier de la part des entomologistes amateurs puisque peu d’études ou de catalogues ont vu le jour depuis cette parution. -

Entomol. 34(1): 148-157 (2005) ABSTRACT Polydm serice2Ls (Schaller) and Phyllobius oblongus (L.) are nonindigenous root- feeding weevils in northern hardwood forests of Wisconsin and Michigan. Detailed studies of adult host range, tree species preferences, and effects of food source on fecundity and longevity have not been conducted in North America P. sericeus and P. oblongus adults fed on leaves of all 11 deciduous tree species offered in no-choice assays, but amount of consumption varied among species. P. sericeus consumed more yellow birch (Betula alleghuniensis Britton), basswood (Tilia amaicanu L.), and ironwood [Ostrya virginianu (Miller) K. Koch] than maple (Acer spp.). Conversely, P. oblongus consumed more ironwood than poplar (Pgulw spp.) and yellow birch, with maple being interme- diate. Females ate 2.5 times as much as males. Mean frass production by P. saiceus was strongly correlated with foliage consumption among host tree species. In feeding choice assays, P. serim preferred yellow birch over ironwood, basswood, and aspen (Populustremuloides Michaux) .P. serim produced 29.93 + 1.43 eggsld when feeding on yellow birch compared with 2.04 + 0.36 eggsld on sugar maple (Am sacchrum Marshall). P. oblongus produced 4.32 2 1.45 eggsid when feeding on sugar maple compared with just 0.2 2 0.1 eggsid on yellow birch. Overall, total egg production for P. sericeus and P. obbngm averaged 830.1 rt 154.8 and 23.8 2 11.8 eggs, respectively, when feeding on their optimal host plants. -

A total of 46 species of Auchenorrhyncha are reported from the Maltese Islands. They belong to the following families: Cixiidae (3 species), Delphacidae (7 species), Meenoplidae (1 species), Dictyopharidae (1 species), Tettigometridae (2 species), Issidae (2 species), Cicadidae (1 species), Aphrophoridae (2 species) and Cicadellidae (27 species). Since the Auchenorrhyncha fauna of Malta was never studied as such, 40 species reported in this work represent new records for this country and of these, Tamaricella complicata, an eastern Mediterranean species, is confirmed for the European territory. One species, Balclutha brevis is an established alien associated with the invasive Fontain Grass, Pennisetum setaceum. From a biogeographical perspective, the most interesting species are represented by Falcidius ebejeri which is endemic to Malta and Tachycixius remanei, a sub-endemic species so far known only from Italy and Malta. Three species recorded from Malta in the Fauna Europaea database were not found during the present study. KEY WORDS. Malta, Mediterranean, Planthoppers, Leafhoppers, new records. INTRODUCTION The Auchenorrhyncha is represented by a large group of plant sap feeding insects commonly referred to as leafhoppers, planthoppers, cicadas, etc. They occur in all terrestrial ecosystems where plants are present. Some species can transmit plant pathogens (viruses, bacteria and phytoplasmas) and this is often a problem if the host-plant happens to be a cultivated plant. -

The larvae of P. pomaceus Gyllenhal, 1834, P. pyri (Linnaeus, 1758), P. virideaeris (Laicharting, 1781), and P viridicollis (Fabricius, 1792) are re-described, and the mature larvae of P. arborator (Herbst, 1797), P. argentatus (Linnaeus, 1758), P. maculicornis Germar, 1824, and P. roboretanus Gredler, 1882 are described for the first time. In P. viridearis only an unillustrated description was available. A key including other species of the genus Phyllobius with sufficient description is given. Entomol. 39(4): 1242Ð1248 (2010); DOI: 10.1603/EN09301 ABSTRACT A complex of invasive weevils that consume roots as larvae and foliage as adults have become established in northern hardwood forests in North America. We evaluated adults of the two most prominent species, Phyllobius oblongus and Polydrusus sericeus, for longevity, foliage consump- tion, and egg production on several putative hosts commonly found in this ecosystem. Adult pairs were monitored in no-choice laboratory assays for the duration of their lifespans on basswood, Tilia americana, ironwood, Ostrya virginiana, sugar maple, Acer saccharum, raspberry, Rubus spp., or leatherwood, Dirca palustris. Overall, P. sericeus lived more than twice as long as P. oblongus and lived longer on all hosts. P. sericeus consumed more total leaf area than P. oblongus on basswood, ironwood, and raspberry, but P. oblongus had a higher leaf consumption rate on sugar maple. Basswood was a very good host for P. sericeus. Leatherwood was not a suitable host for either weevil species. The higher longevity and fecundity of P. sericeus than P. oblongus did not agree with that expected from population data, in that the latter species is substantially more abundant. This likely reßects P. oblongus Õ superior performance on sugar maple, the dominant ßora in the study area. These data provide a basis for estimating the broader impacts of adult weevil feeding. Description of the problem the research should solve Xylella fastidiosa is a bacterial pathogen recently detected in association with olive trees showing rapid decline in Southern Italy. More recently, another strain of X. fastidiosa has been detected initially on a few ornamental plants (Polygala myrtifolia) in Corsica (France) but now on a greater number of hosts including Quercus suber (Cork Oak). Furthermore, several Coffea plants originated from Central and South America contaminated by X. fastidiosa have been intercepted by official services from European countries (Germany, The Netherlands, France, Switzerland and Italy) (EPPO 2012; Legendre et al., 2014; Bergsma et al., 2015). Strains of this bacterium are endemic in the Americas and cause economically important diseases including phony peach disease (PPD), plum leaf scald, Pierce's disease (PD) of grapes, citrus variegated chlorosis (CVC), and leaf scorch of almond, coffee, elm, oak, oleander, pear, and sycamore. Moreover, X. fastidiosa has been described on grape and almond in Iran (Amanifar et al., 2014) and many other agricultural, ornamental, forest and urban tree species are suspected in different countries to be susceptible to infection expressing leaf scorch and wilting. As of November 2015, 359 host species have been confirmed. Under natural conditions the bacterium is transmitted by xylem sap-feeding insects belonging to the order Hemiptera, sub-order Auchenorrhyncha. The transmission of X. fastidiosa by insects does not require a latent period and the bacteria are persistently transmitted.
