ORIGIN AND LIFESTYLE OF THE WILD PHEASANT Pheasants are wild gallinaceous birds all originating in Asia. One exception is the Congo peacock from Africa. (The pheasants also include game fowl and peacocks.) Each species has its own characteristics and life habits. There are species that live in tropical rain forests, but there are species that live in the mountains, on cold plains. This is something to take in account when housing our pheasants (with or without a night coop, with or without heating). Most species live in and around the mountains with a woodland vegetation, where they can find lots of berries, greens and seeds. It is of utmost importance to first consider the habits and living conditions of the species you want to keep. Only with proper housing will these beautiful birds show to their fullest, and reproduce. PHEASANTS IN AVIARIES In the past there were some "pheasant farms" which mainly bred the common pheasant (also known as ring-neck pheasant). The birds on these farms were bred for sport hunting. They were released en masse in the autumn in the fields and other areas to be shot for the sport. Some escaped from the hunters and that is why today we can see wild pheasants roam our fields and woods. These pheasants have also succeeded in reproducing themselves, even though they are not native birds. The birds are also kept for their colourful feathers. Each year I see Prince Carnival walk again with the beautiful feathers of the Reeves's Pheasant at his cocked hat. -

Vietnam Southern and Central Specialties 15th to 29th February 2020 (15 days) Trip Report Siamese Fireback by Simon Tan Trip report compiled by Tour Leader: Glen Valentine Trip Report – RBL Vietnam – Southern & Central Specialties 2020 2 Tour Summary Orange-breasted Trogon by Simon Tan We kicked off our 2020 Southern and Central Vietnam tour in the city of Hue, teeming with history and cultural significance and some wonderful restaurants, making it the perfect place to spend a few pre-tour days ambling around the city and its surrounds. Beginning our long journey south towards the hill forests surrounding the village of Mang Den, our first scheduled birding stop of the day produced the wanted target species in the form of White-faced Plover (a very distinctive, extremely localized, rare and often- split subspecies of Kentish Plover) along the beach adjacent to Bach Ma National Park. In the same area, we added our first of several Light-vented Bulbuls, a female Stejneger’s Stonechat and flocks of fly-over Grey-capped Greenfinches. Continuing west and then southwards, crossing over the Lo Xo Pass after a quick lunch-stop we had an hour or so to find the scarce and exceedingly range-restricted near-endemic Black-crowned Barwing. This good-looking and charismatic species was only discovered as recently as 1996 and is still only known from a tiny area in south-central Vietnam and southern Laos. We arrived in fine weather and were soon admiring several pairs and family groups of Black-collared Starling, as well as Scarlet Minivet, Streaked Spiderhunter, Black Bulbul, a wonderful perched Necklaced Barbet, a pair of Large Woodshrike and then finally, after a fair amount of searching in the now-degraded road- edge habitat, a glorious pair of Black-crowned Necklaced Barbet by Glen Valentine Rockjumper Birding Tours View more tours to Vietnam Trip Report – RBL Vietnam – Southern & Central Specialties 2020 3 Barwings. -

This month we welcome the arrival of volunteers Luke and Sarah from Cardiff University, they will be spending the following 6 months at DG to carry out their masters projects. Sarah will be looking at the diversity of frogs in over 70 different sites along the area of the Kinabatangan and comparing different habitats. Assisting Sarah for the first few days of her project was herpetologist Graeme Gillespie, who previous position was as Director of Conservation for Zoos Victoria. Luke, on the other hand, will be looking at one of our most enigmatic animals, the salt water crocodile. He will be carrying out a survey along a 100km stretch of the Kinabatangan, recording crocodile density and estimate body sizes, as well as analysing their surrounding habitat. Picture by Luke Evans Page 3 February 2011 StarkStark strikesstrikes againagain Primatologist Danica Stark has carried out an extensive primate survey along the Kinabatangan river bank, focusing primarily on proboscis monkeys and their group compositions. The survey has been successful, finding 6 of the 8 diurnal primates species that exist along the Kinabatangan, including orangutans, red leaf and silver leaf monkeys and numerous proboscis monkey groups. -

Darnell Collections and Research, Western Australian Museum, Kew Street, Welshpool, WA 6106 †June 2021 ____________________________________ This checklist covers Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the tropical eastern Indian Ocean and their surrounding seas. Christmas Island lies 290 km south of Java (Indonesia) and 1,400 km north-west of Western Australia. It is a small uplifted volcanic island (137 km² in area) and is administered by Western Australia as an External Territory of Australia. The Cocos (Keeling) Islands lie 970 km west of Christmas Island and 2,100 km north-west of Western Australia. They comprise two low-lying atolls, a large southern atoll (Cocos) consisting of about 26 islands around a horseshoe-shaped lagoon and a smaller North Keeling Island lying 25 km to the north. They cover a land area of about 14 km² and are also administered by Western Australia as an External Territory of Australia. The main aim of this work is to provide an up-to-date checklist of the birds of this region to include the large number of additional species that have been recorded on these islands since the publication of the Annotated Checklists of Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands in 2004 (Johnstone and Darnell Appendix A and B in: Handbook of Western Australian Birds Volume II) and the more recent review of the birds of Christmas Island (James and McAllan 2014 Australian Field Ornithology Suppl. 31). Thailand Highlights 14th to 26th November 2019 (13 days) Trip Report Siamese Fireback by Forrest Rowland Trip report compiled by Tour Leader: Forrest Rowland Trip Report – RBL Thailand - Highlights 2019 2 Tour Summary Thailand has been known as a top tourist destination for quite some time. Foreigners and Ex-pats flock there for the beautiful scenery, great infrastructure, and delicious cuisine among other cultural aspects. For birders, it has recently caught up to big names like Borneo and Malaysia, in terms of respect for the avian delights it holds for visitors. Our twelve-day Highlights Tour to Thailand set out to sample a bit of the best of every major habitat type in the country, with a slight focus on the lush montane forests that hold most of the country’s specialty bird species. The tour began in Bangkok, a bustling metropolis of winding narrow roads, flyovers, towering apartment buildings, and seemingly endless people. Despite the density and throng of humanity, many of the participants on the tour were able to enjoy a Crested Goshawk flight by Forrest Rowland lovely day’s visit to the Grand Palace and historic center of Bangkok, including a fun boat ride passing by several temples. A few early arrivals also had time to bird some of the urban park settings, even picking up a species or two we did not see on the Main Tour. For most, the tour began in earnest on November 15th, with our day tour of the salt pans, mudflats, wetlands, and mangroves of the famed Pak Thale Shore bird Project, and Laem Phak Bia mangroves. -

Bali Myna Bali Myna (Starling) by Dennis Braddy Tour Summary… This short but extremely productive and varied tour, covering a fine selection of hand-picked “top birding sites and destinations” throughout Western Indonesia was an immense success, once again and was an absolute joy to lead due to our enthusiastic, fun and very good-natured group. Our quick-fire, two-week tour of western Indonesia, kicked off in Denpasar, on the island of Bali where we all met up at the Harris Hotel for an introductory dinner and flight the following morning to the island of Flores, situated in Nusa Tenggara (The Lesser Sundas), a chain of islands running mostly east/west to the east of Wallace’s line, therefore having a distinctly Australasian flair about their avifauna. After arriving in the large, coastal town of Labuan Bajo, the gateway to the popular and famous Komodo Island, we boarded our minibus and began the windy drive east, up into the hills, towards our first biding locality of the tour, the forest reserve of Puarlolo. This small reserve was initially set aside to protect the endemic and highly threatened Flores Monarch that was only discovered from this area as recently as 1971 and is still only known from a few scattered localities in the sub-montane forest on Flores. -

HYBRIDIZATION & ZOOGEOGRAPHIC PATTERNS IN PHEASANTS PAUL A. JOHNSGARD The purpose of this paper is to infonn members of the W.P.A. of an unusual scientific use of the extent and significance of hybridization among pheasants (tribe Phasianini in the proposed classification of Johnsgard~ 1973). This has occasionally occurred naturally, as for example between such locally sympatric species pairs as the kalij (Lophura leucol11elana) and the silver pheasant (L. nycthelnera), but usually occurs "'accidentally" in captive birds, especially in the absence of conspecific mates. Rarely has it been specifically planned for scientific purposes, such as for obtaining genetic, morphological, or biochemical information on hybrid haemoglobins (Brush. 1967), trans ferins (Crozier, 1967), or immunoelectrophoretic comparisons of blood sera (Sato, Ishi and HiraI, 1967). The literature has been summarized by Gray (1958), Delacour (1977), and Rutgers and Norris (1970). Some of these alleged hybrids, especially those not involving other Galliformes, were inadequately doculnented, and in a few cases such as a supposed hybrid between domestic fowl (Gallus gal/us) and the lyrebird (Menura novaehollandiae) can be discounted. -

Participants were treated to an amazing number of star birds that included the critically endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper, Mountain Bamboo Partridge, Mrs Hume’s and Silver Pheasants, Siamese Fireback, Green Peafowl, Buffy Fish Owl, Gould’s and Blyth’s Frogmouths, the mythical Coral-billed Ground Cuckoo, Gurney’s, Malayan Banded, Blue, Rusty-naped and Mangrove Pittas, Ratchet-tailed Treepie, Slaty-bellied Tesia, Large, White-browed and Rusty-cheeked Scimitar Babblers, Limestone, Streaked, and Pygmy Wren-Babblers, Spot- breasted Laughingthrush, Scarlet-faced Liocichla, Grey-headed and Spot-breasted Parrotbills, Giant Nuthatch, Heart-spotted, White-bellied and Great Slaty Woodpeckers, Black-backed Forktail, Mrs Gould’s Sunbird, Malayan Night Heron and Nicobar Pigeon – to name just some of the many fantastic highlights! The tour in detail: Heading out early from the capital, Bangkok, through the bustling metropolis, we journeyed south towards the Gulf of Thailand.
