Please keep all those sufering as a consequence of these disasters in your prayers Page 1: From the Principal Throughout the coming weeks, the College community will engage in various fundraising events and awareness building actvites with students focusing on Page 2: Alumni News CARITAS and Lent. These actvites are in support of those less fortunate than us. Modern History News Laureta Graham Please be generous with your response. Our patron, Saint Mary MacKillop is a Principal great symbol of the search for spirituality and gospel values in our tme. Hers was a Page 3: P&F Assoc. News deep commitment to the God who calls us to justce and compassion, and to those who have been pushed to the edges of society. Canteen Corner Chaplain's Chat Congratulatons to our staf who organised our College Opening Mass, it was certainly an outstanding event; a true celebraton of our unity as a complete 7 to 12 College. We congratulate all students Upcoming Events for their partcipaton and true presence. Our grattude also extends to Catholic Educaton Ofce Page 4: Community News Representatves who atended. We extend our grattude to Fr Tom, Fr Luis and Bishop Charles who lead the celebraton. Thank you to all parents who have atended Parent Informaton Evenings over the last few weeks, it is important to remember staf at MacKillop will always have tme for parents and are only a phone call or an email away. It is best to contact the class teacher or Home form teacher in the frst instance. Teachers will be happy to arrange a visit at a tme suitable to all concerned. We are notcing that some students are coming to school without books, pens and equipment for class. Please let us know if you are having difculty in this area. Students need to be equipped and ready to learn. It is the tme of year where senior students are considering their part tme jobs and how many hours they should commit to this as opposed to study and relaxaton. Part tme positons ofer considerable benefts other than money; however, hours in excess of 12 hours per week cut signifcantly into tme needed to complete studies successfully and the rest necessary to turn up on tme ready for classroom lessons. Please have a conversaton with your son/daughters who are of work ready age. With every blessing. Yours sincerely, Lauretta Graham Principal “Never see a need without trying to do something abouti it” St. Mary MacKillop May your journey always be flled with blessings and may the life of Saint Mary MacKillop ignite in you the fames of faith and service 1 MacKillop News Alumni News Abisekh Gets 2018 Dux Afer our 2019 Opening Mass, led by Bishop Charles, was the announcement of our 2018 Year 12 Dux, which went to Abisekh Pulletkurthi. Congratulatons Abisekh on this well-earnt achievement, and we wish you every success in your future! Well Done Rizal Congratulatons Rizal Fenwick on getng into medicine! Rizal came over from Indonesia, learning English afer he arrived, and started at MacKillop in Year 11 in 2017, graduatng last year. An extract from a leter to the College from his wonderful mum, Erna: "With the availability to start year 11 in 2017 at MacKillop Catholic College, the great support was immediately felt. The constant guidance allowed Rizal to really focus and start making his goal a reality. Fast forward to the completon of year 12 with Rizal feeling he had done his best, it was tme to wait to see if it was enough to receive his frst preference to gain entry to CDU. Well it gives me great pleasure to tell his story - that if there is a will there is a way. So in just over 2 years, with very limited English, he has graduated with the third highest ATAR at the College and has been ofered a positon at CDU to study Medicine. With a special thanks to a few close friends, MacKillop and its support network, you have proven dreams can come true and persistence will prevail." • A'court, BILL (West Adelaide)
A A’COURT, BILL (West Adelaide): Acourt was placed on Oliver and to keep this man from taking his sensational marks gives a man plenty to do. Acourt did not let him do too much, and played a good game beside.1 Father of star West Adelaide ruckman of the 1950s Fred A’Court (profiled below), Bill A’Court was a strong defender who also played with West. He debuted with the club in 1909, and was a key member that same year of its winning grand final team against Port Adelaide. He went on to play in the premiership sides of 1911 and 1912 as well. From 1909 to 1915 A’Court played 83 SAFL games and kicked four goals. A’COURT, FRED (West Adelaide): Fred A’Court was a stalwart of West Adelaide sides during the club’s nightmare decade of the 1950s, when four grand finals were contested without success, all against Port Adelaide. He commenced with West in 1949, and over the ensuing 11 seasons played a total of 159 league games and kicked 110 goals. In January 1954, A’Court applied for a clearance to VFL club Richmond, claiming that, if he made the move, he would be £15 a week better off financially, but West Adelaide refused the application and he continued to play for the Blood and Tars for the remainder of his career. A tough, tireless and talented ruckman, A’Court - popularly known as ‘Boof’ - represented South Australia eight times, kicking 10 goals. AAMODT, COLIN (North Adelaide): In a brainy display of football Aamodt showed all the fleetness of foot that enabled him to run a place in a Stawell Gift.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Monash University Research Repository THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE ROSS BOOTH DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS MONASH UNIVERSITY CLAYTON, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA, 3800 Ph: +61 3 99052434 Fax: +61 3 99055476 Email: [email protected] 1 ABSTRACT This paper begins with a brief review of the evolution of the unique brand of Australian football and the development of a fully-professional and national Australian Football League (AFL) comprising 16 clubs from the Victorian Football League (VFL) formed in 1897. Analysis of clubs’ finances and stated objectives suggest that AFL clubs are win-maximisers (subject to breaking even financially) rather than profit maximisers. The win-maximising objective stems from the nature of club ownership. Of the 16 clubs, ten are owned by their members, one is shareholder-owned, four are owned by their respective state football Commissions and one licence is held by the AFL. The objectives of the league and the changes in its governance are also discussed. The history of labour market devices and revenue sharing rules the VFL/AFL has used to try to increase competitive balance is outlined. Six different periods between 1897 and 2003 are identified and the different levels of competitive balance are calculated for each year and then matched against the devices and rules used in each period. It is suggested that the high levels of competitive balance achieved in the VFL/AFL in the most 2 recent period could well be the result of the introduction of both a national player draft and team salary cap.
