7 PRESENTATION OF THE 25 GOVERNOR’S AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE

THE ARTIST: Mandi E. Caskey (B. 1993, Lima OH) Moved to Columbus in 2012 and attended CCAD for two years before dropping out of school. She started creating illegal street art, and became nationally recognized as “Birdy”. In 2014, Caskey started her own business, working as a full time painter, muralist, and community activist. That summer she helped revamp the Independents Fes- tival by assembling a group of artists to create massive standing mural installations, which began a tradition for following years. Caskey has been involved in Urban Scrawl, Independents Festival, Art for Life and other art related events over the last 3 years. In 2016 Caskey began painting a 28 foot mural, in the Rhodes State office Tower, as donation to the state of Ohio. That year Caskey was recognized for her public art installations, and her involvement with the change in how street art and graffiti are seen by the government. She was awarded a People to Watch award and was placed on the top 10 list of artists in Columbus. The opening of the new mural in the Rhodes Tower received national coverage and generated interest in how art and government can intertwine. Becoming a key player in the way people view public art, Caskey continues to create both murals and gallery work, as she prepares for a solo show in 2018.

THE AWARDS: Growing up Caskey was fascinated with Art History and studied a great deal about the masters of fine art. These awards are a reflection of one of her inspirations growing up. “The Garden of Earthly Delights,” by Hieronymus Bosch, is a fascinating painting in which every detail creates a piece of the larger story. Caskey has taken individual compositions from the painting and isolated them to create an entirely different narrative. She believes it is important for young artists to really understand the importance of art history, and to use that knowledge in the development of their own work.

THE OHIO GOVERNOR'S YOUTH ART EXHIBITION

The Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition, now in its forty-seventh year, is dedicated to the edu- cational and artistic advancement of our talented young people in the state of Ohio. The Exhibi- tion is open to all of Ohio’s 1,052 high schools, both public and private, chartered by the State of Ohio Department of Education. Our purpose is to provide all budding young artists of the state with opportunities to advance their talent, whether that be through scholarships or simply experi- encing the process of entering their work in a competition. The Exhibition is a valuable incentive for our young people; it encourages an appreciation for the arts throughout Ohio and reflects the fine quality of art instruction and talent that exist in our state.

The process of selecting art works for the State Exhibition begins on a regional level. The state is divided into 15 regional locations, with high school students in each region invited to enter work in that regional judging. Each region has a designated Regional Director, who is respon- sible for choosing the judges for his or her region and arranging specifics of the event.

This state judging takes place in Columbus; however, the judges for this level of competition are chosen from all over the country and are generally professional artists themselves, college level instructors, or both.

From the more than 10,800 regional entries from the 15 regions, approximately 2,500 are se- lected to enter the state judging. State jurors then select 300 for the actual Exhibition, with 25 of the 300 chosen to receive the Governor’s Award of Excellence. Scholarships are offered to seniors by more than 30 universities and colleges of art. The selection of students to be offered scholarships is left strictly up to those institutions who offer them. The Governor’s Exhibition is merely a vehicle through which schools and students are brought together.

The Exhibition opens at the James A. Rhodes State Office Tower, across from the state capitol, in April and closes near the end of May. An awards ceremony is held at the Columbus Ath- enaeum in the students’ honor prior to the opening. The attendance at the awards ceremony is over 700 and the Exhibition attendance is at least 1,200. At the Exhibition awards ceremony, students receive Awards of Excellence and scholarship awards.
