Wandsworth Bridge SW18 – Works continue on the refurbishment of Wandsworth Bridge. The on footway cycle tracks are currently closed in order for pedestrians to use, due to the hoarding encroaching onto the footways both sides. There is a temporary, on carriageway, northbound cycle lane and the southbound bus lane has been widened to facilitate buses and cycles. The scope of work has recently been increased due to some additional critical works being identified on the structure and as a result the programme has been extended. Expected completion date end of Feb 2022. Contact: Sam Emmett 0208 871 6668. Hammersmith Bridge is closed indefinitely due to safety concerns. ADVANCED WARNING Garratt Lane SW18 will have the following restrictions in place between 07:00 and 22:00 on the days specified. - Southbound directional closure from the junction with Wandsworth High Street to the junction with Courthouse Way, Saturday and Sunday only (16th and 17th October). Old York Road SW18 will be closed from the junction with Ferrier Street to the entrance of the old Homebase for refurbishment works to the railway bridge. SOCIAL DISTANCING MEASURES To aid with social distancing a number of road closures have been implemented in the borough as follows: Old York Road SW18 is closed from Swandon Way to Ferrier Street until further notice. Northcote Road SW11 will be closed from the junction with Battersea Rise to the junction with Broomwood Road every weekend until further notice. WATER LEAKS AND GAS ESCAPES Please do not assume that someone else has phoned it in. Please do not report these to the Council. The Network Management team actively monitors works on the public highway and works closely with utility companies to minimise disruption as much as possible as well as looking for opportunities to work collaboratively.     The Crystal Palace The Crystal Palace was a cast-iron and plate-glass structure originally The Crystal Palace built in Hyde Park, London, to house the Great Exhibition of 1851. More than 14,000 exhibitors from around the world gathered in its 990,000-square-foot (92,000 m2) exhibition space to display examples of technology developed in the Industrial Revolution. Designed by Joseph Paxton, the Great Exhibition building was 1,851 feet (564 m) long, with an interior height of 128 feet (39 m).[1] The invention of the cast plate glass method in 1848 made possible the production of large sheets of cheap but strong glass, and its use in the Crystal Palace created a structure with the greatest area of glass ever seen in a building and astonished visitors with its clear walls and ceilings that did not require interior lights.     Wandsworth Council Parks time line There are many large green open places in south west London. The commons of Barnes, Battersea, Clapham, Putney, Streatham, Tooting, Wandsworth and Wimbledon date from ‘time immemorial’. Though largely comprising the wastes or heathland of a parish, the commons were integral to mediaeval land settlements and were owned by lords of the manors. As London developed during the nineteenth century the land was increasingly developed for housing. Several legal battles took place to defend the commons as open land. Garratt Green had long been ‘defended’ by the infamous Mayors of Garratt elections. Listed below are the green places in the Borough of Wandsworth that are managed by Wandsworth Parks Service. Health was a matter of fresh air, exercise and diet, rather than one of medical resources. 1885 Battersea Vestry created Christchurch Gardens as ‘an outdoor drawing room’. The shelter and memorial were added after 1945. 1886 Waterman’s Green was created by the Metropolitan Board of Works as part of the approach to the new Putney Bridge when it was rebuilt in stone. It was not publicly accessible. 1888 Battersea Vestry owned the parish wharf and created Vicarage Gardens as a promenade, complete with ornamental urns on plinths along the river wall. During 1990s it was included in flood defence schemes. 1903 Leader’s Gardens and Coronation Gardens were created as public parks by private donation from two wealthy local individuals.
