Plant Profile Pictur Botanical Name: Camellia japonica; Camellia sasanqua Common Name: Japanese Camellia Sasanqua camellia e FAMILY NAME: or Drawing THEACEAE Species and cultivars of special interest: Camellia sinensis Origin: Most are native to China with a small percentage native to Japan. Availability: Flowering Season: Autumn, Winter, Spring Foliage Characteristics: The leaves are dark, glossy green, rounded shaped with a paler reverse. Simple leaves with alternate arrangement. Floral Characteristics: Camellia japonica & Sasanqua camellia bloom with fragrant, colourful, single or double flowers. Flowers have a very short lifespan once cut so for this reason are rarely used in floristry. The flowers bloom in a variety of colours, including red, pink, yellow and white. Special features and characteristics of special interest: Camellia japonica & Sasanqua camellia with glossy foliage and large showy flowers grow into bushy shrubs, eventually reaching heights of around 3 metres. Most need protection from the hot Summer sun, and a position where they receive filtered light or early morning sun and afternoon shade. Camellia oil, which is odourless and colourless, is obtained by drying, crushing, and expressing the seeds. For more than three hundred years, it has been used by the Japanese to keep their hair healthy and beautiful. When applied to the skin, it is smooth and spreads well. Maintenance, Cultural requirements and Post Harvest Treatments: If you prune camellias, do so after flowering. Pruning during other times of the year can remove buds for the next blooming cycle. Camellias like warmth, but will not tolerate locations where they receive full sunlight. Pest and Diseases: They have few disease problems, occasionally virus may result in leaf discoloration but will not affect flowering. If drainage is poor root rot can occur. Fairly pest and disease resistant but can be susceptible to mites and scale if the plant is under stress. Use In Floristry: Camellia is mostly used in the floral industry for it’s foliage. Camellia arrangements are elegant and can be used for almost any kind of occasion. They have a very boheme look, so they can easily be used in wedding arrangements and bouquets. Customer advice: Avoid placing your cut flowers in a sunny spot or near heat sources. Warm temperatures will wilt flowers more quickly than cooler temperatures. Replace water every day as they are very thirsty flowers. .
