Press Release L.A. Reid, Chairman of Epic Records, to Keynote at Midem 2017 with 25 Years at the Heart of the Business, Music In PRESS RELEASE L.A. REID, CHAIRMAN OF EPIC RECORDS, TO KEYNOTE AT MIDEM 2017 WITH 25 YEARS AT THE HEART OF THE BUSINESS, MUSIC INDUSTRY PIONEER SHARES HIS VISION OF THE FUTURE Paris, November 16, 2016 – L.A. Reid, Chairman and CEO of Epic Records, is the first confirmed keynote speaker for the 51st edition of Midem. Midem, the leading industry event for the international music ecosystem, takes place in Cannes, France, from 6-9 June 2017. The over–arching theme for next year’s conference programme is, “A New Golden Age for the Music Industry? Get Ready to Embrace It!” Reid has been shaping the music scene for more than 25 years. As well as being Chairman and CEO of Epic Records, he is a Grammy Award-winning musician, songwriter, and producer in his own right, and is now a New York Times bestselling author for his memoir, “Sing to Me: My Story of Making Music, Finding Magic, and Searching for Who's Next”. He is the man behind the success of some of today’s biggest stars, including Justin Bieber, Meghan Trainor, Future, Fifth Harmony, Outkast, Pink, Rihanna and Mariah Carey, to name a few. His keynote at Midem will allow Reid to share some incredible stories about his career and his experience working with many top international artists. As the head of LaFace Records, Reid broke ground for African American pop artists and helped establish the now-famous music scene in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2000, Reid moved to New York to helm Arista Records, where he discovered Avril Lavigne and worked with such established superstars as Carlos Santana, Aretha Franklin, and Whitney Houston. In 2004, he moved to the Island Def Jam Music Group as Chairman and CEO, where he discovered and developed Rihanna, Justin Bieber, The Killers, Kanye West, and many more. In 2011, he joined Epic Records as Chairman and CEO, and acted as a judge on “The X Factor” through 2013. Today, Epic is topping the charts with acts like DJ Khaled, Future, Travis Scott, Meghan Trainor, Fifth Harmony, Zara Larsson, Jidenna, and the KONGOS. “I’m thrilled to be back at Midem after being a member of the Midem Artist Accelerator artistic committee in 2015, and I’m excited at the prospect of sharing the experience of more than 25 years in the music business with the Midem audience. It’s also a chance to look to the future, as Midem highlights this year the immense opportunities brought by the development of streaming in today’s global music marketplace, thus creating a New Golden Era for the music industry to thrive,” said Reid. “It’s a great pleasure to welcome L.A. Reid as the first keynote speaker announced for Midem 2017, as the event is the essential platform for international labels and thought leaders. west coast music Midnight Special Please find attached the Midnight Special song list for your review. SPECIAL DANCES for Weddings: Please note that we will need your special dance requests, (I.E. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son Dance etc) FOUR WEEKS in advance prior to your event so that we can confirm that the band will be able to perform the song(s) and that we are able to locate sheet music. In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is need- ed, this gives us the time needed to properly prepare the music and learn the material. Clients are not obligated to send in a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and avoided. Recently, we’ve noticed in increase in cli- ents customizing what the band plays and doesn’t play with very specific detail. If you de- sire the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we ask for a minimum of 100 requests. We want you to keep in mind that the band is quite good at reading the room and choosing songs that best connect with your guests. The more specific/selective you are, know that there is greater chance of losing certain song medleys, mashups, or newly released material the band has.

  • The Outkast Class
    R. Bradley OutKast Class Syllabus OutKast Course Description and Objectives Pre-requisite: ENGL1102 Preferred Pre-requisites: ENGL2300, AADS1102 In 1995, Atlanta, GA duo OutKast attended the Source Hip Hop Awards where they won the award for Best New Duo. Mostly attended by bi-coastal rappers and hip hop enthusiasts, OutKast was booed off the stage. OutKast member Andre Benjamin, clearly frustrated, emphatically declared what is now known as the rallying cry for young black southerners: “the south got something to say.” For this course, we will use OutKast’s body of work as a case study questioning how we recognize race and identity in the American south after the Civil Rights Movement. Using a variety of post-Civil Rights era texts including film, fiction, criticism, and music, students will interrogate OutKast’s music as the foundation of what the instructor theorizes as “the hip hop south,” the southern black social-cultural landscape in place over the last 25 years. Objectives 1. To develop and utilize a multidisciplinary critical framework to successfully engage with conversations revolving around contemporary identity politics and (southern) popular culture 2. To challenge students to engage with unfamiliar texts, cultural expressions, and language in order to learn how to be socially and culturally sensitive and aware of modes of expression outside of their own experiences. 3. To develop research and writing skills to create and/or improve one’s scholarly voice and others via the following assignments: • Critical Listening Journals • Creative or Critical Final Project **Explicit Content Statement (courtesy of Dr. Treva B. Lindsey)** Over the course of the semester students will Be introduced to texts that may Be explicit in nature (i.e.

  • The Life & Rhymes of Jay-Z, an Historical Biography
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 Omékongo Dibinga, Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Barbara Finkelstein, Professor Emerita, University of Maryland College of Education. Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the life and ideas of Jay-Z. It is an effort to illuminate the ways in which he managed the vicissitudes of life as they were inscribed in the political, economic cultural, social contexts and message systems of the worlds which he inhabited: the social ideas of class struggle, the fact of black youth disempowerment, educational disenfranchisement, entrepreneurial possibility, and the struggle of families to buffer their children from the horrors of life on the streets. Jay-Z was born into a society in flux in 1969. By the time Jay-Z reached his 20s, he saw the art form he came to love at the age of 9—hip hop— become a vehicle for upward mobility and the acquisition of great wealth through the sale of multiplatinum albums, massive record deal signings, and the omnipresence of hip-hop culture on radio and television. In short, Jay-Z lived at a time where, if he could survive his turbulent environment, he could take advantage of new terrains of possibility. This dissertation seeks to shed light on the life and development of Jay-Z during a time of great challenge and change in America and beyond. THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 An historical biography: 1969-2004 by Omékongo Dibinga Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2015 Advisory Committee: Professor Barbara Finkelstein, Chair Professor Steve Klees Professor Robert Croninger Professor Derrick Alridge Professor Hoda Mahmoudi © Copyright by Omékongo Dibinga 2015 Acknowledgments I would first like to thank God for making life possible and bringing me to this point in my life.

  • The Justice in Policing Act of 2020 in the U.S
June 23, 2020 Honorable Nancy Pelosi Speaker of the House 1236 Longworth House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 Honorable Kevin McCarthy Republican Leader 2468 Rayburn House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 Dear Speaker Pelosi and Leader McCarthy: Since the killing of George Floyd just one month ago, our country has seen protests grow, attitudes shift, and calls for change intensify. We in the music and entertainment communities believe that Black lives matter and have long decried the injustices endured by generations of Black citizens. We are more determined than ever to push for federal, state, and local law enforcement programs that truly serve their communities. Accordingly, we are grateful for movement of the Justice in Policing Act of 2020 in the U.S. House of Representatives and urge its quick passage. The Justice in Policing Act is not about marginal change; it takes bold steps that will make a real, positive difference for law enforcement and the communities they serve. We celebrate the long- overdue rejection of qualified immunity, emphasizing that law enforcement officers themselves are not above the law – that bad cops must be held accountable and victims must have recourse. We applaud the provisions to ban chokeholds and no-knock warrants, to establish a national police misconduct registry, to collect data and improve investigations into police misconduct, to promote de-escalation practices, to establish comprehensive training programs, and to update and enhance standards and practices. This legislation will not only promote justice; it will establish a culture of responsibility, fairness, and respect deserving of the badge. Our communities and nation look to you to take a stand in this extraordinary moment and we respectfully ask that you vote YES on the Justice in Policing Act of 2020.
