Taxonomy, Geographic Distribution, Conservation and Species Boundaries in Calydorea Azurea Group (Iridaceae: Tigridieae)1 Introd

For the complementation of the data were examined collections deposited in the principal herbaria of southern Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, and were analyzed image of types and others collections available. All studied species were photographed and its populations geo-referenced. It are recognized six species: C. alba Roitman & Castillo, C. azurea, C. charruana Deble, C. luteola (Klatt) Baker, C. minima Roitman & Castillo and C. riograndensis Deble. C. azurea is cited for Brazil, C. charruana is added to Argentinian flora, C. luteola has its taxonomic delimitation established, and its occurrence is extended up to the northern Uruguay. The geographic distribution of C. riograndensis is reestablished, in view of three collections mentioned in the protologue are identified as belonging at others species. All species studied are described, illustrated through of photos, being presented data about geographic distribution, ecology and conservation. There has been much recent investigation and re-interpretation of evidence regarding the upper-level taxonomy of the Liliales, with strong suggestions that the broad Liliaceae recognized by Cronquist (1981) is artificial and polyphyletic. Cronquist (1993) himself concurs, at least to a degree: "we still await a comprehensive reorganization of the lilies into several families more comparable to other recognized families of angiosperms." Dahlgren & Clifford (1982) and Dahlgren, Clifford, & Yeo (1985) synthesized an early phase in the modern revolution of monocot taxonomy. Since then, additional research, especially molecular (Duvall et al. 1993, Chase et al. 1993, Bogler & Simpson 1995, and many others), has strongly validated the general lines (and many details) of Dahlgren's arrangement. The most recent synthesis (Kubitzki 1998a) is followed as the basis for familial and generic taxonomy of the lilies and their relatives (see summary below). References: Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (1998, 2003); Tamura in Kubitzki (1998a). Our “liliaceous” genera (members of orders placed in the Lilianae) are therefore divided as shown below, largely following Kubitzki (1998a) and some more recent molecular analyses. A consensus classification is pro- posed here, based on recent molecular phylogenetic studies, morphological and cytogenetic variation, and accounting for secondary criteria of classification, such as nomenclatural stability. Using the latest sutribal classification of Hippeastreae (Hippeastrinae and Traubiinae) as a foundation, we propose the recognition of six genera, namely Eremolirion gen. nov., Hippeastrum, Phycella s.l., Rhodolirium s.str., Traubia, and Zephyranthes s.l. A subgeneric classification is suggested for Hippeastrum and Zephyranthes to denote putative subclades. -

Northern Chile Deserts & Volcanoes A Greentours Trip Report 9th – 24th November 2015 Led by Chris Gardner Day 1 & 2 To Copiapo I’d arrived in Chile a day earlier to drive up to Copiapo where I met the group and we transferred to our cosy hotel in the town in time for dinner. Day 3 11th November Pan de Azucar The grey cloud gradually gave way to bluer skies as we neared the park having driven along the coast road past several little fishing towns that nestled in rocky bays. Just outside the park proper we stopped for an area of rocky bluffs where multi-headed domes of Copiapoa cineracscens were scattered about along with a few Cristaria sp as a Neotropical Cormorant fishes in the surf that lashed the rocks. We moved onto to an amazing area of cacti with thousands of the same species that dominated an area of gentle slopes forming large domes clusters of heads. After calling in at the park HQ we moved on stopping several times for a succession of interesting desert plants including various Nolana spp., Polyachyrus fuscus with pink spherical inflorescences and orangey Heliotropum linearifolium. By now it was lunchtime and we enjoyed a roadside picnic before exploring once again. This time is was for a remarkable population of Copiapoa cinera ssp. alba which occurred in their hundreds, with a multitude of different shapes and sizes and including at least twenty with little yellow flowers. Further exploration took us across the park to an area with odd pointed domes of Polyachyurus fuscus. -

RESUMEN Este estudio entrega información respecto de la historia natural de Calydorea xiphioides (Iridaceae), geófita endémica de Chile, que integra el grupo de las monocotiledóneas petaloides de Chile Central y clasificada como una especie vulnerable a la extinción. Para llevar cabo este estudio se eligieron poblaciones ubicadas en la zona costera de la Región del Maule, cercanas a la localidad de Llico. Una zona con clima de tipo mediterráneo, con influencia marítima, con una vegetación de matorrales y bosques esclerofilos, sustituidos con frecuencia por plantaciones de pino o invadidos por Acacia dealbata, con un estrato herbáceo con una alta diversidad específica. Se estudia principalmente el ciclo vital, mediante estudios fenológicos a través del año. Calydorea xiphioides florece en primavera y fructifica en verano para luego entrar en un receso, luego por las primeras lluvias dan inicio la etapa de crecimiento vegetativo. Se estudió la biología reproductiva mediante el método de reproducción vegetativa artificial. Seccionamiento del bulbo en dos, verificando una baja tasa de multiplicación. Finalmente se aportan antecedentes referentes a su utilización ornamental y paisajística. Amaryllidaceae species from the subfamily Amaryllidoideae can biosynthesize alkaloids with important physiological effects. Rhodophiala C. Presl is one of the native genera of Amaryllidoideae of Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Brazil. However, despite the diversity of this genus in Chile, their alkaloids have only been studied previously in one species of this country. The present work aims to analyze the alkaloid profi les and chemotaxonomically compare three other Chilean species of Rhodophiala: Rhodophiala bagnoldii (Herb.) Traub, Rhodophiala pratensis (Poepp.) Traub and Rhodophiala volckmannii Phil. Bulb extracts were analyzed by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and alkaloids were characterized according to retention time and fragmentation pattern. The skeleton type alkaloids detected were lycorine, crinine, galanthamine, homolycorine, tazettine and montanine. All analyzed species showed different alkaloid profi les, indicating these compounds can be used as a chemotaxonomic tool. Furthermore, the alkaloid types detected in this genus have multiple reported biological properties and these species can constitute new sources of important medicinal products. -

Algunos de sus representantes son cultivados como ornamentales, tales como Amaryllis L., Crinus L., Galanthus L., Leucojum L., Lycoris Herb. y Narcissus L. En Chile, especies de los géneros Placea Miers, Phycella Lindl. y Rhodophiala C.Presl han llamado la atención de investigadores en floricultura, ya que sus vistosas flores representan un potencial ornamental tanto para ser utilizadas como plantas de jardín o de macetas. Sin embargo, para cualquier programa de investigación de biotecnológica vegetal aplicada, es necesaria la identificación del material vegetal que se está utilizando. Esto, en Amaryllidaceae chilenas es un desafío, puesto que la clasificación de los géneros y especies, que se ha hecho en base caracteres morfológicos tradicionales, es aún controvertida, dado por complejas variación morfológica observadas en géneros tales como Hippeastrum Herb., Phycella Lindl. Y Rhodophiala C.Presl, lo que se traduce en caracteres homoplásicos, o bien, en la supresión de la variación fenotípica o canalización. Mediante el uso de secuencias ITS, obtenidas desde material vegetal de 13 especies chilenas pertenecientes a los géneros Phycella Lindl., Rhodophiala C.Presl, Rhodolirium Phil. Famatina Ravenna y Miltinea (Ravenna) Ravenna. Se realizó un análisis filogenético de máxima parsimonia, con apoyo bootstrap, y posteriormente se combinó este análisis molecular con características morfológicas y estudios citológicos para proponer una clasificación mas robusta, predictiva, y consistente de estos 5 géneros nativos de Amaryllidaceae de Chile. -

CASTILLO2 Abstract: Calydorea alba is described from wet grasslands of northern Uruguay. The new species resembles Calydorea azurea, but can be easily distinguished by the smaller white flowers (3.2-3.6 cm wide vs. 4.4-5.3 cm wide), and linear subulate not truncate, style branches. Key words: Iridaceae, Tigridieae, Calydorea, Uruguay. Resumen: Calydorea alba (Iridaceae: Tigridieae), una nueva especie de Uruguay. Se descri- be Calydorea alba proveniente de pastizales húmedos del norte de Uruguay. Esta nueva especie se asemeja a Calydorea azurea, pero puede ser fácilmente distinguida por sus flores blancas más pequeñas (3,2-3,6 cm vs. 4.4-5.3 cm, de diámetro), y las ramas de estilo lineares, subuladas no truncadas.
