Twitter " Facebook # Google+ $ Email LEO VAN VELZEN / LEOVANVELZEN.COM Gerry Teekens, founder and proprietor of Criss Cross Jazz, an unassuming Dutch indie label that became a vital repository of recorded jazz from the 1980s onward, died on Oct. 31. He was 83. His death was confirmed by his son, Jerry Teekens, Jr. At the news, tributes poured in from Criss Cross artists old and new, including soprano saxophonist Sam Newsome and guitarist David Gilmore. Formerly a professional drummer, Teekens founded Criss Cross in 1981 with a mission to document swinging, straight-ahead jazz of the highest caliber. At first the roster featured musicians as revered as guitarist Jimmy Raney and saxophonist Warne Marsh, but it grew to include the young and the promising: saxophonists Kenny Garrett, Chris Potter and Mark Turner, to name but a few, and pianists Orrin Evans, Bill Charlap and Benny Green.     Discography Updates (Updated May, 2021) I’ve been amassing corrections and additions since the August, 2012 publication of Pepper Adams’ Joy Road. Its 2013 paperback edition gave me a chance to overhaul the Index. For reasons I explain below, it’s vastly superior to the index in the hardcover version. But those are static changes, fixed in the manuscript. Discographers know that their databases are instantly obsolete upon publication. New commercial recordings continue to get released or reissued. Audience recordings are continually discovered. Errors are unmasked, and missing information slowly but surely gets supplanted by new data. That’s why discographies in book form are now a rarity. With the steady stream of updates that are needed to keep a discography current, the internet is the ideal medium. When Joy Road goes out of print, in fact, my entire book with updates will be posted right here. At that time, many of these changes will be combined with their corresponding entries.     Chico Freeman Heralded as one of the most important saxophonists of our time, composer and producer, Chico Freeman has perfected an immediately recognizable approach to music and composition, blending what he has experienced from his past and providing fluidity into a future of infinite musical possibilities. In the early 2000s, with dozens of recordings as a leader, Freeman moved from New York to Europe to start a new chapter of his life -- exploration by focusing on his own self-improvement and self-reflection. His thirst to immerse himself in his music, his curiosity to explore working with different musicians and living in different cultures and challenging himself to be better than he was. “As much as I’ve travelled and on the road playing with such masters as McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Jack DeJohnette, Sam Rivers, Sun Ra, Dizzy Gillespie and so many jazz greats, as well as leading my own groups including founding “The Leaders” and the group “Roots,” an inner voice was telling me, you need to go to another level both musically and personally,“ Freeman explains. “You need to work with other musicians from different cultures and create new avenues of expression. As part of the Freeman family legacy of Chicago; his father, legendary NEA Jazz Master saxophonist Von Freeman; his uncles, guitarist George Freeman; and drummer Bruz Freeman, Chico amassed a diverse résumé of performing R&B to blues, hard bop to avant-garde. His collegiate studies in Advanced Composition and Theory at Northwestern University led him to teach composition at the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) Music School, and while attaining his Masters in Composition and Theory at Governor State University, he studied composition with NEA Jazz Master Muhal Richard Abrams.

    Abstract A simple system for recognizing music is presented, based on various musical descriptors, num- bers that describe some aspect of the music. Various descriptors are discussed; in particular, a novel descriptor, the floor-1 cepstral coefficient (F1CC) measure, a refinement of MFCCs based on the Vorbis psychoacoustical model is presented and evaluated. Also, various forms of statistical dimensionality reduction, among them PCA and LDA, are considered in the present context. But most critical acclaim is heaped on the period before New York@Night 1964. Ascension, recorded in 1965, is considered by many the end of Coltrane as a 4 legitimate jazz musician, as he moved away from his roots into the burgeoning Interview: Fred Ho avant garde and free jazz scenes. But another group see Coltrane’s shift in this direction helping to propel these new forms, not least because of his championing 6 by Ken Waxman of such musicians as Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, John Tchicai and Marion Artist Feature: Enrico Pieranunzi Brown, now all legends in their own rights. This month two tributes (at Le Poisson Rouge and Jazz Standard) will recreate Coltrane’s controversial work with allstar by Laurel Gross 7 casts of musicians from across the modern spectrum, a living testament to the On The Cover: John Coltrane’s Ascension music’s continuing impact.
