Corky Hale said: “Holiday happiness is the underlying purpose my CD Album. I’ve incorporated upbeat and happy songs on my album in hopes of making people who listen to it feel relaxed and refreshed after hearing it. I made this recording, putting a jazz spin on traditional Christmas songs we all know and love, playing most of them on the harp, and a few of them on the piano.” Musician Corky Hale has been heralded by the media as the greatest Jazz harpist in the world. Regarding her musical abilities, the Los Angeles Times has written Corky Hale is “more than a triple threat!,” while the San Francisco Examiner has called her “a musical tornado and a performer of cyclonic proportions,” while Variety has raved: “Hale proves the harp can swing; her harp is a lush kaleidoscope of harmonies,” and Cabaret Scenes Magazine has written: “Here comes class and elegance, cloaked in silk. Hail to Hale!” The song track list include the perennial holidays favorites: “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town,” “Silver Bells,” “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “California Christmas,” “Dreidel Song,” “The Christmas Song” (“Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire”), “Jingle Bells,” “Winter Wonderland,” “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” “Silent Night” and “Auld Lang Syne.” The song, “California Christmas,” written by her husband, Mike Stoller of Leiber & Stoller fame, can only be heard exclusively on this CD album. About Corky Hale: Corky Hale (Harpist and Pianist) was born in a small mid-western farm town and started taking piano lessons at age three. At age seven, while vacationing with her family in Florida, Hale was heard in the lobby of her hotel picking out tunes on the piano by House bandleader, Horace Heidt. Heidt had a little band jacket made for her and featured her for the next few weeks in the evening show. She began studying piano at Chicago Conservatory at the age of seven, and harp at the age of eight. She has performed at The White House with Tony Bennett, soloed with Barbra Streisand in Central Park and at the Hollywood Bowl, and performed with Björk on her MTV Special in London. Hale has also appeared with George Michael at London’s Royal Albert Hall and Washington, D.C.’s RFK Stadium. She has played harp for Liberace (on his television show and at Madison Square Garden) and Judy Collins, piano for Billie Holiday, Mel Tormé and Peggy Lee, and sung with the bands of Harry James, Ray Anthony and Jerry Gray. She has also appeared in concert at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. To learn more, please visit www.corkyhale.com. # # #.

Obviously, these items would be a good gift idea for any occasion year-round, as well as a gift for yourself! We do not include many, if any at all, single CDs in the guide. Most everything contained will be multiple CD sets, DVDs, CD/DVD sets, books and the like. Of course, you can always look though our back issues to see what came out in 2017 (and prior years), but none of us would want to attempt to decide which CDs would be a fitting ad- dition to this guide. As with 2016, the year 2017 was a bit on the lean side as far as reviews go of box sets, books and DVDs - it appears tht the days of mass quantities of boxed sets are over - but we do have some to check out. These are in no particular order in terms of importance or release dates.

Claude Thornhill Arranger Profile Oldest Jazz Musician Cannonsburg, PA Recognizes Como, Vinton BIG BAND NEWSLETTER VOLUME 136 BIG BAND JUMP NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER, 2011 INTERVIEW - CORKY HALE The name Corky Hale isn’t as well known as, say, Harry James, Ray Anthony or Jerry Gray but she’s worked with all three and is the perfect person to give us an insight into the later years of the Big Band scene. She has performed with numerous top names in the music world, primarily as pianist and harpist as well as starring on her own as instrumentalist and singer. She’s been a theater producer, political activist and clothing store owner among other pursuits. Since 1970 she’s been married to Mike Stoller of the songwriting team of Leiber & Stoller. Our interest was her interaction with personalities with whom she’s worked, in effect giving us a series of personality profiles. She responded most generously with comments about Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday. Corky Hale was on her way to a three week tour of Italy when we checked in with her. We first mentioned her very early musical ability. She answered in no uncer BBJ: Were you accepted by the guys? tain terms. CH: (She refers to a documentary about women in music.) That was part of the documentary. BBJ: You were kind of a child prodigy. Those women said it was very hard to be accepted by CH: I wasn’t kind of! I started the piano at three and the guys who didn’t want to play with women, but I at seven I was accepted at the Chicago Conser never, ever had any problems.

The Harp in Jazz and American Pop Music Megan A. Bledsoe A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts University of Washington 2012 Reading Committee: Donna Shin, Chair Valerie Muzzolini Gordon Áine Heneghan Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Harp Performance Bledsoe - DMA Harp Performance ©Copyright 2012 Megan A. Bledsoe 2 Bledsoe - DMA Harp Performance University of Washington Abstract The Harp in Jazz and American Pop Music Megan A. Bledsoe Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Assistant Professor of Flute Donna Shin, Chair Instrumental Performance, School of Music The harp has endured a tenuous relationship with the genres of jazz and American popular music throughout history. While a few harpists have enjoyed successful and significant careers in these fields, the harp is largely absent from mainstream jazz and American pop. The purpose of this dissertation is to ascertain a definitive cause for such exclusion and use this information to identify a feasible path toward further integration of the harp in jazz and American pop music. This paper examines the state of the harp in jazz and American pop from various angles, including historical perspective, analytical assessment, and a study which compares harpists’ improvisational abilities to those of their mainstream jazz instrumentalist counterparts. These evaluations yield an encompassing view of the harp’s specific advantages and detriments in the areas of jazz and American pop. The result of this research points to a need for specialization among harpists, particularly in defining new styles. It is evident that harpists’ careers generally necessitate a working knowledge of various styles of music.
