An internationally recognized organic chemist and a Distinguished University Professor of Chemistry at NC State, Dr. Fox leaves a legacy of achievement and unparalleled growth for NC State. While serving as Chancellor, she has more than tripled the number of endowed chairs and professorships, attracting and retaining an outstanding, diverse faculty who-are increasingly honored with national and international awards for scholarly accomplishments. She increased tenfold the number of endowed and designated merit scholarships, thus improving GPA and SAT scores of incoming classes. In addition, the Campaign for NC State Students, completed in 1999, exceeded its goal of$80 million dollars and raised almost $130 million, tripling the numberofendowed scholarships and fellowships available to NC State students. Dr. Fox also bolstered NC State’s role as a national leader in research, overseeing an expansion in research expenditures from$379.8 million in 1998 to more than $478.6 million in 2004. Expenditures for National Science Foundation research rose from about $254 million in 1998 to more than $300 million in 2004. Under her guidance, NC State emerged as a national pacesetter in biotechnology, nanotechnology, genomics, bioinfonnatics, nonwoven textiles and other leading-edge technologies. Among other accomplishments ofher tenure, financial aid to students grew from $86 million in 1998-99 to more than $150 million for 2003-04; contributions increased from about $68 million in 1998 to more than $150 million in 2002; construction has begun on the $15 million Dorothy and Roy Park Alumni Center; the NCSU Libraries rose from 56th in 1998 to 32nd of 113 university research libraries in 2004; and NC State’s distance education programs, which offer more than 600 for-credit courses, grew by 99 percent over the past three years. Dr. Fox currently serves on the President's Council ofAdvisors on Science and Technology, on the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Science and Engineering Public Policy, as co-chair of the National Research Council's Govemment-University-lndustry Research Roundtable and asa member ofthe North Carolina Board ofScience and Technology. Before her appointment as Chancellor at NC State, Dr. Fox was the M. June and J. Virgil Waggoner Regents Chair in Chemistry and Vice President for Research at the University of Texas at Austin. Fox was born in Canton, Ohio, in 1947 and received her BS. from Notre Dame College and her Ph.D. from Dartmouth College, both in chemistry.
